Battle for Zendikar Spoilers 9-14

~
Happy Monday MTG peeps,

Oh dear do we have a lot of catching up to do with Battle for Zendikar spoilers and previews.  We had been crazy busy since the middle of last week and over the weekend but are now through the worst of it.  We were able to take a break from work and get out to play at Friday Night Magic at our local store, OMG! Games, here in Barrie, Ontario which was completely enjoyable.  Apparently, the metagame was not expecting some of the lists (like Izzet Heroic) which at one time were popular but had fallen out of favour of late.  Anywhoos, we've got to get to the new Battle for Zendikar cards now -

Endless One, X
Creature - Eldrazi, Rare
Endless One enters the battlefield with X +1/+1 counters on it.
0/0

We love us some +1/+1 counters (and some of the shenanigans it brings) as well as an Eldrazi you can scale to where the game is going.  Great mana sink.
~
Void Winnower, 9
Creature - Eldrazi, Mythic Rare
Your opponent can't cast spells with even converted mana costs. (Zero is even.)
Your opponents can't block with creatures with even converted mana costs.
11/9

This is a weird and interesting Eldrazi mythic.  We suspect that if this is cast and sticks, this will we a nightmare for players (control players most definitely).
~
(Reprint) Felidar Sovereign, 4WW
Creature - Cat Beast
Vigilance, lifelink
At the beginning of your upkeep, if you have 40 or more life, you win the game.
4/6

We personally rather liked this card in the original Zendikar.  We are fans of alternate win condidtions, no matter how wonky or unrealistic.
~
(RUMOUR), Counterspell(?name?) 1UU
Instant
Counter target spell.
Awaken 3 — 4UU (If you cast this spell for 4UU, also put three +1/+1 counters on target land you control and it becomes a 0/0 Elemental creature with haste. It's still a land.)

This may be a stretch in standard given the awaken cost but would be happy to get this into one of our Commander builds.  A 'Cancel' instant spedd is still damn fine too.
~
Exert Influence, 4U
Sorcery, Rare
Converge — Gain control of target creature if its power is less than or equal to the number of colors of mana spent to cast Exert Influence.

We would rather have a more unconditional 'Mind Control' card over this one.
~Prism Array, 4U
Enchantment, Rare
Converge — Prism Array enters the battlfield with a prism counter on it for each color of mana spent to cast it.
Remove a prism counter from Prism Array: Tap target creature.
WUBRG: Scry 3.

This does not float our boat for standard and expect this to find its way into the dollar rare bin.
~
(RUMOUR) Drana (name?) 1BB
Legendary Creature - Vampire Ally
Flying, first strike
Whenever Drana (name?) deals combat damage to an opponent, put a +1/+1 counter on each attacking creature you control.
2/3

This looks pretty good.  Given the evasion of flying, there is a good chance you will be able to land damage and get those counters to those surviving creatures (tokens?) which swung.
~
Painful Truths, 2B
Sorcery, Rare

Converge - Draw X cards and loose X life, where X is the number of colors of mana spent to cast Painful Truths.

MagicBlog.de preview.  Why is this a rare?  We would rather have 'Read the Bones' which is a common.
~
Akoum Firebird, 2RR
Creature - Phoenix, Mythic Rare
Flying, haste
Akoum Firebird attacks each turn if able.
Landfall — Whenever a land enters the battlefield under your control, you may pay 4RR. If you do, return Akoum Firebird from your graveyard to the battlefield.
3/3

The landfall to get this bird out of your yard seems a bit steep.
~
Dragonmaster Outcast, R
Creature — Human Shaman, Mythic Rare
At the beginning of your upkeep, if you control six or more lands, put a 5/5 red Dragon creature token with flying onto the battlefield.

1/1

Another reprint.  This does not seem to fit into the Zendikar storyline very well.  This may be a nice pick in limited but cannot imagine this will be popular with gamers in standard.
~
From Beyond, 3G
Enchantment, Rare
Devoid (This card has no color.)
At the beginning of your upkeep, put a 1/1 colorless Eldrazi Scion creature token onto the battlefield. It has "Sacrifice this creature: Add 1 to your mana pool."
1G, Sacrifice From Beyond: Search your library for an Eldrazi card, reveal it, put it into your hand, then shuffle your library.

We suspect that this will see play in standard - never underestimate the power of being able to tutor an Eldrazi out of your deck.
~
Greenwarden of Murasa, 4GG
Creature - Elemental, Mythic Rare
When Greenwarden of Murasa enters the battlefield, you may return target card from your graveyard to your hand.
When Greenwarden of Murasa dies, you may exile it. If you do, you may return target card from your graveyard to your hand.
5/4

We love enters / exits  the battlefield effects.  We can see synergies with this as a sacrifice outlet as well.
~
Brutal Expulsion, 2UR
Instant
Devoid (This card has no color.)
Choose one or both —
• Return target spell or creature to its owner's hand.
• Brutal Expulsion deals 2 damage to target creature or planeswalker. If that permanent would be put into a graveyard this turn, exile it instead.

This is pretty cool - being able to bounce a spell while on the stack while being able to also bump 2 pain is decent.
~
Dust Stalker, 2BR
Creature - Eldrazi, rare
Devoid (This card has no color.)
Haste
At the beginning of each end step, if you control no other colorless creatures, return Dust Stalker to its owner's hand.
5/3

That is a pretty sweet hasty creature with a pseudo dash ability.  Don't expect this to stick on long to the board.  Suggested pairing with Titan's Presence.
~
March from the Tomb, 3WB
Sorcery, Rare
Return any number of target Ally creature cards with total converted mana cost 8 or less from your graveyard to the battlefield.

If there is an Ally decklist to be played, chances are, you will likely see this somewhere in the list.
~
Noyan Dar, Roil Shaper, 3WU
Legendary Creature - Merfolk Ally, Rare
Whenever you cast an instant or sorcery spell, you may put three +1/+1 counters on target land you control  If you do, that land becomes a 0/0 Elemental creature with haste that's still a land.

4/4

Love the design on this card.  Animating lands is nice, doing this for free when you cast an instant or sorcery is pretty much awesome-sauce.
~
Circle of Hedrons, 4
Artifact, Rare
When Circle of Hedrons enters the battlefield, exile all creatures with power 5 or greater until Circle of Hedrons leaves the battlefield.

Whether or not Eldrazi will be a big thing, we will definitely want a few of these in our stack to shut down fatties.  Love it!
~
Shambling Vent
Land, Rare
Shambling Vent enters the battlefield tapped.
T: Add W or B to your mana pool.
1WB: Shambling Vent becomes a 2/3 white and black elemental creature with lifelink until end of turn. It's still a land.

Man land pretty much as expected for white / black - good surprise chump block or option to push through late-game damage.
~
Ally Encampment
Land, Rare
t: Add 1 to your mana pool.
t: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool. Spend this mana only to cast an Ally spell.
1, t, Sacrifice Ally Encampment: Return an Ally you control to its owner's hand.

Channel Fireball preview.  If you are thinking of running a decklist with a number of Ally cards, then including this is a straightforward decision.  If you are running 5-colour Allies in Modern (you have our respect), then this is certainly a shoo-in.
~
Sanctum of Ugin
Land, Rare
T: Add 1 to your mana pool.
Whenever you cast a colorless spell with converted mana cost 7 or greater, you may sacrifice Sanctum of Ugin. If you do, search your library for a colorless creature card, reveal it, put it into your hand, then shuffle your library.

The Command Zone preview - and certainly Commander fans would be rather happy to get this into their fat stacks.  Again, any card allowing you to tutor out an answer or threat is good tech.

Khanar and Tarkir

~
Happy Thursday MTG peeps,

As it is Thursday, our local gaming store OMG! Games is running its usual Commander (EDH) group tonight.  Sure we have a few tall stacks on the go but want to tweak the decklists with the newest Magic: the Gathering cards from Born of the Gods still before we take it for a spin - so - we'll likely be staying in, get our n3rd on with a unsightly and disorganized pile of cards ready for next week as well as the regular Friday Night Magic event tomorrow.

Anywhoos - time for a pop quiz -
Take a looky-loo at the following images to piece together a similarity.

We've got (left to right / top to bottom) -
• Genghis Khan - warlord of the Mongol empire
• Khan Noonien Singh - Star Trek villain
• Chaka Kahn - singer / songwriter
• Kanar - Cardassian alcoholic beverage (DW9)

So whats this all about?  Possibly this fall's Magic: the Gathering expansion set.  Here's the latest trademark registrations from Wizards of the Coast -
On September 9, 2013, WoTC filed for a trademark for "Warlords of Khanar" in the following categories:

Given the specific category registrations here as well as previous experiences, there appears to be a (slim?) chance that we could be looking at the name of the fall expansion.  Both names 'feel' the same and for us, invoke a feeling of wild steppes and wind-swept arid plains sparsely populated by nomadic bands of warriors.  We would go so far as to suggest that Wizards could possibly revise Horsemanship and / or Banding should this block prove real.  Kinda makes us want to pick up some of those older singles from MTG Mint Card.

Theros Rumors

~
Happy Thursday MTG peeps,

Most Magic: the Gathering fans will be turning their attention to this weekend's events, all part of the PAX Prime event in Seattle.  Wizards of the Coast will be holding the  Theros Preview Party Saturday evening at the Showbox at the Market venue and then the Theros World Building Panel on Sunday.  Before we get too far ahead of ourselves, we should review a handful of interesting Theros spoilers / rumors surfacing within the last few days.  We again advise you to treat these as rumors only and only rely upon official previews on the mothersite.

First up - Thassa, confirmed to the blue-aligned god in the Planeswalker guide to Theros had its rumored text leaked onto the forum.  As the gamer community evaluated whether it was real or fake, Twitter user '@tropicalsteve' fired off a question to Matt Tabak, the WotC MTG rules guru.  What happened next was rather interesting, Matt provided rules clarification all but confirming the card's existance.  We sort of feel badly for good-guy Matt as he works on cards that won't see print for a year or two to come which just lends potential confusion as to what cards may be in the open and which ones have not been previewed yet.  The conversation was subsequently deleted which gives us more reason to believe the following (perhaps with minor re-wording) may be the real deal . . .

Thassa, God of the Sea, 2u
Legendary Enchantment Creature, God Mythic Rare
Indestructible
As long as your devotion to blue is less than five, Thassa isn’t a creature. (Each u in the mana costs of permanents you control adds to your devotion to blue.)
At the beginning of your upkeep, scry 1.
1u: Target creature you control can’t be blocked this turn.
5/5

CARD IMAGE IS MOCK-UP !
~
EDIT - afternoon update -

Somewhat similar situation to Matt's above had just occurred with MaRo himself when greekos576 asked him about Bident of Thassa on Tumblr . . .
Dang - the WotC folks need a break.

Next up - a series of interesting forum posts by member Trollcreature, all of which was largely ignored until the second installment of the Theros Planeswalker Guide.  A measured level of credibility is now granted and previous posts now carefully considered.  Again, only rumors here but here are some of the claims . . .

Futureshifted allied-color-lands cycle may get a reprint in Theros.  These are Rare lands that are able to add two colors of mana to their controller's mana pool — Graven Cairns, Grove of the Burnwillows, Horizon Canopy, Nimbus Maze, and River of Tears.

Also - the following is now up for serious consideration based upon Trollcreature's posts -

Medomai the Ageless, 4UW
Legendary Creature — Sphinx
Flying
Whenever Medomai the Ageless deals combat damage to a player, take an extra turn after this one.
Medomai the Ageless can't attack during extra turns*.
*This is the guessed text

Chained to the Rocks, W
Enchantment — Aura
Enchant _____ you control
When Chained to the Rocks enters the battlefield, exile target creature an opponent controls until Chained to the Rocks leaves the battlefield.
(That creature returns under its owner’s control.)

That's a wrap for now, check on back again as we head into the weekend.

Tumblr Time

Happy Friday MTG peeps,

Here in Barrie, Ontario (Canada-Land) we got walloped with over three feet of snow and it continues to snow which means we might not be able to get out to Friday Night Magic tonight (on the other end of the city).  Instead we plan to game with some new builds we are working with now that we have most the new Magic: the Gathering Gatecrash cards.

Anywhoos - before we get along to today's post, we want to yatter a bit about some Dagon's Maze (the next new set) rumours and news circulating around the web.  The first is official from the mothersite - the Dragon's Maze 'Buy-a-Box' promo is Render Silent.  We don't know what this rare may do but rest assured, it's a non-creature spell.  Next up - a rumour.  There is some unsubstantiated rumours that Dragon's Maze will have a mythic-rare land which provides an alternate-win condition.  Essentially similar to 'Thawing Glaciers', this will tap for a colourless mana, and allow you to pay three mana, tap and search your library for a Gate card and put it into play.  Having ten or more 'Gates' on your side of the gametable would win you the game.

Another recent piece of news comes from the U.S. trade / copyright office where a "Journey into Nyx" Trademark application was submitted by Wizards of the Coast.  This could easily be a Dungeon's and Dragon's product or perhaps the name of the next block - so speculate away.  Some MTG fans postulate that this could be a block with a setting on the Plane of Arkhos as suggested on the Future Sight card 'River of Tears' and the Planechase card 'Lethe Lake'.

Righto - let's get on to today's re-posts from our sister site MTG Realm on Tumblr !

M11 Game Day

~
Happy Wednesday to all,

We are somewhat bedazed to come to the realisation that the core set Magic 2011 has already been out for a month and we are now looking at M11 Game Day this weekend. If you are not previously engaged, we suggest you make tracks to your fav local gaming store and participate - human contact would be a good thing for you.

Anywhoos - here's the details you need to know . .

Game Day takes place at participating Wizards Play Network locations worldwide one month after the Magic 2011 release. Game Days are the first opportunity to play Standard format on a global scale with the cards from Magic 2011!

Where Can I Play? - Check out the handy locater from Wizards here.

Game Days are happening worldwide on August 14-15! Check out our tournament locator to find an event near you. Contact the organizer of the event for details on event start times and entry fees.
What Happens There?

Game Days are Standard format. The tournament will be Swiss-style, with the top 8 players after the Swiss rounds advancing to the single-elimination finals. In the case of an event with 16 players or less, only the top 4 will advance. Where necessary, the standings after the Swiss rounds will be used to determine final order in the standings. In the case of an event with exactly 8 players, there will be three Swiss rounds with no single-elimination cut.

What Do I Get? - All participants receive an exclusive Liliana's Specter promo card (while supplies last). The top 8 players each receive an exclusive full-art Mitotic Slime promo card. The cards are awarded to the Top 8 players even if the tournament cuts only to the top 4. Two Mitotic Slime promo cards will also be awarded as door prizes at each location.

The winner receives the Magic 2011 Game Day winners certificate, as well as the Magic 2011 Champion title. Selected top 8 decks and all Game Day winners will also be featured on magicthegathering.com.

Anywhoos - We have heard that Leonin Abunas is getting reprinted for Scars of Mirrodin and will feature some sweet new art from that amazing artist Todd Lockwood. This is is piece in question here . . .

EDIT : The art has been confirmed as Leonin Elder.

Rise of the Eldrazi Ultra-Pro

~
Good Day peeps,

We were just over at MTG Mint Card and lo and behold, we had stumbled across some very lovely Magic the Gathering Ultra-Pro products featuring wicked art from the upcoming Rise of the Eldrazi set.

By the time we hit the forums, it appears that everyone and their Mindless Null already were in the know . . . saaad Panda.

Anywhoos - if you don't already know, UltraPro is pretty much the MTG standard for Albums & Portfolios, Card Storage, Card Sleeves and the like. If you walk into an FNM and do not see oodles of UltraPro products on the tables, chances are that you walked into the hair salon next door by mistake.

We always look forward to the new UltraPro products during spoiler season as this provides an opportunity to see brand new artwork not yet previewed elsewhere. Let's have a look what's in the spoiler bag today for Rise of the Eldrazi !

Portfolios - for showing off yer cardboard sweetness.

Featuring art from 'Memnor' and a new unknown smiling demon dude.

Sideloading Deck Boxes

Nice deck storage box featuring that red land we looked at in yesterday's post as well a dude riding a flame-breathing dragon - can't get much more epic than that (except Bear Calvary perhaps).

Toploading Deck Box

Featuring art from 'Memnor' as well as Nissa Revane / Sorin Markov. We personally give two claws up for the divider as our sideboard somehow attempts to migrate into our main deck with disastrous consequences at FNM.

Card Sleeves

Featuring art 'Vol, Slave of Bolas' - as speculated by many - Sarkhan Vol now appears to be doing laundry for Nicol Bolas (? nasty job we think ) - Some are speculating that this will be a red / green Mythic Rare in the upcoming set.

And finally . ..

S'more Card Sleeves

That dude riding the irritated Dragon again.

We get a weird feeling that we've seen this guy before - perhaps he is that very eloquent and sharply-dressed post-apocalyptic fella, Lord Humungus from Mad Max, Road Warrior (?)

Anywhoos - we are now looking rather forward to the release of Rise of the Eldrazi and spoiler season appears to be starting earlier than we expected - ya !.

Rise of the Eldrazi Art Spoilers

~
Good Day MTG fiends,

If you had not yet seen the epic new Rise of the Eldrazi arts spoiled in the form of very cool playmats by our buddy Trick over at ManaNation, we will be posting these here.

First off, something we forgot to mention in yesterday's first real Rise of the Eldrazi card spoiler . . . (Kozilek, Butcher of Truth)

We are loving the idea that perhaps card art may not be restricted to just the current box but be drawn down into the background of the text box. This is typically reserved for Planeswalker cards currently - perhaps Mythic Rares will now share this artistic tweak (?).

~

Anywhoos - back on topic - epic land arts from Rise of the Eldrazi first spoiled by ManaNation . . .

And finally, a playmat with the existing Eye of Ugin art work (from Worldwake) . . .
~
And we think we have one last piece of news for you - rather a rumour . . .

Our buddy JM García (aka jmgh) over at Magic Madrid had posted a rather juicy rumour - - A 'reliable' source had informed him that Rise of the Eldrazi will consist entirely of colourless cards (colourless non-artifact creatures a la Kozilek, Butcher of Truth or Hydbrid cards.

We invite your comments to express your extreme joy or hatred of just such an thing . . . remember now - this is just still a rumour.
