Tumblr Tuesday

~
Happy Tuesday MTG peeps,

We hope all had a great weekend, and to our cousins to the south, a pleasant memorial day weekend.  The big ticket event this weekend was of course Modern Masters 2015 release.  If you took in a local event or played in one of the large grand prix events, chances are much fun was had.

Anywhoos, for today's post, we wanted to catch up with our sister site, MTG Realm on Tumblr, so strap in and let's go -

Magic: the Gathering - SCG Playmat

Most MTG players already know that popular (and much meme’d) card and card art Tasigur, the Golden Fang illustrated by Chris Rahn.  What you may not know is that StarCityGames has another witty playmat which parodies that former Sultai Khan.  Check out the awesome kitteh illustration from ALRadeck for the StarCityGames Open Series.  Say meow to Tasipurr the Golden Paw which I’ve understood is to be available during SCG Season Three to event participants.

Magic: the Gathering - CF Ranked
The Power Rankings on Channel Fireball has always been a fairly accurate representation of what is on the tables at my local Friday Night Magic event.

Interesting comments on Den Protector which I think is spot on.  Not to gush here but I liked the card when it first came out and picked these up when it was going for under $2.  Now these fetch around the $10 mark.   : )

Magic: the Gathering - Jewels
Wizards of the Coast produced these very limited (non-precious) pendants back in 2007 after the iconic Moxes (or moxen) and called it the Jewels Series which consisted of one boxed set of the following -
* Mox Jet Necklace
* Mox Pearl Necklace
* Mox Ruby Necklace
* Mox Emerald Necklace
* Mox Sapphire Necklace

If you have this complete still-in-the-box set, collecting dust on your shelf, you can sell it for approximately $600+ today.

Magic: the Gathering - Cardboard Clad

This is Jose Raul Megias Iglesias.

He is the big cheese at gaming store El bazar de Iglesias in Granada, Spain.

He literally breathes, sweats, and wears MTG cards (and duel decks!) and is most relaxed in direct contact with them.

Tumblr Tuesday

~
Happy Tuesday MTG peeps,

The overarching theme this last weekend for Magic: the Gathering fans at least in our corner of Canada was Commander 2014.  It appeared that more gamers were picking up the full (all five boxes) of C14 than we recall last year.  There was a lot of excitement at our local card shop, OMG! Games here in Barrie and we were happy that locally, the big box stores did not appear to yet have them on shelves which equates to a healthier / happier brick 'n' mortar WPN retailer.

For today, we wanted to wish everyone a safe / reflective Vetran's Day (south of the border) or Remembrance Day here in Canada-Land.  As for today's post, we are visiting our sister site MTG Realm on Tumblr to see what those scamps have been up to lately.

Ignite Your Spark

~
Happy Monday MTG peeps,

It's sort of a good news and bad news today.  The motherboard on our machine finally cack'd and we're moving into a new machine (the new iMac), which is kind of like moving IRL and a pain in the posterior.  Given this, we'll rise from the ashes in the next few days or so, which is also when we'll have a ring at our door from the courier delivering a box of awesome new Theros singles from MTG Mint Card.

Anywhoos - for today's post - some news which will make CosPlay fans happy.  Wizards has wrapped up their 'Ignite Your Spark Contest', which challenged fans to submit a photo of themselves auditioning to become the Planeswalker of their choice. Contestants could choose any of the following Planeswalkers: Ajani Goldmane, Chandra Nalaar, Elspeth Tirel, Garruk Wildspeaker, Gideon Jura, Jace Beleren, Karn, Koth of the Hammer, Liliana vess, Nicol Bolas, Nissa Revane, Ral Zarek, Sarkhan Vol, Sorin Markov, Tamiyo, Tezzeret, Tibalt, Venser, or Vraska.

Felicia Day made the announcement over on the mothersite today . . .

Congratulations to Laura H. (Sumyuna Cosplay) from Madrid, Spain, on her winning Chandra cosplay! Laura will win a trip for two to a PAX of her choice in 2014!
'After some destructive attempts at pyromancy trying to imitate Chandra, Laura proposes herself as a stand-in for her promotional duties and leave her free to go on with the usual incinerating business.'

Fan Favorite winner Christine X. (Cspranklerun / Christine Sprankle) - Wins a laptop and a Magic swag bag including a copy of Magic 2014: Duels of the Planeswalkers
'I am Elspeth. I live my Dreams as a Planeswalker playing Magic: The Gathering. You too can become a Champion of Light, Knowledge, Nature, Fire or Death. Live the Game. Play the Game.'

Elspeth IRL

~
Happy Tuesday MTG peeps,

From a cursory review of the 900 or so posts here on MTG Realm, you may realise that we have a soft spot for Elspeth, no matter which Planeswalker variant she may manifest herself in. Whether she's giving evasion for an alpha-strike in Shards of Alara or blowing up boards in Scars of Mirrodin, we love her moves.

Enter Christine Sprankle, a California gal who just happens to loves magic and CosPlay. During the recent Magic the Gathering World Championship this weekend in San Francisco, not only was Channel Fireball's 'Fireball Steel' deck getting a lot of attention, so was Sprankle. So much so, that WoTC's minion, Blake Rasmussen even provided a feature article on the MTG World's coverage line-up.

Why ? Because this is what she wore to game . . .

Sure, we had witnessed a good number of CosPlay characters make an appearence before - from the beautiful trio of Serra Angels to that weird fat guy at FNM in the blue hoodie, but we don't think none had make quite a splash as Christine.

Serra Angels

Chandra, Sorin & Lilianna

We started playing Magic the Gathering about a year ago and took a liking to Elspeth after reading the Web Comics over on the mothership. As she is rather crafty and knows how to put together an amazing costume she took it to task to create a wonder Elspeth IRL (in real life).

Christine secured a coarse woven sweater and spray-painted it with silver to create the realistic looking chain mail. She also used cardboard, tape, and craft foam to flesh out Elspeth's armour.

Congratulations to Christine for the best-dress player at Worlds - not even the charismatic pro-player Brian Kibler in his excellent sports jackets could come close. You can check out Christine on Twitter HERE or her DeviantArt page HERE.

Lastly,

You don't want to be that player going over to your friends house or to the local game store with all your cards and dice in a chessy Crown Royal bag. We suggest you look at huge variety of supplies the folks over at MTG Mint Card has - protect your expensive cards with sleeves and protect your dignity by leaving that purple velvet bag at home.
