MTG - Puzzle and Dragons

Happy Tuesday MTG peeps,

Puzzle & Dragons ( パズル&ドラゴンズ  ) is a puzzle video game with role-playing and strategy elements, developed by GungHo Online Entertainment for the iOS, Android, and Kindle Fire platforms.  This game is popular in Japan and is now making headway here in North America.  The game involves players moving / matching colored orgs in a grid which 'casts' a monster to do battle.  The popularity is that designers had developed numerous themes.  

Why are we talking about Puzzle & Dragons here on MTG Realm ? Glad you asked.  the publisher Gunhho had revealed a coming soon collaboration with Wizards of the Coast.  From the website, it appears that this game will feature evil Planeswalker Nicol Bolas, Chandra Nalaar, and the Weatherlight vehicle, all in a possible anime iterations of these characters.

Tonight at midnight, the newest Magic: the Gathering set, Eldrtich Moon finally goes on sale.  Although some large 'big box' store chains may have ignored the 'street date' by a day or two, a large number of local gaming stores are open late after midnight to run booster drafts or just sell new product.  We'll be popping by our local gaming store, OMG! Games here in Barrie, Ontario to pick up our customary Fat Pack and perhaps a few singles and hopefully scrap together a list for tomorrow's Eldritch Moon Launch for Friday Night Magic.  Participating stores with have that lovely Identity Thief launch promo for gamers.

First up - 
Eldritch Moon / is available now on Xbox One, iOS, and PC via Steam in a new update.  Magic Duels gamers can now play through the conclusion of the Innistrad story in a new campaign, and collect over 120 new cards for your favorite decks. Take on the darkness with eldritch abominations, shambling zombies, and the return of the Gatewatch

Second / finally,
We missed a post to MTG Realm yesterday.  Wednesdays we usually talk about that day's Magic short story posted to the mothersite.  The story, titled 'Battle of Thraben', penned by Nik Davidson, sets the stage for the final showdown between the 'Gatewatch' Planeswalkers and was pretty damn awesome.

MTG Puzzle Quest

With Pax Prime (Seattle) coming up this very weekend, Magic: the Gathering fans are chomping at the bit to get their fill of all wondrous things, but first and foremost, sneak peaks at the upcoming MTG sets - namely Battle for Zendikar, with a chance of Commander 2015.

But hold on - beyond the numerous Wizards of the Coast Panels and opportunities to play Magic, there is another exciting thing to look forward to - to be one of the first to play Magic: The Gathering - Puzzle Quest.  If you are unfamiliar with Puzzle Quest, the existing Warlords / Challenge of the Warlords have Players assume the role of a character with various statistics such as combat ability, morale, and magical affinity with combat being conducted entirely via turn-based puzzle action similar to Bejeweled or Zoo Keeper.

The news out today (link, link, link) - D3 Go! and Wizards of the Coast have partnered to create Magic: The Gathering - Puzzle Quest, a mobile game that blends the hypnotic match-3 puzzle elements of the popular Puzzle Quest franchise with the strategic gameplay and expansive lore of the groundbreaking Magic: The Gathering trading card game.

Magic: The Gathering - Puzzle Quest will be available to download for free on the App Store, Google Play and the Amazon Appstore this fall. Fans will have a chance to be among the first to play Magic: The Gathering - Puzzle Quest in the Annex at PAX Prime 2015 in Seattle on August 28-31.

Players will engage in pitched conflicts with rival Planeswalkers and monsters through intense match-3 puzzle battles, earning levels and amassing a collection of powerful creatures, spells and artifacts along the way.

Magic Duels - Origins Spoiler

The other day, IGN had posted a rather nice game play trailer video for the Magic Duels digital game, which is due to be release very soon.  Of particular interest to the spoiler nutters in the Magic: the Gathering Community is that there may be some cards within the digital game which gets a printing within the next and last core set, Magic Origins.  Before we get into the nitty-gritty, here's that trailer we speak of -

D15 M15 Spoilers

Summer has finally arrived here in Central Ontario marked by some high temperatures and unfortunately accompanying humidity.  Which leads us to our next public service announcement - protect your card collection from UV and humidity - get them out of sunlight and in a dry area.  We had once left a handful of cards from a booster pack pull near an open window for a few days.  We were going to give 'em to a few new players who hang out at a local community centre but the humidity kinda killed the edges, so straight into the recycling bin.

Anywhoos, we are throughly enjoying the video walk-throughs of the Magic 2015 Duels of the Planeswalkers - this digital game looks great with the new improvements and we are pumped that it will allow players to build their own decklists from scratch.  As both the (physical card) core set and digital game share a high level of integration, a number of cards within the digital game will be printed in the core set.  

 

The video walk-throughs provided by Liz Lamb-Ferro, Brand Manager at Wizards of the Coast, are very good but of interest to us is catching a glimpse of some new, never seen before cards which essentially suggests a print in the core set.  It goes without saying we'll want to pick all these up via a pre-order from MTG Mint Card.  Liz does an effective job of scrolling past at high speed some of the screens where we may see these cards but with some patience and luck we are able to float out some possible new cards.  Here are some (unofficial) Magic 2015 spoilers from a recent Game Spot video that have been mocked-up below -

As we head into the weekend, don't forget to get on out and play some Magic: the Gathering at a Friday Night Magic event being held at your local gaming store.  We have yet another edited build we'll be taking to OMG! Anywhoos, the big news today is of course the massive spoiler via a Magic 2015: Duels of the Planeswalker video walk-through from the digital games review site IGN and Wizards of the Coast Brand Manager Liz Lamb-Ferro.  The new 'n' improved MTG digital game to be released within a few weeks time of the Magic 2015 core set (analog game) shares a high level of integration with it and of course a number of cards.  From the walk-through we are able to determine with some certainty some new or reprinted cards we would likely see in the physical M15 core set game.

DotP 2015 Promo

We promise to provide a post rather soon to catch up with all the amazing Conspiracy spoilers and previews rather soon but for today we need to catch up on some other Magic: the Gathering news, so strap in and lets get to that now.

Off the hop, we have to talk about a Magic 2015 core set spoiler from German gaming site Gameswelt.  This new Magic: the Gathering card is to be one of two exclusive premium cards available to Duels of the Planeswalkers 2015 gamers who can obtain a redemption code in the digital game for a special M15 five card booster pack they can pick up at a local brick 'n' mortar gaming store.  The preview card today 'Soul of Zendikar' is reported to be the promo card for mobile / PC gamers and we expect to see the second promo card for Xbox players latter on.  Altough we have not yet seen the official release date of DotP 2015, the cardboard (paper) set will release on 18th July, 2014.  Here's the card in the original German with a translated mock-up (which of course may not be completely accurate).

This appears to be card number 201/269, illustrated by Eytan Zana, who had also recently provided art for the Conspiracy card 'Agent of Acquisitions'.  Soul of Zendikar is the fifth card revealed so far and joins Wall of Fire, Waste Not, Necromancer's Assistant, and Genesis Hydra.  And yes, we most definitely want to pick up all the singles so far from MTG Mint Card.

MTGO Vintage Masters

Way, way back in October of last year, WotC had announced on the mothersite, a new product for Magic Online gamers.  Magic: the Gathering players who have a hankering to get into Vintage format with a Magic Online account now have an opportunity with Vintage Masters.  This is a Magic Online-only reprint set that will be released on June 16, 2014 to help support the Vintage format.

Vintage Masters is to include the famous Power Nine cards (Black Lotus, the five Moxen, Timetwister, Time Walk and Ancestral Recall) as well as a number of new cards from the Conspiracy set.  In total there will be 325 cards with the following rarity:

• 9 specials
• 30 mythic rares
• 105 rares
• 80 uncommons
• 101 commons

Similar to regular 'paper' booster packs, each Vintage Masters booster pack will contain 15 randomly selected cards of 10 commons, 3 uncommons, 1 rare or mythic rare and 1 card that is either one of the Power Nine or a premium foil version of any card in the set (including the Power Nine).  In today's Magic Arcana, TrickMTG noted that the rarity of a Power Nine card is to be about once in 53 packs. A specific Power Nine card is about twice as rare as a specific mythic rare.  To allay concerns, WotC indicates there is no plans at this time to introduce another card rarity in to regular cardboard print.

Magic 2015 DotP

This weekend, the ultimate party for gamers is at PAX East in Boston.  Thousands of fans are expected to attend the multiple-day event for gaming.  But that's not all - expect all facets of N3rd / Geek culture with displays on anime, comics, cosplay and other awesomeness to be there too.  We are particularly interested in the Magic: the Gathering panel on Saturday where Wizards of the Coast is expected to provide an advanced glimpse of the upcoming set 'Journey into Nyx'.

WotC is also expected to unveil the very next installment of the 'Duels of the Planeswalkers' digital game.  Magic 2015 - Duels of the Planeswalkers will take the game to a whole new level, deeply engaging fans like never before. With new features including the ability to build customized decks, new booster packs with premium downloadable content, and an even more robust deck builder, players will take on their fiercest opponents culminating in the ultimate battle against Garruk.  Be sure to swing by the Magic: the Gathering Booth (#462) to be one of the first to play the demo game.
