Monday Miscelleany

~
Happy Monday MTG peeps,

For today's post, expect a bunch of non-related Magic: the Gathering miscelleany from over the course of the last three days or so.  Strap in and let's go.

First up -

The official announcement over on the mothersite today of the second set in the Theros block.  Born of the Gods is to be released on 7 February, 2013, and will be followed up by the third and last set 'Journey into Nyx' in this block.  Unfortunately, Wizards of the Coast did not preview any artwork with the announcement (again), which has some gamers vexed.  Of note is that there are an additional 20 extra cards (165 cards in total) that we do not usually see in a standard second set.
~

Second up -
A possible leak about the upcoming Theros set most likely via the Duel Decks: Heroes vs. Monsters product.  We are most definitely excited about this next block and have already planned to take adavantage of an early bird pre-order special that MTG Mint Card is having.  Again, we caution readers to rely solely upon officially previewed cards on the mothersite.  Here is what forum member 'Queeg' has for us - one could expect reprints for Pyrokinesis, Deus of Calamity, Nobilis of War in Duel Decks. In addition to that there's also news of these two new cards to be printed in both DD: HvM and Theros -

Polukranos, World-Eater, 2gg
Legendary Creature - Hydra
Monstrosity - xxg, : Put X +1/+1 counters on Polukranos World-Eater. Then, Polukranos, World-Eater deals damage equal to the number of counters put onto Polukranos this way among any number of target creatures. Those creatures deal damage to Polukranos, World-Eater equal to their power. Activate this ability only if there are no counters on Polukranos.
5/5

Some Boros guy, 1wr
Legendary
3/2
first strike, vigilance
Heroic - Whenever cardname is the target of a spell you control, creeatures you control get +1/+1, and gain trample until end of turn.

~

Third up -
Our Magic 2014 Game Day event at OMG! Games here in Barrie, Ontario, Canada-Land.  RStomp and RetroTech were busy so yours truly, CopySix went solo.  I had gone to the Sunday M14 Game Day event to avoid larger crowds and happened to come in fifth place with a Bant Hexproof build.  I had gone 2-2 and then dropped as I needed to be somewhere else.

Great games with Korie M. (aggressive G/W build - won against), Mike D. (nice mono-black with control elements - lost against), Ben F. (fast R/W Boros - won against - image above), and Dan S. (honestly cannot remember what Dan played - lost against).

Lastly, here's the Magic: the Gathering - Game Day Promos I had scored over the weekend -

Magic 2014 Intro Pack

~
Happy Monday MTG peeps,

For today's post, we wanted to get along to a review of a Magic 2014 Intro Pack.  These preconstructed theme decks are possibly the best way to get into Magic: the Gathering if you are new to the game, or if your more seasoned, a lot of players we know battle each other with Intro Packs which makes for a lot a fun as Wizards of the Coast makes all efforts to attempt to balance the power of these decks.

MTG Realm grabbed a new Magic: the Gathering Magic 2014 core set Intro Pack and a handful of M14 booster packs for this brief unboxing and review.

~
For a MRSP of only $15, here's what you get -

• Premium foil card
• A full 60 card deck
Two M14 booster packs
• Learn to play insert
• Strategy guide

We got the M14 'Lightforce' Intro Pack (white / green just happen to our fav colours) - Here's some descriptive text off the box -

Wield the power of light, booster your creatures with powerful enchantments.  If your opponents don't crumble under the first wave of your assault, they'll be primed for defeat when your larger beasts hit the battlefield.
With enchantments being hinted as being a thingy in 'Theros', the next set  this fall, we're certain to be well prepared to modify and take this Intro Pack to the next level.

Friday Tumblr Time

~
Happy Friday MTG peeps,

Big weekend for Magic: the Gathering players around the world as the latest core set, Magic 2014 will be landing in local gaming stores near you.  If you are unable to get to the M14 PreRelease this weekend, there is always the Friday Night Magic M14 Launch next weekend.  Unfortunately, we will not be able to get down to OMG! Games here in Barrie, Ontario for either the PreRelease or the Launch as we are heading up north to camp out under the stars (sounds awful doesn't it), so expect us back on-line in another week.  Shortly after we return we should have our pre-orders delivered from MTG Mint Card, so we are definitely excited.

It's that time to drop by our sister site MTG Realm on Tumblr to catch up with the latest Magic: the Gathering news, spoilers and rumours as well as a few helpful posts to hopefully assist you at the PreRelease this weekend - let's go!

Magic: the Gathering - WTF is a Cockatrice ?!?

MTG now has two cards with this creature type
Cockatrice - a flying green creature with with conditional deathtouch prints in Limited Alpha / Beta, Unlimited, Revised, Fourth, Fifth and Time Spiral.  A bit similar to Thicket Basilisk except without the feathers.
Deathgaze Cockatrice - a flying black creature with deathtouch newly minted for Magic 2014. Rulak (a bog guide) has this to say about Cockatrice - “Sometimes I come across a stone finger or foot and I know I’m in cockatrice territory."

So what the hell is it?
A cockatrice is a mythical beast, essentially a hybrid critter, two-legged dragon with a rooster’s head.  Its reputed magical abilities include turning people to stone or killing them outright by glaring at them similar to your mother-in-law’s gaze.  In this respect, they are related to Gorgons or Basilisks. The weasel is reported to be the only animal that is immune to the deathly glance of a cockatrice.

Aside : This critter reminds me of the Krafayis from the Doctor Who episode ‘Vincent and the Doctor’.

M14 FAQ

~
Happy Wednesday MTG peeps,

This is our second post for the day.  If you missed our first post about the Magic 2014 PreRelease, click on over here.

In this post, we wanted to let Magic: the Gathering players including those heading off to the PreRelease event this weekend to pop on over to the Mothersite and get in a quick review of the Magic 2014 FAQ document.

Here's a quick 'n' dirty summary without getting into the card specific notes -
~

Wizards of the Coast, Tuesday, July 09, 2013

The Magic 2014 core set contains 249 cards (101 common, 60 uncommon, 53 rare, 15 mythic rare, and 20 basic land).

Prerelease events: July 13–14, 2013
Launch Weekend: July 19–21, 2013
Game Day: August 10–11, 2013

The Magic 2014 core set becomes legal for sanctioned Constructed play on its official release date: Friday, July 19, 2013. At that time, the following card sets will be permitted in the Standard format: Innistrad, Dark Ascension, Avacyn Restored, Magic 2013, Return to Ravnica, Gatecrash, Dragon's Maze, and Magic 2014.

~
Returning Theme: Slivers
Magic 2014 features the return of creatures with the creature type Sliver. These popular creatures share abilities or power and toughness bonuses with other Slivers you control.

Cycle: Magus Staffs
This set also includes a cycle of artifacts, each aligned to a color, that allow you to gain life for casting spells of that color or having basic lands of the type associated with that color enter the battlefield.

Returning Card Type: Planeswalkers
A planeswalker is a powerful ally who fights by your side. With the exception of the "planeswalker uniqueness rule" (see the separate section below), the rules for planeswalkers have not changed with this release.

~
Rule Change: The "Planeswalker Uniqueness Rule"
Previously, if there were two or more planeswalkers that share a subtype (such as "Jace") on the battlefield, they would all be put into their owners' graveyards as a state-based action. This rule is changing. The new rule is as follows:

704.5j If a player controls two or more planeswalkers that share a planeswalker type, that player chooses one of them and the rest are put into their owners' graveyards. This is called the "planeswalker uniqueness rule."

Rule Change: The "Legend Rule"
Although there are no legendary permanents in the Magic 2014 Core Set , the "legend rule" is changing along with this set. Under the previous rule, whenever two or more legendary permanents with the same name were on the battlefield, they were all put into their owners' graveyards as a state-based action. This rule is changing to the following:

704.5k If a player controls two or more legendary permanents with the same name, that player chooses one of them and the rest are put into their owners' graveyards. This is called the "legend rule."

New Keyword: Indestructible
Indestructible is a new keyword for an existing ability.
