PAX Eldrazi

~
Happy Friday MTG peeps,

As it is Friday, we'll be heading down to our fav local gaming store, OMG! Games, here in Barrie, Ontario (by Georgian College in the City's north end) to try our hand at a few odd 'n' interesting home-brews - namely Izzet Heroic.  We hope to have a report next week as to how this decklist did against the local game.

Anywhoos, as we have no cash whatsoever, we will not be able to attend the MTG community's premier event of the year, PAX Prime 2015 in Seattle - but - through the wondrous miracle of the interweb, it will feel like we are (almost) there.  If you are like us, stay tuned to www.battleforzendikar.com for coverage of all things MTG at PAX this year.

As many had anticipated, there is a very strong Eldrazi theme to the festivities there -

Like that huge Eldrazi creating chaos outside of the Annex -

Righto - on to some Battle for Zendikar spoilers ! !  The first one comes to us as a proper spoiler, apparently from a Target supplier.
Hero of Goma Fada, 4W
Creature - Human Knight Ally, Rare
Rally — Whenever Hero of Goma Fada or another Ally enters the battlefield under your control, creatures you control gain indestructible until end of turn.
"They seek to break us. Let us show them our strength!"

. . . . And the second one - a proper preview card from Wizards of the Coast.  Yep - Landfall is Back !

Guardian of Tazeem, 3UU
Creature - Sphinx, Rare
Flying
Landfall — Whenever a land enters the battlefield under your control, tap target creature an opponent controls. If that land is an Island, that creature doesn't untap during its controller's next untap step.

Stay tuned to MTG Realm here on Blogger as well as Tumblr as we will update you on the latest Battle for Zendikar (and Commander 2015 hopefully) spoilers 'n' previews coming out of PAX this weekend.

Zendikar Story

~
Happy Thursday MTG peeps,

Quite some time ago, we had the sads real bad when WotC took away the 'mini-novel' that used to come in the Fat Pack.  They then took away the novellas meant to replace those Fat Pack novels.  They told us that they were going to expand and enhance the online content with the Forgotten Realms installment on the mothersite.

Well, I think Wizards of the Coast hit a home run.  We have been digg'n the regular weekly installments a lot.  The apprehension we had of different contributing authors have been unfounded and the pieced-together storyline which we fretted was to be some Frankenstein literary creation is, in fact pretty seamless in its delivery.

This weekend, be sure to catch up on the stories for the upcoming Battle for Zendikar set as well as catching all that (much anticipated / very exciting) news / announcements / and gameplay at PAX Prime in Seattle.  You can catch all of the action in one spot - www.battleforzendikar.com

For now, here is a quick run-down of the two installments to date.  Expect 'episode 3' to go up next Wednesday -

Episode 1: Slaughter at the Refuge
Gideon brings Jace to Zendikar to solve the "mystery of the hedrons," but instead of arriving in a safe camp of Sea Gate refugees, the Planeswalkers find themselves in a scene of carnage. Before Jace can get to work, he and Gideon must fight their way through the Eldrazi horde in search of survivors.

Episode 2: The Silent Cry
Nissa is bonded with the soul of the land and she wields the full power of Zendikar as she fights the Eldrazi alongside her towering elemental companion, Ashaya. She feels unstoppable—until everything is ripped away. When Zendikar stops responding to her call, when Ashaya collapses, when the land falls silent, Nissa is left to face the monsters alone.

Episode 3: The Believers’ Pilgrimage
The only reason Jace is here on Zendikar is to continue where researchers at Sea Gate left off—to discover how the mysterious stone hedrons throughout the plane can be used as a weapon against the Eldrazi. After conferring with the merfolk explorer Jori En, they decide to journey to the Eye of Ugin to complete Jace’s study. On the way, they encounter a group of pilgrims who have an unusual—and deadly—relationship to the Eldrazi.

Episode 4: The Survivors of Sky Rock

Episode 5: Memories of Blood

Episode 6: Nissa's Quest

MTG Puzzle Quest

~
Happy Tuesday MTG peeps,

With Pax Prime (Seattle) coming up this very weekend, Magic: the Gathering fans are chomping at the bit to get their fill of all wondrous things, but first and foremost, sneak peaks at the upcoming MTG sets - namely Battle for Zendikar, with a chance of Commander 2015.

But hold on - beyond the numerous Wizards of the Coast Panels and opportunities to play Magic, there is another exciting thing to look forward to - to be one of the first to play Magic: The Gathering - Puzzle Quest.  If you are unfamiliar with Puzzle Quest, the existing Warlords / Challenge of the Warlords have Players assume the role of a character with various statistics such as combat ability, morale, and magical affinity with combat being conducted entirely via turn-based puzzle action similar to Bejeweled or Zoo Keeper.

The news out today (link, link, link) - D3 Go! and Wizards of the Coast have partnered to create Magic: The Gathering - Puzzle Quest, a mobile game that blends the hypnotic match-3 puzzle elements of the popular Puzzle Quest franchise with the strategic gameplay and expansive lore of the groundbreaking Magic: The Gathering trading card game.

Magic: The Gathering - Puzzle Quest will be available to download for free on the App Store, Google Play and the Amazon Appstore this fall. Fans will have a chance to be among the first to play Magic: The Gathering - Puzzle Quest in the Annex at PAX Prime 2015 in Seattle on August 28-31.

Players will engage in pitched conflicts with rival Planeswalkers and monsters through intense match-3 puzzle battles, earning levels and amassing a collection of powerful creatures, spells and artifacts along the way.

Here is some eye candy in the way of screen shots -

What We're Playing

~
Happy Monday MTG peeps,

We hope all of you have had a most excellent weekend and hopefully a few Magic: the Gathering games in the mix as well.  Our weekend, kicking off at OMG! Games here in Barrie.  The gaming store was packed with most players getting in some standard format action and half that number opting for Commander multi-player.

We can say that, from what we saw, the popular decklist was blue / red Thopter, featuring Ensoul Artifact from M15 and the new Magic Origins Hangarback Walker.  Given the fied, we think that those who were packing Fade into Antiquity or Revoke Existence in their sideboards likely did well against the robot menace.

Anywhoos, let's get onto today's post - just a round-up of what the MTG Realm playgroup has been playing recently -

Hardened Scales
Yep - this thingy is still around.  Featuring Servant of the Scale, Avatar of the Resolute, Hangarback Walker, Managorger Hydra, Abzan Falconer and High Sentinels of Arashin for the creatures.  Non-creature spells are Hardened Scales (of course), Dromoka's Commander, Feat of Resistance, and Inspiring Call.

Green White Enchant
On decklist that is still sitting in a messy pile and not really going anywhere features the 'build around me' card from Magic Origins - Helm of the Gods and Hearald of the Pantheon.  The latest iteration consists of Nyx-Fleece Ram, Oppressive Rays, Suspension Field, Boon Satyr, Banishing Light, Kruphix's Insight, Eidolon of Blossoms, and Sigil of the Empty Throne.  We don't expect this list to go anywhere soon unless someone gets a flash of brilliance to make it work.

Abzan Aggro
Essentially the very same build as what you may be seeing at the Pro Player tables.  Featuring Fleecemane Lion, Hangarback Walker, Anafenza the Foremost, Siege Rhino, Den Protector, Abzan Charm and Dromoka's Command.  This decklist does not make it out to an FNM as we do not have the proper manabase yet (Fetchlands are still a bit pricey).

What are you playing now and how is it doing at your local store ?

Scry Mulligan

~
Happy Thursday MTG peeps,

For those Magic: the Gathering fans who may be unaware, a new mulligan rule was tournament tested during Pro Tour Origins Vancouver. Essentially, the this new rule could be distilled down to "If you mulligan so you have less than 7 cards in your opener, scry 1".  This so-called Vancouver Mulligan was evaluated by the tournament organisers, the DCI Judge folks and Wizards of the Coast, and is now set to be official with the Battle for Zendikar PreRelease.  All we have to say is 'Lo scry mulligan non √® affatto male'.  The anticipated announcement came down today in this mothersite article (linky here).

From MTG Sally's Wiki, here is a very brief history of the mulligan -

The original mulligan rule applied only if a player had an initial hand of seven lands or no lands. He or she would then have the option to reveal his or her hand, shuffle it back into the deck and then draw a new hand of seven cards. Those cards would become his or her opening hand (the process could not be repeated). This was replaced by the current mulligan system called the "Paris" mulligan. The Paris mulligan was named after the second constructed Pro Tour to use this system in April 1997.

With Magic Origins, Wizards of the Coast experimented with a new mulligan rule: any player whose opening hand has fewer cards than his or her starting hand size may scry 1. Pro Tour Magic Origins Vancouver was the only tournament during which the new rule was in effect and subsequently evaluated, and then accepted.  Expect to see this rule fully implemented with the Battle for Zendikar PreRelease Events.

Here is the new official mulligan rule in its entirety:

103.4. Each player draws a number of cards equal to his or her starting hand size, which is normally seven. (Some effects can modify a player's starting hand size.) A player who is dissatisfied with his or her initial hand may take a mulligan. First, the starting player declares whether or not he or she will take a mulligan. Then each other player in turn order does the same. Once each player has made a declaration, all players who decided to take mulligans do so at the same time. To take a mulligan, a player shuffles his or her hand back into his or her library, then draws a new hand of one fewer cards than he or she had before. If a player kept his or her hand of cards, those cards become the player's opening hand, and that player may not take any further mulligans. This process is then repeated until no player takes a mulligan. (Note that if a player's hand size reaches zero cards, that player must keep that hand.) Then, beginning with the starting player and proceeding in turn order, any player whose opening hand has fewer cards than his or her starting hand size may scry 1.
Here is an earlier article called, MULLIGANS, posted in Latest Developments on August 7, 2015 By Sam Stoddard when WotC was first evaluating the new rule -

What we liked: The biggest advantage of this mulligan was that it was meaningful but not too strong. It does a good job, overall, of increasing the chances that you will hit your early land drops, but without being too easy to abuse. A high number of the non-games result from one player stumbling on lands for a turn or two, and this should help greatly with that problem.

Concerns: While we like this mulligan a lot, we haven't yet (at the time of writing) had time to look at how the Pro Tour played out to see if there were any problems. Part of the idea behind using it at a Pro Tour first is that if there is something we missed, or something that is prone to abuse, it will show up there. We will be looking at both how the Pro Tour played out, as well as the reactions from the players regarding the rule. I don't know when we will have a decision based on this, but we hope to have new information fairly soon.

Eldrazi Invasion

~
Happy Wednesday MTG peeps,

As it is Wednesday, we suggest to pop on over to the newest installment of Uncharted Realms on the mothersite.  There you will get to fill your boots with glorious Magic: the Gathering vorthos / storyline and a sense of what the next set, Battle for Zendikar may hold.  Today's short story is from James Wyatt and titled 'Slaughter at the Refuge'.  Here's the very tasty lead-in -

Sea Gate has fallen, joining Sejiri and Bala Ged in annihilation in the wake of the Eldrazi. As the city teetered on the brink of destruction, the Planeswalker Gideon Jura went to find help: a thinker who could help the fleeing scholars of Sea Gate solve the "puzzle of leylines" that could tilt the odds back in the Zendikari's favor. He went to Ravnica and convinced Jace Beleren to return to Zendikar with him.
For Jace, though, extricating himself from the responsibilities of the Guildpact took some time—time that the refugees of Sea Gate did not have.

Great story!  The rest of this post is dedicated to all the epic Battle for Zendikar eye-candy.  Check out the following arts -

Magic: the Gathering - Budget Standard B/G Elves
Sooo … last Friday Night Magic event over at my local store I saw a healthy variety of different standard format decklists / archetypes, but I will say that without a doubt, the most popular build was Black / Green Elves.

Why ?  Because this list is just too damn fun not to play right now, and it is pretty dang aggressive to boot as well.  If you want to jump on the bandwagon and not break your wallet while climbing on board, I suggest that you pop on over to MTG GoldFish and check out this Budget Deck Tech video / article and some matches to see just what a can of whoop-arse this list can be.

Magic: the Gathering - Battle for Zendikar Mechanics
The Battle for Zendikar mechanics / themes we know so far to date, after today’s Duel Decks: Zendikar vs. Eldrazi preview.

Awaken
Awaken is an ability that lets you pay a different cost to animate a land, turning it into a 0/0 and adding +1/+1 counters.

Devoid
A card with this ability has no colour identity, regardless of any mana symbol(s) in its casting cost.

Ingest
Whenever this creature deals combat damage to a player, that player exiles the top card of his or her library.

Landfall
Landfall is an ability word introduced in Zendikar which signals triggered abilities that respond to a Land entering the Battlefield under the control of the player with the Landfall card.

Ally
Ally is a creature class introduced in Zendikar. Allies are people or creatures that have joined together in an association for mutual benefit or to achieve some common purpose. When an ally comes into play it triggers its own ability and the ability of other allies already in play.

Friday MTG Roundup

~
Happy Friday MTG peeps,

We're very much looking forward to heading down to OMG! Games here in Barrie, Ontario later this evening to try out the ever-changing and evolving standard metagame against our most recent version of Blue / Red (Izzet) artifacts (RU-Bots) featuring Hangarback Walker and friends.  Earlier this week, WotC staffer Melissa DeTora had posted a very interesting Standard Hardened Scales decklist that Ken Yukuhiro had used.  We're thinking of having some fun with this list in the next few weeks.

Speaking of Magic: the Gathering FUN(!), you have got to check out this article over at MTG Goldfish, titled  Playtest: Magic Origins Clash Pack + $10 Upgrades by 'SaffronOlive'.

http://www.mtggoldfish.com/articles/playtest-magic-origins-clash-pack-10-upgrades?utm_source=mtgrealm&utm_medium=blog&utm_campaign=oriclashpack

As you may have read our post earlier when the 'Armed' and 'Dangerous' decklists were revealed, we were all goo-goo and over-the-top happy about the value that was packed in here.  Anywhoos, with just a small budget of ten bucks and some creativity, Richard and Seth pack in a whole lotta bang for the buck and now have a decent weapon suitable to take to your local Friday Night Magic event.

Make sure to scroll down and watch the video to see how these new 'n' improved lists battle it out.  Spoiler alert - the game is fairly evening matched for a while but Seth rolls out a victory which I'll put it down to Richards list being a turn or two slower than required going up against Seth's build.
