Guilds of Ravnica Spoiler 12-16

~
Happy Monday MTG peeps,

Yesterday there was a post with several Magic: the Gathering spoilers.  These Ravnica Allegiance leaks appears to be from the same WPN store which had previously posted Guilds of Ravnica spoilers, from their promo card mail out.

It has now been out for a day, so we may as well talk about it.  Looks like the XXYY cycle is continuing, some fun alternate wind condition, a favourite reprint and possibly a rather nice inclusion in competitive standard.  Have a look -

Guilds of Ravnica Spoiler 8-28

~
Happy Tuesday MTG peeps,

Although official Magic: the Gathering previews are still some time away for the next set, Guilds of Ravnica, there was an unintended release of the Buy-A-Box promo earlier today on the Wizards of the Coast website.  It appears that portions of the German language Guilds of Ravnica product splash page was accidentally promoted and incorporated into the existing Dominaria product page.

Magic: the Gathering fans were treated to booster pack images (showing Vraska, Ral Zarek, and some other unidentified character).  Also revealed was a big splashy creature intended for the Guilds of Ravnica Buy-A-Box Promo card :

Impervious Greatwurm - 7GGG

Creature - Wurm, Mythic Rare

Convoke  (Your creatures can help cast this spell. Each creature you tap while casting this spell pays for 1 /colourless/ or one mana of that creature's color.)

Indestructible

16/16

The ultimate answer to intrigue and subtlety.
Selesyna watermark

While some MTG gaming fans may be convinced that the Convoke mechanic found on this buy-a-box promo may be returning with Guilds of Ravnica, this is certainly not a guarantee at this point until official previews start revealing other cards.

Commander 2018 Spoilers

~
Happy Monday MTG peeps,

Perhaps not so happy as we were doing so well and then, approximately six hours ago, approximately noon (Monday, July 23,  2018), Moscow time, all four Commander 2018 decks were spoiled on the Russian online social media and social networking service 'VK' (or 'CKontakte').

Commander 2018 is scheduled to be available for sale on August 10, 2018, and although official Magic: the Gathering previews from Wizards of the Coast are currently taking place, the kitten is out of the clutch now.  As hundreds (thousands?) of MTG fans already seen these, we are posting as well.  Before we get further, if you are new to this awesome Magic: the Gathering format, here is an informative blurb -

Commander is a unique and exciting way to play multiplayer Magic, featuring lots of legendary creatures and big, game-changing spells. Your deck is built around a single legendary creature (the "commander," which can be cast multiple times), and can use only cards within that creature's color identity. A Commander deck must be exactly 100 cards, and can't contain more than one copy of any card other than basic lands, making it a fun challenge for a creative deck builder. Play in a multiplayer free-for-all and maximize your commander's strengths to make sure you're the last one standing!

Commander (2018 Edition) brings back a very special category of commanders: planeswalkers! Yep, instead of a creature, each deck is led by a powerful planeswalker and built to take full advantage of their unique abilities. Most planeswalkers can't be used as commanders, but these four have been designed specifically to fill that role, so you can battle with a true legend of the Multiverse by your side.

~

Here are the four Commander 2018 decklist names and the new Commanders ::

Exquisite Invention - Artifacts theme
• Saheeli, the Gifted ( Blue / Red ), illustrated by Ryan Pancoast

Nature's Vengeance - Lands matter theme
• Lord Windgrace ( Black / Red / Green ), illustrated by Bram Sels

Adaptive Enchantment - Enchantments theme
• Estrid, the Masked ( Green / White / Blue ), illustrated by Johaness Voss

Subjective Reality - Top Deck theme
• Aminatou, the Fateshifter ( White / Blue / Black ), illustrated by Seb McKinnon

M19 Leak

~
Happy Monday MTG peeps,

Something rather odd had happened on or about Saturday May 5 (yes,  Cinco de Mayo) - Magic: the Gathering fan, @MoxMoonstone had cracked several Dominaria booster packs and pulled some nice cards.  These cards however, were not from the Dominaria set, but from Core 2019 ('M19'), which is not expected to be released until July the 13th.  Quite specifically, 18 commons were pulled from his packs.

This is not the first incident where there has been mismatched contents.  Some were quite decidedly created to whet the gaming community's appetite for an upcoming set, while other times, did indeed appear to be a packaging error.  In this case, it does feel like an issue at the printing and packaging facility.  There are a number of new rather decent looking cards along with some solid reprints.

Here are the pulls now -

• Act of Treason
• Anticipate
• Cancel
Daybreak Chaplain
• Disperse
Dwarven Priest
Dwindle
Goblin Instigator
Hostile Minotaur
• Inspired Charge
Knight's Pledge
Loxodon Line Breaker
• Mighty Leap
• Omenspeaker
Onakke Ogre
Scholar of Stars
• Sure Strike
• Tormenting Voice

Dominaria Promos

~
Happy Wednesday (again) peeps,

This is our second post for today, and likely not our last.  We do expect Wizards of the Coast to post the first of several Official Magic Story installments, penned by Martha Wells in under an hour from the time of this post.

For now we have to post about the upcoming Dominaria set - specifically the promo cards associated with it.  We have yet another spoiler and it is getting kind of tiresome.  As everyone is now talking about it, we might as well get to it.  It appears that a Spanish gaming store may have posted eight Dominaria promo cards.  Please note that these are unofficial and some things may be lost in translation to English -

• Shanna, Sisay's Legacy, FNM Promo, illus. Magali Villeneuve
"I'm the heir of many treasures, but none as prized as the knowledge of how my ancestor lived."

• Firesong and Sunspeaker, Buy-a-Box Promo, Illus. Zoltan Boros
Hurloon's summits are never silent.

• Champion of Steel Leaf (?), Store Championship Promo, illus. Simon Dominic

• Llanowar Elves, Open House Promo, illus. Vitor Adame Minguez

• Opt, FNM Promo, illus. Tyler Jacobson
The crystal pulsated with the power of Teferi's planeswalker spark. Was what Jhoira had given them a blessing or a curse?

• Zhalfirin Void, League Promo, illus. John Avon
"The wind whispers 'Come back home', but I can't."  - Teferi

• Fade into Oblivion, PNM Promo, Illus. Bastien L. Deharme
"Your life is over, your name lost and your deeds forgotten. It is as if Mazeura had never existed." - Chainer's Torment

• Zahid, Djinn of the Lamp, Draft Weekend Promo, illus. Tyler Jacobson

"I do as I wish, insignificant mortal. However, do tell me of your wishes; I find them exceedingly entertaining."

Dominaria Leak - Release Notes

~
Happy Friday MTG Peeps,

Perhaps the biggest Magic: the Gathering news so far this year - the unfortunate / accidental leak of the Release Notes for Dominaria.  Here's what you may need to know -

Yesterday evening, Thursday 8th March, an anonymous user, logged in as 'guest' posted the full Dominaria Release Notes in Chinese to Pastebin.  This website is popular with software programmers (posting code), students, and anyone else who may wish to post simple text to retrieve at a later time.  In fact, this website is popular with some Magic: the Gathering players who post decklists for easy access later.  In this case, the community picked up on this and went to work translating.  There is also a possibility that this document was originally posted to the Hong Kong based Gamelives Magic: the Gathering community forum.

In an unprecedented move a short time later, Wizards of the Coast staffer Blake Rasmussen had posted an article about this leak and provided the official release notes.  This article is linked right here and contains a number of items of interest beyond that of the Dominaria Release Notes.

For the moment, here is a brief summary of the forward -

The Dominaria set contains 269 cards (20 basic land, 101 common, 80 uncommon, 53 rare, and 15 mythic rare) that appear in booster packs, plus 10 cards available only in Dominaria Planeswalker Decks and 1 unique promotional card (available as part of the Dominaria in-store Buy-a-Box promotion).

The Dominaria set becomes legal for sanctioned Constructed play on its official release date: Friday, April 27, 2018. At that time, the following card sets will be permitted in the Standard format: Kaladesh, Aether Revolt, Amonkhet, Hour of Devastation, Ixalan, Rivals of Ixalan, and Dominaria. Cards from Welcome Decks (and other ancillary products) with the W17 set identification code are also permitted in the Standard format.

Dominaria Story Spotlight Cards
There are many important moments in the Dominaria story, but some of the most crucial—called "story spotlights"—are shown on cards. You can read more about these events in the official Magic fiction at MTGStory.com.
Story Spotlight 1: Broken Bond
Story Spotlight 2: Final Parting
Story Spotlight 3: Settle the Score
Story Spotlight 4: In Bolas's Clutches
The story spotlight cards in this set feature a Planeswalker symbol icon in their text boxes. The icon has no effect on gameplay. The printed cards also include the mtgstory.com URL and a number indicating the sequence of the cards in the story.

New Mechanic: Saga Cards
The Dominaria set introduces a new kind of enchantment: Sagas. Each Saga tells the story of a key event from the past as it unfolds during each of your turns.

Major Theme: Legendary Permanents
Legendary characters new and old have risen to prominence across the plane. In every Dominaria booster pack, you'll find at least one legendary creature. Beyond just creatures, the set also features a significant number of other legendary cards.

New Mechanic: Legendary Sorceries
Dominaria debuts legendary sorcery cards that capture extraordinary moments from our characters' pasts. These powerful spells can be unleashed only with the assistance of a legendary creature or planeswalker on your side of the battlefield.

New Term: Historic
If you look at this set's Saga cards, legendary cards, and artifact cards, you'll see a broad swath of Dominaria's extensive and mysterious history. Some cards celebrate the plane's storied past by rewarding you for playing these historic cards. Historic is a game term that refers to a card that has the legendary supertype, the artifact card type, or the Saga enchantment type.

Returning Keyword: Kicker
Kicker is a returning keyword that lets you pay a little more to give your spells some "oomph."

Rules Change: Damage Can't Be Redirected to Planeswalkers
Previously, you could redirect noncombat damage that a source you control would deal to an opponent, having that source instead deal that damage to one of their planeswalkers. With the release of the Dominaria set, this rule is being removed from the game. A large number of cards that dealt a certain amount of damage to "target player" are receiving errata.

Cycle: "Check Lands"
The Dominaria set features a cycle of enemy-color dual lands to help you make sure you always have the mana that you need. These cards were first printed in the Innistrad set, and their allied counterparts were recently printed in the Ixalan set.

Rivals of Ixalan Spoilers 11/20

~
Happy Monday MTG peeps,

Something rather odd happened early this morning with the Wizards of the Coast's Brazil community Twitter.  They had posted, very likely by mistake we think, two Rivals of Ixalan cards, which releases January 19, 2018.  The post went up around 6:00 AM this morning (local EST) and was subsequently removed at around 10:00 AM.  Do not fret, we did take a screen-capture of it.

https://twitter.com/Wizards_MagicBR/status/932609237322215426

First card - the Immortal Sun, what every faction and tribe on Ixalan seems to be after at the moment.

The Immortal Sun, 6
Legendary Artifact, Mythic Rare
Players can’t activate loyalty abilities of planeswalkers.
At the beginning of your draw step, draw an additional card.
Spells you cast cost 1 (colourless) less to cast.
Creatures you control get +1/+1.

The card's flavour ties in very nicely to the artifact's ability to prevent poor Mr. Angrath from returning to his home Plane to celebrate his daughter's birthdays.  The card illustration from artist Kieran Yanner is lovely and is very close to the design of Ixalan's Binding (art from Chase Stone), which is though to act like one-way valve on the Plane of Ixalan where Planeswalkers can visit or 'check in', but never leave.  If there were ever an Infinity Stone in Magic: the Gathering, we suspect it would like like this.  Hopefully Jace, Vraska, Angrath and other Planeswalkers are able to neutralise this relic and escape.  If not, they will settle for the warm smell of colitas at Hotel California forever.

~

Tetzimoc, Death Incarnate, 4BB
Legendary Creature - Dinosaur Avatar, Rare
Deathtouch
B, Reveal Tetzimoc from your hand: Put a prey counter on target creature. Only activate this ability during your turn.
When Tetzimoc enters the battlefield destroy each creature with a prey counter on it.
6/6

Artist Zack Stella created a wonderful piece here.  Tetzimoc "Spike', Death Incarnate is able to start handing out 'prey counters' while building the mana to cast it.  This reminds me of the 'Black Spot' in  Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island - we almost think that this may have been a Pirate (Brazen Coalition) card early in development.
~

Catching up with one transform card earlier is Storm the Vault // Vault of Catlacan.  The card art from Victor Adame Minguez shows what appears to be Pirates taking down an elemental guardian and hitting pay-dirt in the form of a vault full of treature.  Speaking of the Treasure Tokens the vault may generate, we need to re-visit Aether Revolt's 'alternate win condition' in Mechanized Production, and see if we can create the right condition for a win condition.

Storm the Vault, 2UR
Legendary Enchantment, Rare
Whenever one or more creatures you control deal combat damage to a player, create a colorless Treasure artifact token with "T, Sacrifice this artifact: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool."
At the beginning of your end step, if you control five or more artifacts, transform Storm the Vault.
/
/
Vault of Catlacan
Legendary Land
(Transforms from Storm the Vault.)
T: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool.
T: Add U to your mana pool for each artifact you control.

Swimming in coins proved harder than they'd hoped, but dancing was a jingling delight.

Big Ixalan Leak 6-15

~
Happy Thursday (again) MTG peeps,

EDIT - Full sheet of Ixan foil cards spoiled, which is kinda sad.  A sporadic few unofficial spoilers are fun and whet the appetite of the Magic: the Gathering community, but the full sheet is not cool. :(
Go to Reddit MTG TCG post linked over here if you want to see it.

We had already posted to the MTG Realm today (here is the earlier post on a number of Hour of Devastation art pieces).  In this post we have to talk about the MASSIVE Ixalan leak that occurred today.

The leak is in the form of what appears to be 2 images of uncut Magic: the Gathering card sheets which suggest to us that these to photos may have been taken at a printing contractor that Wizards of the Coast use.

The images were posted to the Reddit MTG / TCG subreddit thread by two different user names - Enterowlett and Hrafi.  At this point in time, there is no reason to doubt that the cards featured in the images may be illegitimate / fake.  As always, we are urging readers to only rely upon official previews at the Wizards of the Coast site.

Images are not the best but this is the best that we can make out -

EDIT - MORE MTG HOU ADDED BELOW

Happy Wednesday MTG peeps,

We have for you today, several Hour of Devastation spoilers, specifically Magic: the Gathering promo cards for the upcoming set.  These had been released into the wild internets yesterday by Three Kingdoms Games, located not very far from us in Markham, Ontario.  We are certain that the kit they received very early from Wizards from Wizards of the Coast will be the subject of a telephone call / email they will receive today from Wizards.

Anywhoos, since (almost) everyone is now talking about them, we shall too.  Posted to the Three Kingdoms Games are the following Hour of Devastation promo cards one could expect during the upcoming events.

Game Day Promos

• Abrade deals 3 damage to target creature.
• Destroy target artifact.

Adorned Pouncer,1W
Creature - Cat, Rare
Double strike
Eternalize 3WW (no reminder text)
1/1

002/199, illustrated by Kev Walker

Some brief notes -

• Ramunap Excavator - yeah! Reanimator decklists may be enjoying a proper resurgence again.  Perhaps there is room for a Black / Green Zombie build.

• Wildfire Eternal - That is a pretty full type line there.  Afflict looks to be a new mechanic and the Zombie / Jackal / Cleric provides a compelling reason to always block this thing when it goes into the red zone.

• Abrade - love this uncommon - great mana cost with two decent options.  This may be the new go-to spell against creature-heavy lists.

• Adorned Pouncer - Kitteh Tribal !  No idea that Eternalize may be fut for five mana, we are expecting something spicey.
