G'Day MTG folks.
Just a reminder to all, be sure to check out our Scars of Mirrodin Spoiler list which is constantly updated - linky is HERE.
Righto - The spoilers gods were kind again and showered internet land with a decent volume of Scars of Mirrodin spoilers last night. We will cut the witty banter short and get straight to them . . .
Trigon of Contagion,4
Artifact, Uncommon
Trigon of Contagion enters the battlefield with three charge counters on it.
: Put a charge counter on Trigon of Contagion.
2 : Remove a charge counter from Trigon of Contagion: Put a 1/1 green Insect creature token with infect onto the battlefield.
Yummy delicious pizza - at least that's what we think the dude is holding. This is a solid example of a crap rare (edit - Uncommon) that won't be invited onto the red carpet anytime soon. Having said that, we still do think it a decent sink for late game mana.
~
Leonin Arbiter, 1
Creature – Cat Cleric, Rare
Players can’t search libraries. Any player may pay {2} for that player to ignore this effect until end of turn.
2/2
Yep - this is a serious kick to the tenders for anyone hoping to play a lot of fetchlands after the release of the upcoming set.
~
Painsmith, 1
Creature – Human Artificer, Uncommon
Whenever you cast an artifact spell, you may have target creature get +2/+0 and gain deathtouch until end of turn.
2/1
You know those cute little Memnites or Ornithopters ? Yeah - they just got a whole lot more dangerous with Painsmith which can give one of them a nice pump and deathtouch. Expect shenannagins with this card as players develop synergies.
~
Galvanic Blast,
Instant, Common
Galvanic Blast deals 2 damage to target creature or player.
Metalcraft – Galvanic Blast deals 4 damage to target creature or player instead if you control three or more artifacts.
Dang. The 2 timmy to a criiter or player for just one red is decent, add in the new metalcraft abilitiy and this thing is the bee's knees and an auto-include in any Red-Deck-Win variant.
~
Engulfing Slagwurm, 5
Creature – Wurm, Rare
Whenever Engulfing Slagwurm blocks or becomes blocked by a creature, destroy that creature. You gain life equal to that creature’s toughness.
7/7
Nice. Fatty.
Quite a beatstick which oddly enough does not even want to deliver damage to a creature, it just wants to destroy it. With the local meta-game all weird on life-gain decks, we know some of those players will be paying attention to the potential of this card.
~
Molten-Tail Masticore, 4
Artifact Creature – Masticore, Mythic Rare
At the beginning of your upkeep, sacrifice Molten-Tail Masticore unless you discard a card.
{4}, Exile a creature card from your graveyard: Molten-Tail Masticore deals 4 damage to target creature or player.
{2}: Regenerate Molten-Tail Masticore.
4/4
Ummm. We dunno. We thought a bit about this and cannot quite fit it in with anything decent right now. We think there are a lot better cards out there for our casual constructed game. Perhaps the readership may want to enlighten us how this card is really good.
~
Myr Battlesphere, 7
Artifact Creature – Myr Construct, Rare
When Myr Battlefield enters the battlefield, put four 1/1 colorless Myr artifact creature tokens onto the battlefield.
Whenever Myr Battlefield attacks, you may tap X untapped Myr you control. If you do, Myr Battlesphere gets +X/+0 until end of turn and deals X damage to defending player.
4/7
Did they just say 'Battlesphere' ??
- that name is reason enough to play this card. For 7 colourless, you essentially get to power up the game table with a 8/7 (edit - reading is tech) across 5 creatures. We definitely want to see this played with Myr Galvanizer to pump those other myr. Alternatively, if one could slide a trample effect on this, it might be decent late-game bombtastic times.

Not to nitpick, but the Trigon of Contagion isn't a rare; it's Uncommon.
Trigon of Contagion is a neat card. True it's a bit overcosted/underpowered, but there are lots of ways to make it playable. It'd be GREAT in a deck with Doubling Season. (like that isn't obvious, but still).
Also, I predict a trend of modified art for this card: Ninja Turtles. You rightly pointed out the Pizza angle, but failed to note the hands holding the pizza are GREEN!!! COWABUNGA DUDES!
Umm the Battlesphere does have a trample like effect. But it's more a kick to the face. (It will still hit your opponent for 4 even if it's blocked, provided you tap your 4 new Myr for the pump.) Just imagine the damage potential will 4 of each of the Myrs. 24 to the face.
Again not to nitpick, but i don't think the Battlesphere would become a 8/11 would it - it would become a 8/7 as its +X/+0.
Ummm you said it would become an 8/11 but if you look closely it says it gets +X/+0 so it would be a 8/7 not an 8/11 and if you played it in an all Myr deck with the mana Myr you could also get it out sooner and have some more pumping for the Sphear
Now, I don't speak...whatever language Trigon of Contagion is in but I believe the insect has infect.
Myr galvanizer + Myr battlesphere
double the amount of bonus you get :D
