Zendikar Planeswalker

~
You may have recalled last November when we first introduced to a mysterious Elf Planeswalker who we learned was Nissa Revane. In today's article, A Different Kind of Origin Story, Doug Beyer lifts the lid off the pot so we can smell what's cooking. We already know that Nissa will make an appearence in the new Duels of the Planeswalkers game what is news however that she is also expected in the upcoming Zendikar expansion due out in October, 2009.

Here is what Doug had to say today . . .

~
Introducing Nissa

This is Nissa Revane, a proud and ruthless nature-mage. She seeks to prove that her people, the elves, are the true heirs and best stewards of the planes of the Multiverse. She hails from a world known as Zendikar—and you'll see her card by October of this year.

If you want an early glimpse of Nissa's character in action, check out Duels of the Planeswalkers for XBOX and PC: Nissa is a combatant that you'll face as you play through the game. A word of warning: Nissa prefers action to words. She's a master summoner, and she knows the blades and arrows of her elf warriors speak louder than any rhetoric.

Note for the curious: Nissa's art, by Jaime Jones, was slightly altered for the purposes of Duels' packaging and marketing, because the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) rejected the original art for use on packaging. They felt her outfit was a bit too revealing. We felt it was in-bounds for fantasy art on a "T for Teen" product, but we're not the ESRB, and that's the way it goes sometimes. So we had Jaime Jones tweak the piece to meet those standards for Duels. Nissa's original art will remain wherever her card appears—on her card in the Duels game, in Magic Online, and of course in booster packs of Zendikar.

Let's speculate about the abilities briefly again - - Firstly - I'm thinking that there will be TWO positive (+) abilities and one negative (-) ability.

Mana Cost : 2GB
Loyalty 4
+1 : Put a 1/1 black and green elf warrior creature token into play.
+1 : Target creature gets +2/+2 and flying until end of turn.
-8 : Destroy four target permanents

Speaking of Duels of the Planeswalkers, here is something interesting that came in the mail tube to core and advanced organisers . . .

The second ability to give a creature reach seems totally off. Using a Planewalker's ability is a sorcery. So only usable in your own turn.

Giving reach to a creature to be able to block flyers would only be great to use in the opponent's turn. ;)

Nissa Revane looks menacing. Would you want to meet her in a dark alley?

Elves can be so revealing, can't they? With all those leafy clothing and such. :)

I don't foresee them making Nissa just like Elspeth.

You don't think she'll have an ability reminiscent of maelsrom pulse? :/

And you call That an elf planeswalker? Since when does destroying permanents and flying has anything to do with elves? Some people choose to be elven planeswalkers since they are the only race left who only let words and blades talk. This is an insult to other elven planeswalkers around our world, be it green-white elves, green-black elves or just green elves.

My idea :
1 colorless, 2 green mana
2 loyalty counters.

+2 : put two 1/1 green elf warrior into play.
+1 : Target elf gains all abilities of target elf in play or in the graveyard untill end of turn.
-7 : Draw cards equal to the number of elves in play, reveal your hand, you may play all elves in your hand in any order without paying their mana cost. If you do, those gain haste until end of turn.

Now THAT's an ELF planeswalker.

Nah you see shes gunna cost 4, probably 2GB. she may have a +2 ability, itll probably be something that represents green. her second ability will represent black, like discard or kill spell. her final will be something like overrun (thats my guess) but there are numerous great things Black Green elves can do, so its a toss up. ALTHOUGH there will be NO HASTE involved you crack head, thats a red ability and what caused me to write this.

PEACE

You dont now what is an Elf Planeswalker;
+1:Each creature get +1\-1 and haste until end of turn.
-2:Take control of target creature until end of turn.It gains haste.
-5:Put 5 4\4 Dragon\Elves cratures with Lifelink into play!
Man that is a damned good Elve Planeswalker.
And it has normal Elve abilities!!!

hmm elf pw eh?
this; 2bg
loyalty 2
+3 search your library for a land card and put it into play under target players control
-1 untap all creatures you control

-7 for the rest of the game you may pay any amount of life to add that amount of colorless mana to your mana pool
mmm.... juicy. this set-up i feel is workeable :) thx

No way, you guys have no idea what an Elf Planeswalker will be, come on now. Like this...

UUUGGG
5 Loyalty
+2: Target Elf gains indestructible and shroud until end of turn.
-3: Counter target non-Elf spell and draw two cards.
-8: Put a blue and green Elf Avatar token into play with flying, lifelink, and trample. Its power is equal to the number of cards in your hand. Its toughness is equal to the number of Elf cards you control.

I don't think it will be multicolored since there is so much in the shards block. i think nissa will be this:

1gg

4 Loyalty
+2 put three 1/1 green elf warrior creatures into play
-3 put 2 +1/+1 counters on each 1/1 creature you control.
-12 search your library for all forest cards and put them into play until end of turn they become 5/5 elf warrior creatures and have haste and trample. at end of turn shuffle all forest put into play this way into your library.

first of all its gonna be green black because those are the colors of her deck in the duel of the planeswalker deck nd if its not a 4 cost no point in using since being a 3 cost would make it ultimate impossible to use kinda lyk jace nd a 5 cost is too much for a planeswalker as for her abilities its gonna be lyk none of the other planeswalkers cause there would be no point in making her nd its prob gonna be +1or2 token ability sounds logical but theres already 2 planeswalkers that can do that next gonna be -1 cause they already messed up with elspeth by giving it 2 +1 abilities making rediculous or -2 copy of spell that already exists in magic, nd i have no opinion for the the ultimate cause its always something suprising that no one ever thinks of

Btw you can't counter at sorcery speed; there could be an acception for this but baring that you cannot do it.

I see it like this:

2BG
4 Loyalty

+1 Put a 1/1 Green Elf Druid token into play that has: "T: Add G to your mana pool."
-2 Target creature gets -2/-2 until end of turn.
-7 Target player discards their hand. Creatures you control get +1/+1 until end of turn for each card discarded this way.

Anonymous said...

Nissa Revane - G
1 Loyalty

+1: Add G to your mana pool.
-1: Add GG to your mana pool.
-8: Add GGG to your mana pool.

you guys, make me sick :S.
your abilities just don't make sense or are TOO strong for a card.

she will be like:
1GG (or maybe GB)
loyalty 3
+1: Put a 1/1 green elf warrior token into play.
-1: Search your library for a forest and put it into your hand.
-5: Whenever you play a creature spell this turn, draw a card.

now THAT IS an ELF planeswalker.

How About this one:
2GB- Nissa
3
-1: Untap up to 2 Basic Lands you control.
+2: Destroy Target Non-land permanent
-6: Return All creatures from your Graveyard to Play.

PS-I play vintage, and most of the abilities listed here are not too strong for a card...they are too strong for the current weak T2 slow format. BTW Wizards has destroyed the color pie anyway, but haste is not out of line for green (IE-concordant crossroads)

A black-green elf planeswalker is just what I've been waiting for. People who're saying these prospective abilities are "too strong" should remember that these are planeswalkers. They're meant to be THE MOST powerful entities (cards) in the world of Magic. Also, she's green, so I don't think she'll have any of those control/discard effects. I'd like to see some thing like this:

2 colorless 2 green 1 black
5 loyalty
+1: put 2 2/1 green elf warriors into play
-2: search your library for up to 4 basic lands and put them into play tapped
-8: untap all elves you control, you gain three life for each elf in play, all elves you control get +3/+3 and gain trample, fear, and double strike until end of turn

that would be a good Elf plainswalker I think. I do hope they stop making new plainswalkers for a while after this though. If there are too many of them, it'll defeat the purpose of their existence.

im gona give it my try

2BG
starting loalty 4

+1 put a 1/1 black green elf token into play

-2 target elf gets +3+3 and gains trample until end of turn, target non elf gets -3-3 and loses all abilitys until end of turn

-6 all elves you control get +1+1 for each elf on the battlefield and trample until end of turn

Anonymous said...

It would seem that something along the lines of
2BG
3 Loyalty counters

+1 Put a 1/1 green black elf token into play with deathtouch
-2 Return target card in your graveyard into play it becomes an elf zombie as well as its other creature types
-5 Your creatures get +3/+3 and deathtouch and trample until end of turn.

Unknown said...

ya some of those sound good, but i run elves in standard right now and turn three wins are awesome but when all the combo cards rotate out elfs are going to rely on draw i think so this is what she should be.

Nissa
3GB
3 loyalty
+1 Put two 2/2 black/green elf warrior tokens into play
-1 Search your library for 3 diffent elf creatures and put them into play
-5 Draw a card for each green creature you have in play if you draw more than 5 you may play one elf for free of the cards you draw

blahdocter said...

who ever said the new planes walker would have a final ability similar to overrun should seriously invest in garruk wildspeaker.

Anonymous said...

omg its got to be somthing like... its ultimate would be something that elves love...(like to draw a lot of cards)like regal force ability draw cards equal to the amount of green permenents u control. Its first will be like +2 put one or two elves in play. and like -2 to give a creature(or all ur creatures depending on how strong they want it) +2/+0 and another creautre -0/-3 until the end of turn... for like 1GB with 3 loyalty counters

Anonymous said...

This is what I think

2GB
3 Loyalty Counters
+2: put 2 1/1 Black Green Elves into play.
-X: Search your library for an Elf card with converted mana cost X and put it into play.
-6: Elves you control gain the ability "T: Add G to your mana pool," this effect doesn't end at the end phase.

Or something similar.

Anonymous said...

How about this.......
2 Loyalty
3GG

+3 Put 2 1/1 green Elf Warrior creature tokens into play.

-4 Put a +1/+1 counter on Target creature you contriol and each creature you ontrol with the same name.

-7 for each creature you control, pput 2 rokens into play that are copies of that creature or creature token.

Anonymous said...

Well this is simple

2BG

4

+1:Put a 1/1 elf into play

+1:Target creature gets -x/-x where x is the number of elves you control.

-7: Draw cards equal to the number of elves you control. Your opponent discards that many cards.

Anonymous said...

Nissa Revane 2GG
(4) Loyalty
(+1) Put a 1/1 green Elf Warrior creature token into play.
(+1) Elves you control get +1/+1 and gain trample until end of turn.
(-7) Search your library for up to 7 Elf creature cards, reveal them, and put them onto the battlefield under your control. Then shuffle your library.

Also, a number of things about this card ARE confirmed. Have fun guessing.

Anonymous said...

+5 Gain control of five target lands.

-1 Target player discards his or her hand and then searches library for all copies of nonland cards and removes them from the game.

-10 Put fifteen 5/5 green/black elf tokens into play with protection from everything, flying, haste, trample, first strike, double-strike, vigilance, shroud, lifelink.

Anonymous said...

I think some of the abilities are too weak or too powerful. The planeswalke should be more like this...

2GB

Loyalty: 4

+1: Put a 1/1 green/black elf creature token with (tap this creature: add 1 green or black mana to your mana pool).

-3: Search your deck for a black or green creature and put that creature into play tapped.

-8: All elf creatures you control gain +2/+2 and gain trample and deathtouch until end of turn. All non- elf creatures your oponent controls get -2/-2 and lose all abilites until end of turn.
