Gatecrash Spoiler 8

~
Happy Friday MTG peeps,

We'll be heading out to hit up OMG! Games here in Barrie, Ontario and try our luck against all those Unburial Rites players seem very eager to game with at this evening's Friday Night Magic event and hopefully score this month's FNM promo, Searing Spear.

Tonight, we also expect to hear quite a lot of chatter about all the new Gatecrash spoilers and previews we've seen over the last few days and how these may shape a new season of Magic: the Gathering come February.   Anywhoos, without further delay, let's get to today's new cards seen on the mothersite and around the 'net !

Crypt Ghast, 3b
Creature - Spirit, Rare
Extort (Whenever you cast a spell, you may pay {W/B}. If you do, each opponent loses 1 life and you gain that much life.)
Whenever you tap a Swamp for mana, you may add {B} to your mana pool.
2/2

Crypt Ghast is a solid hit.  Players will want this to ramp into a black spell or simply enable an easy method to pay for the Orzhov Extort mechanic.

Mystic Genesis, 2guu

Counter target spell. Put an X/X green Ooze creature token onto the battlefield, where X is that spell's converted mana cost.

Awesome art from Mike Bierek on this counterspell.  The mana cost of 5 is steep but you do get another body on the field for your troubles.  The big question here for you is to decide just how far will you want to go and still feel comfortable about the exchange here.  Personally, we've decided that we would not want to fire this off unless we are able to get at least a 3/3 out of the deal.  We expect this to be a big hit in Commander / EDH builds.

Instant, Uncommon
Destroy target creature. It can't be regenerated. Its controller puts a 3/3 green Frog Lizard token onto the battlefield

This preview comes to us from the French MTG site SMF Corp.  This is the new Pongify which nerfs a target critter and replaces it with a 3/3 Frizard (?).  Gotta love Simic crazy critter tech whose flavour also comes through the cool flavour text 'We merged your vital essences with those of several other creatures. No need to thank us. -Speaker Trifon'.  We will likely use this to downsize an opponent's fatty or, (more likely) we would use this on an udying creature we control such as Young Wolf perhaps while Experiment One is on the field for additional Evolve shenanigans.

Skyknight Legionnaire, 1rw
Creature - Human Soldier, Common
Flying, haste
2/2

This is a reprint from the original Ravnica: City of Guilds.  We are leaning towards the original card illustration from artist Jim Murray and think that the new art from Anthony Palumbo would have been great if just Wizards had asked for an image zoomed out to include the Roc this Knight is mounted on.  Altogether we think that this is a perfect addition for any Boros build.
