Friday MTG Miscellany

~
Happy Friday MTG peeps,

Although it may have been a slower week here on the MTG Realm blog, we still had a flurry of Magic: the Gathering related posts to our sister site, MTG Realm on Tumblr, so today's post will be a regurgitation of select content over there.

If you are off work tonight or do not have to cram for an exam, take a breather and head on out to a Friday Night Magic event tonight.  We'll be off to our favourite local gaming store, OMG Games, here in Barrie, Ontario where we hope to exploit the current standard constructed metagame (and not play one of the two ubiquitous popular decklists).

Anywhoos, let's get caught up with some posts -

Another amazing gaming store wall mural to follow up our previous post.  Here, we see a beautiful piece inspired by the iconic art of Jace, the Mind Sculptor from the Worldwake set, illustrated by Jason Chan.  Posted by  Luciana ‘Lu’ Couto of City Class Games in Osasco, São Paulo, Brazil.

Happy Friday MTG peeps,

After you wrap up school or work (hopefully no evening classes or night shifts) get thyself to a local gamery shoppe and get some Magic: the Gathering going with a Friday Night Magic event.  If you don't know where your local WPN store is, pop on over the Store and Event Locator here.  Should you find yourself in Barrie, Ontario (just north of Toronto), do drop in to our favourite store, OMG! Games, a stone's throw away from Georgian College in the City's north end.

Anywhoos, today on MTG Realm, we want to share what's been going on at our sister site, MTG Realm on Tumblr.  Here are the latest 'n' greatest -

MTG Tumblr Thursday

~
Happy Thursday MTG peeps,

Tonight is Commander night again so expect a few members of the MTG Realm play group to be less than 100% fully charged Friday morning from Magic: the Gathering games going really long, late or into the early morning.  Speaking of Friday, ensure you get thee to a local gamery shoppe for Friday Night Magic.  Why?  Because Friday the 13th !! That's why.  Many gaming stores are having special FNM events with Shadows Over Innistrad in standard play and at OMG! Games here in Barrie, Ontario there is a lot of prizes and fun on tap for tomorrow night.

For today's post, we are again rounding up posts from our sister site, MTG Realm on Tumblr, but before we go there, do drop by the Mothersite post Diego Fumagalli with this very awesome article 'How to Standard - In Graphics'.  We love graphics, infographics and everything in between, especially when it involves our fav game Magic: the Gathering.  Righto - on to Tumblr now -

Magic: the Gathering - Alphabet Soup

Check out these SWEET-ARSE blank MTG tokens from the brilliant and witty mind of card alter gal Ellie Shakirova (her Etsy shop over here).  This is a full alphabet set of 26 cards with matte lamination with appropriate place for you to pen in the token name and power / toughness.

God Bless the souls of the Redditors who also had a bit of fun with this project at the expense of a certain ubiquitous blue mind-mage -

MTG April Fools

~
Happy Friday MTG peeps,

This weekend, countless Magic: the Gathering players are heading to their local gaming stores to partake in the Shadows Over Innistrad PreRelease event.  Wishing all players the best of luck, have a fun time and may the odds be forever in your favour.  If you happen to find yourself in Central Ontario over the weekend, drop by OMG! Games, here in Barrie, Ontario, Canada-Land where, at midnight tonight, right after Friday Night Magic, they will be starting prerelease tournaments all weekend long.

Anywhoos, back to the title of today's post to MTG Realm - 'April Fool's Day.  This interesting day probably has something to do the ancient Roman festival of Hilaria, held on March 25th, but here in North America today, it is all about fun and frivolity.  Here is a quick roundup of some related posts to our sister blog, MTG Realm on Tumblr -

Magic: the Gathering - TCG: TINY CARD GAME
All the fun of your standard Magic deck, now in super-concentrated form.  Travel Edition includes everything you need to play head-to-head.  Pick up a Expansion Pack to customize your MtG-TE deck - available only during April Fool’s Day.

http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/ivpi/?cpg=wotc

Considering it has the word “Gathering” in its title, you’d think Magic would be more of a travel game. Not that it’s difficult to carry around, but it is challenging to play in an impromptu location. You’ve got your deck with you. Your friends have their decks with them. Now all you need is 2 feet of lateral space on a flat surface each, and you’ll be good to go. It doesn’t sound like much, but it is. Those of you who end up at tournaments playing with mats overlapping your neighbors’ know what we’re talking about. And your tray table on the airplane just isn’t going to cut it. So if you can’t get more space, what’s your other option?

Smaller cards. That’s why ThinkGeek and Wizards of the Coast have come together to released a new Magic: The Gathering - Travel Edition just in time for the summer travel season. With 120 mini cards, MtG-TE has all the fun of your standard Magic deck, now in super-concentrated form. The carrying case itself turns into a Battle Board with an integrated playmat and life counters for a head-to-head duel. And don’t fret that you might not be able to read the abilities / flavor text on your mini cards. MtG-TE comes with 2 pairs of Battle Magnifier goggles, also handy for reading the small print on those commercials for prescription drugs where the side effects are nausea, vomiting, and spontaneous combustion. If you enjoy MtG-TE, we encourage you to pick up a expansion pack and build your own travel deck that’s a force to be reckoned with.

MTG Halloween

~
Happy Wednesday MTG peeps,

Halloween is quickly approaching, and is this very weekend.  In preparation, we've got our three kids employed in installing the appropriate decorations and have some nicely-carved pumpkins at the front door.  Other time-honoured customs are also being addressed ahead of the 31st, like watching a bunch of thriller / horror movies, etc.  The kids are not easily scared by this - but - what does scare the dickens out of them are vegetables when they appear on the dinner table.  Imagine then if one were to anthropomorphize said vegetable - you would take the scare to another level.  But wait!  That's already been done by Wizards of the Coast.  The follow-up set to Unglued, which was to feature a number of frightful vegetable never got made, but we still have some remnants to enjoy -

Gangrene Pepper | illustrated by Edward Beard Jr.
Mad Beatdown | illustrated by Mike Raabe
Swarm of Pickles | illustrated by Ron Spencer

Rutabaga of the Night | illustrated by Heather Hudson

Signing off for now to work out costumes.  Speaking of signing off, another tradition up here is the unfortunate, but witty vandalism of the 'welcome to Angus' sign (not far removed from here in Barrie, Ontario), on 'Devil's Night', where a strategic letter is removed.

Tumblr Tuesday

~
Happy Tuesday MTG peeps,

We hope all had a great weekend, and to our cousins to the south, a pleasant memorial day weekend.  The big ticket event this weekend was of course Modern Masters 2015 release.  If you took in a local event or played in one of the large grand prix events, chances are much fun was had.

Anywhoos, for today's post, we wanted to catch up with our sister site, MTG Realm on Tumblr, so strap in and let's go -

Magic: the Gathering - SCG Playmat

Most MTG players already know that popular (and much meme’d) card and card art Tasigur, the Golden Fang illustrated by Chris Rahn.  What you may not know is that StarCityGames has another witty playmat which parodies that former Sultai Khan.  Check out the awesome kitteh illustration from ALRadeck for the StarCityGames Open Series.  Say meow to Tasipurr the Golden Paw which I’ve understood is to be available during SCG Season Three to event participants.

Magic: the Gathering - CF Ranked
The Power Rankings on Channel Fireball has always been a fairly accurate representation of what is on the tables at my local Friday Night Magic event.

Interesting comments on Den Protector which I think is spot on.  Not to gush here but I liked the card when it first came out and picked these up when it was going for under $2.  Now these fetch around the $10 mark.   : )

Magic: the Gathering - Jewels
Wizards of the Coast produced these very limited (non-precious) pendants back in 2007 after the iconic Moxes (or moxen) and called it the Jewels Series which consisted of one boxed set of the following -
* Mox Jet Necklace
* Mox Pearl Necklace
* Mox Ruby Necklace
* Mox Emerald Necklace
* Mox Sapphire Necklace

If you have this complete still-in-the-box set, collecting dust on your shelf, you can sell it for approximately $600+ today.

Tumblr Thursday

~
Happy Thursday MTG peeps,

We here at MTG Realm were planning to do an article about post- Dragons of Tarkir updates to Orzhov (Black / White) Warriors and / or Jeskai Tokens, but then we got lazy and decided it was high time to get to another catch-up with what's been going on over at our sister blog, MTG Realm on Tumblr, so strap in and let's drive.
