Zendikar Fake Spoilers

~
If one wished to garner the communal hatred of the Magic The Gathering community, just post fake spoilers. We at MTG Realm however enjoy seeing the fakes.

Firstly, most often, these fabrications do take a degree of imagination as well as a fair measure of time to produce and we should rather applaud the efforts of those mischievous rapscallions. Secondly, these obfuscations provide entertainment. In the way only a puzzle can present, are we challenged to use our cognitive or perceptual powers of the mind to answer the question, 'is this spoiler really a piece of postiche?'.

Here we present an image gathered from a Magic the Gathering fan site based in southeastern Europe (that should tell you something right there). Go to work and put on a deerstalker hat, grab your calabash pipe and become Sherlock Holmes for a few moments . . .

FtV: Exiled Prices

~
Hey all,

Just a quick follow-up to yesterday's post about the 'From the Vault: Exiled' card list . More specifically, I wish to yatter about the prices that one would expect to pay for this Magic: The Gathering special edition box set.

First off, let's take you back a year ago when Wizards of the Coast released the popular 'From the Vaults: Dragons' box set. This set had a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MRSP) of approximately $35 (U.S.) but did see quite a variance in price depending where you were looking. On-line retailers, traditional 'brick and mortar' retailers, and eBay sellers were selling the box set for just above the suggested priced to almost double the price.

(yep - those are Zendikar Booster pack wrappers above the FtV:E box)

Fast forward to the present . . . Wizards has the same suggested price of $35. Retailers of all varieties however have quite a different idea as to the price said product will be offered for. I looked just today and noted that there are several eBay retailers now selling the 'From the Vault: Exiled' box for $160 (U.S.).

In their defense however, I have this to offer. There seems to be an odd 'the sum of the parts are greater than the whole' kind of thing going on. Looking at the previous 'From the Vaults: Dragons' set, one could theoretically break the box down and sell the singles for almost $100. Similarly, with the new 'Exiled' set, I should think one would be able to sell off singles from the box to not only make your money back on the purchase price but also enough to afford a nice bottle of exported wine to go with your deluxe pizza.

Just look at the singles price for Beserk (unlimited edition) - this puppy is going for around $90 alone - just imagine what the others would be going for.

Big dollar value !

Anyway - not sure this is a rant or not - I would just like to have products such as these within reach of the casual player and not limited to the hard-core collector.

FtV : Exiled Card List

~
Cartas tão poderosas que foram banidas...

The original announcement was way back in March and the wait is finally over ! Today, Tom LaPille provided some updates on the much anticipated Magic the Gathering release 'From the Vault: Exiled' set.

From the Vault: Exiled contains fifteen cards that have been banned or restricted at some point. You might guess that many of these cards have not been printed in quite a long time or that some of them would be very powerful, and you'd be right. However, that wasn't good enough for us, so eight of them have never-before-seen art. I'll show you some of that art today. From the Vault sets are printed in the current card frame using a special foiling process that is unique to the series. Eight of the cards have never before been printed in the current card frame, and seven of those have never previously been printed in foil.

Here are the fabled foily 15 cards we can expect in the Exiled set . . .

Balance
Sorcery, 1W (2)
Each player chooses a number of lands he or she controls equal to the number of lands controlled by the player who controls the fewest, then sacrifices the rest. Players discard cards and sacrifice creatures the same way.

Berserk
Instant, G (1)
Cast Berserk only before the combat damage step.
Target creature gains trample and gets +X/+0 until end of turn, where X is its power. At the beginning of the next end step, destroy that creature if it attacked this turn.

Channel
Sorcery, GG (2)
Until end of turn, any time you could activate a mana
ability, you may pay 1 life. If you do, add {1} to your mana pool.

Gifts Ungiven
Instant, 3U (4)
Search your library for four cards with different names and reveal them. Target opponent chooses two of those cards. Put the chosen cards into your graveyard and the rest into your hand. Then shuffle your library.

Goblin Lackey
Creature - Goblin 1/1, R (1)
Whenever Goblin Lackey deals damage to a player, you may put a Goblin permanent card from your hand onto the battlefield.

Kird Ape
Creature - Ape 1/1, R (1)
Kird Ape gets +1/+2 as long as you control a Forest.

Lotus Petal
Artifact, 0 (0)
{T}, Sacrifice Lotus Petal: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool.

Mystical Tutor
Instant, U (1)
Search your library for an instant or sorcery card and reveal that card. Shuffle your library, then put the card on top of it.

Necropotence
Enchantment, BBB (3)
Skip your draw step.
Whenever you discard a card, exile that card from your graveyard.
Pay 1 life: Exile the top card of your library face down. Put that card into your hand at the beginning of your next end step

Sensei's Divining Top
Artifact, 1 (1)
{1}: Look at the top three cards of your library, then put them back in any order.
{T}: Draw a card, then put Sensei's Divining Top on top of its owner's library.

Serendib Efreet
Creature - Efreet 3/4, 2U (3)
Flying
At the beginning of your upkeep, Serendib Efreet deals 1 damage to you.

Skullclamp
Artifact - Equipment, 1 (1)
Equipped creature gets +1/-1.
When equipped creature is put into a graveyard, draw two cards.
Equip {1} ({1}: Attach to target creature you control. Equip only as a sorcery. This card enters the battlefield unattached and stays on the battlefield if the creature leaves.)

Strip Mine
Land
{T}: Add {1} to your mana pool.
{T}, Sacrifice Strip Mine: Destroy target land.

Tinker
Sorcery, 2U (3)
As an additional cost to cast Tinker, sacrifice an artifact.
Search your library for an artifact card and put that card onto the battlefield. Then shuffle your library.

Trinisphere
Artifact, 3 (3)
As long as Trinisphere is untapped, each spell that would cost less than three mana to cast costs three mana to cast. (Additional mana in the cost may be paid with any color of mana or colorless mana. For example, a spell that would cost {1}{B} to cast costs {2}{B} to cast instead.)

From the Vault : Exiled

~
Hey there folks,
Just catching up right now with the latest 'n' greatest news from the world of MTG - I had played Daddy-Daycare for the past few days as my 3 critters were at home (and NOT at school).

Let's yatter about the recent From the Vault announcement . . .

It is said there were once fifteen Magic: The Gathering cards so potent, they were banned or restricted from the known realms of competition. But in the years that have passed, the game has evolved and these elder cards are once again in play. Master these weapons from ages past and give your opponent a beating of historic proportions.

Contents
* 15 Premium foil cards, including 8 with new art
* An exclusive spindown life counter
* A collector’s guide
* Each card has been printed using a foil process unique to the “From the Vault” series.
* The 15 cards are all printed in the current card frame – for several, it is for the first time.
* 8 cards have new artwork commissioned from artists including Rebecca Guay, John Avon, and Randy Gallegos.
* From the Vault: Exiled will be available world-wide in English only, and will have an extremely limited print run.
* All cards are black-bordered and tournament legal. This means that these cards are legal for use in any tournaments where the original printings are still legal.

This product expected to be available August 28 2009, for the suggested retail price $ 34.99 (US dollars)

** A note about the Reserved List - Reserved cards will never be printed again in a functionally identical form. A card is considered functionally identical to another card if it has the same card type, subtypes, abilities, mana cost, power, and toughness. No cards will be added to the reserved list in the future.)
