MTG Monday Miscellany

~
Happy Monday MTG peeps,

We have again here at MTG Realm another batch of Magic: the Gathering news and updates, so strap in and let's go.

First up - Results from Columbus

Congratulations to Tom Ross to winning the StarCityGames.com Modern Open tournament in Columbus this past weekend witha G/W Tron list.  Jack Kiefer took first place in standard at the venue with a W/U Flash build.

You can see the full lists for Standard and Modern over at SCG.  Of interest for Modern was a Mono-White Martyr of Sands list played by Lance Shultz who had placed 26th.  On the standard side, the metagame looks to be predominantly W/U Flash, and B/G Delirium lists.  There were however two decklists of note which posted decent results - B/U Zombies played by Steve Rubin who had placed 4th and a G/R Energy list played by Andrew Eales who had placed 7th.

Second - Eternal Masters Reprint

There is to be a "modest" reprint of Eternal Masters.  Eternal Masters is a booster-based compilation set containing cards legal in, and intended for, the Legacy, Commander, and Vintage formats.  Originally released on released on June 10, 2016, expect to see to see these in store likely within another month or so.

~
Third - Standard Showdown

Announced on the mothersite linked here, Wizards of the Coast have announced an interesting prize support scheme to improve / boost in-store standard format play.  The announcement indicates 10 'Standard Showdown' prize packs for each store holding a standard format tournament on Saturdays between November 26 through December 17 (for a total of 40 prized boosters).

Each Standard Showdown prize booster will contain three cards each. These boosters will contain:

• A premium card from a currently legal Standard set, including Zendikar Expeditions and Kaladesh Inventions, not including double-faced cards.

• Two non-premium cards that are either a rare or a mythic rare from a set currently legal in Standard* (Battle for Zendikar through Kaladesh).

Cards from Oath of the Gatewatch and double-faced cards are not included within the prize booster pack.  The announcement also indicates that Zendikar Expeditions and Kaladesh Inventions appear in roughly 1 in 33 boosters.  Not to shabby we think.
~
Also announced on the Mothersite - Planechase Anthology

This was originally announced in the massive 'Announcement Day' posted back in May which did not include much in the way of details.  Today's announcement however did provide all the nitty-gritty including product image.

Essentially, Planechase Anthology is a product in the Planechase series that gathers the previous Planechase products together in one package to be released by on November 25, 2016.

Planechase Anthology will contain the following:
• Four Planechase 2012 theme decks
• A set of 86 oversized Planar cards:
• A set of 40 plane cards from Planechase (2009)
• A set of 32 plane and 8 phenomenon cards from Planechase 2012
• Six 6 promotional plane cards: Celestine Reef, Horizon Boughs, Mirrored Depths, Stairs to Infinity, Tazeem, and Tember City
• Four slide deck boxes
• An Oversize slide deck box
• A set of 35 double-faced tokens

• Four Spindown life counters

• A strategy insert

Eternal Masters Supply & Demand

~
Happy Tuesday MTG peeps,

What likely catch captivated the attention of most Magic: the Gathering players over the weekend was the release of the special ('one-off') summer set of Eternal Masters.  Like Modern Masters, released in 2013 and in 2015, these sets have a higher expected average value of the cards contained in each booster and a more limited print run resulting in a higher (MSRP) sticker price.

Where Modern Masters may have had a limited print run, Eternal Masters has a "very" limited print run.  There are quite a number of reports from a gamers to local gaming store owners indicating that there will not be any second print run or re-stock.  Some claim that retailers claiming no anticipated product restock work to the retailers benefit providing them license to charge more. The Eternal Booster box contains 24 packs (a perfect number to draft with) and here in our region (Central Ontario, Canada), the booster box costs about $360 and booster packs go for about $16.

If you are drafting, then the cost could be likened to what you may spend on a trip to the movies (food 'n' all) or a drinks out at a pub.  We think you would be on the right path if you spent this money as being funds allocated for entertainment.

On YouTube, there are a number of unboxing vidoes of fans cracking packs hoping to lucky enough to pull one or more of the high value cards for re-sale to the secondary market.  Pulling a Mana Crypt, Force of Will, Karakas or a foil Jace, the Mind Sculptor at a worth around a $100 does go a long wat for you to 'recover' the value of your investment but there is real danger here.  The big question for those wanting to receive value is simply - 'Is it worth it to buy into Eternal Masters?'.

Consider this - out of the 69 Mythic Rares and Rares in the set, only about 19 of these cards (>$10) are valuable enough to equate to the value of a booster pack.  For each one of those videos showing a really amazing box, there are likely a dozen other individuals less than satisfied with their return.   We think you would be most happy having the mindset of gaming with the set rather than attempting to turn an economic profit.

Singles Prices - Expect great variance and volatility -

Mana Crypt (M) $98.31
Force of Will (M) $91.76
Karakas (M) $85.01
Jace, the Mind Sculptor (M) $69.00
Wasteland (R) $48.85
Sneak Attack (M) $27.00
Natural Order (M) $26.65
Vampiric Tutor (M) $25.86
Sensei's Divining Top (R) $22.00
Sylvan Library (R) $19.99
Dack Fayden (M) $19.99
Maze of Ith (R) $18.25
Entomb (R) $17.70
Sinkhole (R) $15.74
Gamble (R) $15.00
Chrome Mox (M) $14.95
Maelstrom Wanderer (M) $12.34

MTG Conspiracy Puzzle

~
Happy Wednesday (again) MTG peeps,

Betcha did not expect to hear from us again.  This is our second post to the MTG Realm blog today - our earlier post may be found here.   Why the second post? Magic: the Gathering news of course! The subject at hand concerns BOTH Eternal Masters (releasing this very weekend) AND Conspiracy: Take the Crown.  We know - very exciting.  Let's get down to it then -

About three days ago, redditor 'anothermtgtosser' (nice handle), had posted a rather interesting set of images to Imgur.  The images showed lines of (cut-off) text on the sides of marketing inserts - specifically, those adverts from the back of token cards obtained from Eternal Masters booster packs.  We won't ask the details of opening EMA boosters before the official release this Friday, but we will draw your attention to the claim that once several of these cards are placed together, sentences may be realised.

The bright MTG fans went straight to work at starting to assemble more cards as shown above, it was soon understood that more cards needed to be obtained to determine the full message of this puzzle.  One individual, zingfrod did solve this and it required a full 11 cards by 11 cards to clarify two messages . . .

SPOILER ALERT
DO NOT READ FURTHER
PUZZLE SOLVED

We warned  you - here is is . .

The message are as follows -

Free citizens of Paliano: When you fell asleep last night, you were loyal. You laid down your heads as steadfast servants of the one true king of Paliano, Brago the Eternal. Perhaps you did not love him. It is not the role of a ruler to be loved. But you obeyed him, and you respected him, as any citizen should. You awakened as unwitting traitors beneath the blood-stained banner of a usurper queen: Marchese the Black Rose, a known assassin and plotter, a criminal of the highest order whose veiled threats and hidden thorns have allowed her for far too long to flaunt the law of Paliano. She has made you traitors by raising her flag above the palace and placing the crown upon her treacherous brow. She has forced you to choose between loyalty to the crown and loyalty to your city. Somehow, this vile deceiver murdered King Brago, ending his immortal existence and dispersing the essence of his spirit. She inserted herself into the sovereign’s will and testament – a document forged, no doubt, from whole cloth. For why would the King Eternal have a will at all? And if he did, why would he name the murderous daughter of a fallen house to rule in his place? Somehow, she commands the loyalty of the Custodi Priests who once made the King’s word manifest in the world. Alongside them stand numerous servants of the throne who cannot or dare not question her right to rule, and in the shadows lurks her own existing network of thieves, spies, saboteurs, informants, and assassins. Already the false queen raises her own sigil, the emblem of the Black Rose, above Paliano. She would quietly ignore the symbol of our city, the symbol Brago carried with him of his own sword, an image so endearing, so emblematic of our city and its’ lawful ruler, that the Custodi consider it a religious icon in its’ own right. Oh, the Custodi wave it even now, and it means as little from them as it ever did. But the banners of the city troops have already changed. You will not see that symbol in the halls of Marchesa’s palace or on the shields of her defenders. She claims to rule legitimately, to have the interests of the city at heart, but the flag that has flown above us all these years is absent at her own command. And why? The reason is simple. Marchesa has no right to that sign of our city’s history, and she knows it. She wears the crown and sits upon the throne but she does not carry the sword of Brago – the blade that bears the symbol of our city. I know this because I now carry that sword, and with it the burden of upholding law and order in Paliano. I have been stripped of my title by the traitor queen, but I do not relinquish it. I hold this sword, this symbol, this duty to defend our city from all its’ enemies – even and especially an enemy who sits upon the throne. I have no wish to rule, only to unseat the usurper so that we may determine our rightful sovereign in the wake of King Brago’s tragic end. Marchesa would have you to stand with her, in service to a true crown that rests upon a false head, and thereby she would make you a traitor. I offer you a different path! Stand with me, and with Brago, and show your loyalty to your city through your disobedience to the pretender. If her flag is not your flag, then do not bow to it. IF her rule is illegitimate, then so too are her laws. If she is not truly queen, then the servants of the throne are no better than her spies or assassins, and should be treated accordingly. What say you, citizens of Paliano? Do you stand with the city, or with its’ self-proclaimed queen? Are you loyal rebels, or obedient traitors? As long as Marchesa sits upon the throne, you are one or the other. Make your choice! – Adriana, Captain of the Guard

People of the High City! It is my solemn duty to inform you that Brago, King of Paliano, is no more. His death shocked the city all those years ago, his spiritual continuance brought joy and relief to us all. Now, he has at last passed truly and forever beyond the veil. His long reign has come to an end, and his spirit is finally granted the eternal rest it deserves. In his beneficent wisdom, our late king appointed a successor with the will and the strength to bring peace to his beloved city. As his designated heir, recognized by the sacred order of custodi as his one and true successor, I vow to uphold the laws of Paliano, to maintain order in the city, and to see that justice is served swiftly and even-handedly. Though I know that I will never be a worthy heir to a man whose commitment to his city transcended life itself, I must hope that, with the blessings of the custodi, I am able to guide our fair city to a new age of prosperity. The transfer of power is always difficult, and all the more so when the end of a monarch’s reign comes unexpectedly. Even loyal and steadfast servants of the crown may find themselves ill-equipped to serve a new monarch in the same capacity as the old. As of now, the post of Captain of the Guard is disbanded. The soldiers of this city will now report directly to me. The former captain has retired with thanks from our fair city and a generous pension from the throne that will support her for the rest of her life, however long that life may be. In the absence of any natural heir, Brago made his intentions for the disposition of his throne quite clear. Lamentably, not all of the king’s former vassals respect his final wishes. Those who might use this transition as an excuse for rebellion should know that treason will be answered, as it always has been, with the harshest punishments, while loyalty will be rewarded lavishly. May fortune shine upon Paliano!

As proclaimed by her Majesty Queen, Marchesa, The Black Rose, First of her name, Head of the Council, Guarantor of Lawful Governance, Soul Sovereign of the High City, True Heir to the Throne of Paliano and all the rights and privileges thereof.
We love what Wizards of the Coast has been doing so far with this Conspiracy set as well as the previous one.

Cho-Arrim

~
Happy Wednesday MTG,

Today's Magic Story installment was titled 'All That Came Before' and was penned by Leah Potyondy.  The fiction today was fabulous and was timed rather well with the upcoming Eternal Masters set.  The one card which was fairly central to the story was Ancestral Mask - we posted this very kewl art to the MTG Realm Tumblr blog earlier today.

We did not start playing Magic: the Gathering until Lorwyn block and really did not know very much of the storyline in the Masques block (Mecadian Masques, Nemesis, Prophecy) from back in 1999-2000.  Today's story was focuses on the Cho-Arrim, a group of humans residing with the massive Rushwood forest.  These people share some traits with the common notion of Elves in that they are a mystical and spiritual folk with a deep sense of appreciation for nature and specifically the (magical) Rushwood forest which which in turn protects them.
There is a threat to the Cho-Arrim from Mercadia City which wants to assert its authority over the forest and its peoples.  A sickness or plague overcomes many within the Cho-Arrim village and Mercadia is suspect in this.  This very well written story wraps ups with the main character, Cho-Akhan gaining an old power which may provide a defense against the Mercadians.

Eternal Masters Tokens

~
Happy Monday MTG peeps,

We kicked off the weekend on Friday evening with some games at our favourite gaming store, OMG! Games, here in Barrie, Ontario where we went with our take on Blue / White Humans decklist.  It was a bit too grindy, so we are now working on fine tuning the mana-base as well as the sideboard.  We can say that when this thing did fire, it was pretty damn impressive.  Moving on to Saturday and Sunday, we had a series of Commander games at the MTG Realm Lair with R-Tech taking the lead (she was rather happy about this) and R-Stomp going back to the drawing board with his mono-black list.

Eternal Masters Full Spoiler

~
Happy Saturday MTG peeps,

The remaining cards from the Eternal Masters set not yet previewed went up yesterday with fanfare from some and sour grapes from others.  The MTG Realm playgroup members have a favourable opinion of the set - we think it is going to deliver big fun on draft and has enough sought-after reprints to make Commander players like us happy.  We will say however that you may wish to think twice about paying much more beyond that of the manufacturers suggested price of $10 per pack.  Unlike Modern Masters 2 which contained a lot more valuable gems, Eternal Masters is not quite there in terms of secondary market value, but we do leave this to your discretion.

Eternal Masters Previews 5-26

~
Happy Thursday MTG peeps,

We continue to be very impressed with the cards getting reprints in the upcoming Eternal Masters set out next month.  Just when we thought we have seen the best of the set in the previous day's previews, WoTC delivers another lovely bunch of cards to tickle our fancy.

After the full set is delivered, we hope to provide a few further Eternal Masters posts to the MTG Realm blog including a new card art review and our suggestions for general strategies for each colour you may be drafting.

For now, here is a summary of the new Eternal Masters previews revealed today -

Ancestral Mask - Sweet!  Happy to see this reprinted.

Argothian Enchantress - Ditto - as above - go green subtheme.

Brainstorm - If you're drafting blue, auto-include this.

Burning Vengeance - You'll have to work hard to make this work in draft.

Call the Skybreaker - Decent.

Emperor Crocodile - OK.

Firebolt - Nice cheap burn.

Giant Solifuge - Weird 'n' interesting.

Goblin Trenches - Damn fine choice - loving it!

Green Sun's Zenith - Happy to see this - helluva limited bomb here.
Hydroblast - again - damn fine inclusion.

Innocent Blood - We'll take this any day of the week.

Isochron Scepter - Rather nice card, but we would pass in limited.

Karmic Guide - meh.

Man-o'-War - solid limited choice in blue.

Mesa Enchantress - apparently you should be pushing a green / white enchantment theme when drafting.

Mother of Runes - Rather lovely reprint here and not a bad choice for either limited or constructed in white.

Natural Order - Great inclusion here - want this for both limited and Commander.

Nausea - OK reprint, are there token-generators in this set other than Goblin Trenches?

Oona's Grace - another decent inclusion for blue.

Price of Progress - Nice! More for commander than draft here.

Pyroblast - Another lovely inclusion for red.

Quiet Speculation - Certainly not for EMA draft - there is only 3 cards so far with flashback and in three different colours.

Sinkhole - If you opened this, we think you would be happy for days.

Squadron Hawk - There are players to play the Hawk and others who are just plain wrong. (Seriously WotC, why is this here?)

Sulfuric Vortex - Don't think we need this.

Wee Dragonauts - Not bad if you are in these colours.

Wildfire Emissary - OK.

Winter Orb - Nice reprint - love it for the right Commander Deck - if you are drafting, just pass.

Eternal Masters is a booster-based compilation set containing cards legal in, and intended for, the Legacy, Commander, and Vintage formats. It is scheduled to be released on June 10, 2016.  All these cards are reprints and each booster to contain 15 randomly inserted game cards, including one foil card in every pack.

Eternal Masters Previews 5-25

~
Happy Wednesday MTG peeps,

We're suggesting you pop on over to the mothersite and read the latest installment of official Magic Story - The Prodigal Sorcerers, penned by Mark Price.  This, of course, hints at one new Eternal Masters card getting the nod for a reprint.  Yep - you guessed correctly - Prodigal Sorcerer, which is also featured in today's wallpaper ready for you to download and freshen up your desktop, social media page or other device.

We want to jump the gun and yatter about all the new card arts being provided but will wait and do a proper Eternal Masters art review in a separate post when we have seen all the new previews.  Speaking of new previews, let's have a summary of all Eternal Masters previews since yesterday's post to the MTG Realm blog.

Ashnod's Altar - pretty damn awesome.
Baleful Strix - nobody cares.
Cabal Therapy - wanting this.
Chain Lightning - lovely.
Counterspell - whatever.
Gaea's Blessing - much needed reprint.
Hymn To Tourach - loving it.
Ichorid - would kinda suck in limited we think.
Maelstrom Wanderer - Commander players loving it.

Mystical Tutor - Damn fine.
Nevinyrral's Disk - nice, but why?
Prodigal Sorcerer - right in the nostalgia !!
Regal Force - great choice.
Rorix Bladewing - meh.
Shardless Agent - kewl beanz.

Unexpectedly Absent - why this crap?
Vindicate - happy to see this.
Void - OK.
Wrath of God - definitely needed another printing.

Eternal Masters is a booster-based compilation set containing cards legal in, and intended for, the Legacy, Commander, and Vintage formats. Eternal Maters Previews 5-24

~
Happy Tuesday MTG peeps,

Welcome to Day Two of official Eternal Masters previews.  Eternal Masters is a booster-based compilation set containing cards legal in, and intended for, the Legacy, Commander, and Vintage formats. It is scheduled to be released on June 10, 2016.

If you thought that yesterday's previews were pretty darn good, you will want to be fully seated for today's previews.

- *internal screaming!* -

There are some fantastic reprints showed today that we have been wanting to get our paws onto for some time.  Take, just as an example, Enlightened Tutor - not terribly expensive - perhaps around $15 - but since it last saw print in 1999, good luck finding one at a card shop - this card is about as rare as a unicorn.  The very same is true for another Vampiric Tutor - sure perhaps only 30 bucks or so but finding one is like finding a discarded winning lottery ticket.  Today's Eternal Masters previews also includes awesome reprints of sought-after lands such as Karakas and Maze of Ith.

Today's previews look sweet and we are definitely pumped to see what is going up tomorrow.  For now, here is a quick summary of previews -

Animate Dead
Balance
Control Magic
Dack Fayden
Diminishing Returns
Dualcaster Mage
Enlightened Tutor
Entomb
Giant Tortoise

Karakas
Mana Crypt
Maze of Ith
Mishra's Factory
Sensei's Divining Top
Shaman of the Pack
Timberwatch Elf
Vampiric Tutor
Werebear
Wirewood Symbiote

Eternal Masters

~
Happy Monday MTG peeps,

Some news from the mothersite today.  We head rumours and whispers of this a little while ago on the Magic: the Gathering fan forums but very little other than there was to be no 'Modern Masters' product offering but rather a substitution of sorts.

Here at MTG Realm, we are not very much into draft or the eternal format but we can certainly declare our excitement about getting our paws on a few cards we hope may be included in this set for Commander.  The fan community is pretty damn hyped about it but is certainly tempered with the suggested retail price of ten clams a booster pack.  The local gaming stores will likely retail these bad boys for about double the MSRP, so brace yourselves for this very real possibility.  We imagine that cracking a pack of Eternal Masters would be not very different from opening a box of Christmas or a getting a basket of puppies.

Anywhoos, here is the 411 from WotC -
