Gatecrash UltraPro LineUp

~
Happy Thursday MTG peeps,

We know we already fed you a post earlier today (MTG Realm Tumblr Thursday), but we did not want to wait until tomorrow to share this particular Magic: the Gathering news with you - another Gatecrash spoiler.  This time, the Ultra•Pro product lineup to contain and protect your new Gatecrash cards due out in February, 2013.

Thanks to a toy distributor in Australia who may have jumped the gun just a titch early, we have images of all of the ULTRA PRO - Magic: The Gathering Gatecrash products.  No surprises really.  As we expected, the art featured will correspond similarly to what was chosen for Return to Ravnica.  We have the dual land arts featured on the Play mats for the remaining five guilds (Orzhov, Dimir, Gruul, Boros, and Simic) along with the respective Guild Mages featured on the deck boxes and sleeves.  The binder appears to feature Gideon & Aurelia.  If you want to check out larger arts here, look to our previous posts 'Ravnica Art Fight' or 'Ravnica Art Dump'.  Anywhoos - Let's have a looky-loo . . .

Sleeve Protectors - one for each GTC Guild : 80 ct

Side Load Deck Box - one for each GTC Guild : holds 80 sleeved cards

Tumblr Thursday

~
Happy Thursday MTG peeps,

Tonight being Thursday, our local gaming store (OMG! Games), here in Barrie, Ontario is running their regular EDH / commander evening.  We might actually have a slim chance to get out, but only if all the stars align and we get some unfinished work done.  Today over on the mothersite, there was some very decent articles.  Mike Flores addresses some of the top builds in today's Standard constructed while Jacob Van Lumen covered off some of the more prominent decks for Modern format.  If you have some lists you are still working on and need to get a few outstanding card, drop by and see our friends at CCG House who are running some decent Holiday specials.

Anywhoos, onto today's MTG Realm post - it's Tumblr Time!  This is where we pull our posts from our sister site, MTG Realm on Tumblr and give you a fast forward to some the select content we've posted there for the last week.  Let's go . . .

Break ‘n’ Enter & Theft at the Crazy Squirrel Game Store in Fresno, CA.  Windows smashed on Monday (26th) and MTG cards stolen.  Windows smashed AGAIN last night (Wednesday 28th) but the thieves were scarred off by the alarm.  If you know these arse-clowns may be, contact Jennifer at the store.
I’ll post any updates to the story on my website or here on Tumblr.

Magic: the Gathering
We’re looking to build our very first Modern format 60-card pile.  One of the least expensive decks we’ve looked at is Modern Soul Sisters which provides quite a few things we like - white weenies, life gain, and a can of whoopass.  Here’s the deck list we are beginning with.

Very cool - I know MTG packs have been in vending machines in Europe for a while, just glad to start seeing them now in the Colonies.  If this were in my place of work, I would be (A) Broke, and (B) get no work done.

Modern Soul Sisters

~
Happy Wednesday MTG peeps,

There are a lot of formats to our fav game Magic: the Gathering and were are certainly excited to have heard that Modern would be a sanctioned format for Friday Night Magic come January.  Modern has a very deep card pool and this game is certainly not stale with only a few prominent decks claiming top finishes.  We here at MTG Realm want to jump into this format but almost overwhelmed at all the choices to be had.  As a result RetroTech went with an Elf-ball (she loves her Elves) build and yours truly CopySix decided on a Soul Sisters build as we had most of the cards already.  Our latest order arrived fast from MTG Mint Card and we put our strategies to some real game playing tests.

We are still working on a final list for the Modern Soul Sisters but here is where we stand at the moment . . .
20 Plains (boring)
4x Soul Warden
4x Soul's Attendant
3x Serra Ascendant
3x Martyr of Sands
2x Path to Exile
4x Brave the Elements
3x Honor of the Pure
4x Squadron Hawk
4x Ajani's Pridemate
4x Spectral Procession
3x Ranger of Eos
2x Felidar Sovereign

The sideboard (a starting point):

2x Rhox Faithmender
2x Ajani Goldmane
1x Ghostly Prison
2x Mirran Crusader
1x Serra Ascendant
1x Ranger of Eos
2x Grand Abolisher
2x Stony Silence
2x Mark of Asylum
~

Some cards we are still considering for inclusion to mainboard or sideboard -

Suture Priest
Aven Mindcensor
Proclamation of Rebirth
Rune-Tail, Kitsune Ascendant
Chalice of Life / Death
Elixir of Immortality
Figure of Destiny
Journey to Nowhere
Leyline of Sanctity
Rhox Faithmender
Student of Warfare
Emeria, the Sky Ruin
Mistveil Plains
~
Some initial playtest results -
This build delivers huge fun and was very competitive against the Elf build. In each game, Serra Ascendant typically got that upgrade and Ajani's Pridemate was a monster.  Brave the Elements helped win games or save creatures from spot removal and we were very pleased with the performance of Felidar Sovereign as it delivered the alternate win conidtion on more than one occassion.

We want to know - Are you playing Modern and what is your build or strategy ?  Drop us a line in the comment thingy below.

Return to Ravnica Novel

~
Happy Tuesday MTG peeps,

We were planning on posting a few EDH and modern lists but as you have come to expect, we really wanted to have all the physical Magic: the Gathering cards in hand and play out a few games first before posting.  We are just waiting on a few last minute additions we have ordered from MTG Mint Card before we write something up for you.

Anywhoos - chances are you like to read as you are actually reading these words.  Don't worry, we won't tell - we like to read too.  We are most definitely a big fan of MTG flavour and of course, those magic novels.  We were rather happy to hear a while ago that Return to Ravnica would get a novel - well here's the news . . .

 ~
This fall, Magic: The Gathering fans returned to the most revered plane in the Multiverse – Ravnica, a plane covered entirely by city and inhabited by 10 guilds all vying for control.

Ravnica is a plane of intrigue, mystery and few answers; however, Magic fans now have the opportunity to get a glimpse of the fabled plane like never before.  Wizards of the Coast today released Return to Ravnica, The Secretist Part 1, the first of a three part e-book in the form of a novella, written by Doug Beyer, writer and creative designer on the Magic: The Gathering R&D team.

In this first e-book, fans follow Planewalker Jace Beleren as he returns to his adoptive home of Ravnica to find all of the guilds preparing for battle. In his journey, he discovers evidence of disturbing gaps in his memory and a series of assassins on his trail. He also tries to reconnect with an old friend, but when she turns up dead, he ends up embroiled in a mystery that implicates all ten guilds and an ancient secret. While battle rages on across Ravnica, Jace finds himself fighting his own battle, with his own challenges and obstacles.

Return to Ravnica, The Secretist Part 1 is available beginning today in the U.S. and Canada for $1.99 at Amazon / Barnes & Noble / Kobo. A brief description is included below and a sample chapter can be found here

Magic: The Gathering eBooks
Return to Ravnica: The Secretist, Part One

A Planeswalker Novella

Jace Beleren has the power to travel between planes of the Multiverse, but with this gift comes isolation. He is one in a million. He is a planeswalker. And he is on the edge of a mystery that could alter the face of his adopted home—a vast, world-wide city known as Ravnica—forever.

Faced with a magical code that is built into the very foundations of the city-world itself, Jace marches into the numinous depths of Ravnica's underbelly in search of the promise of powerful magic. What he finds is perhaps more burden than boon.

Once buried in past, the code resurfaces as Ravnica's power-hungry mage guilds, unbound by the Guildpact that had once maintained order, struggle for control of the plane. But in the drive for primacy, there is no neutral ground.

Jace knows that he can't crack the code on his own, not while the guilds task teams of mages to unravel the mysteries, but he also knows that the danger of the quest is too great to include his friends. As the mystery begins to unravel, the choice may not be his alone.

Gatecrash Legendaries

~
Happy Monday MTG peeps,

We hope all of our American readers had a great Thanksgiving long weekend and were able to get in some Magic: the Gathering games.  We did not get out to our regular Friday Night Magic Event at OMG! Games here in Barrie, Ontario on Friday but chose rather to take in a movie.  We went to the Uptown Theatre which is actually downtown Barrie and watched the weird but wonderful Cloud Atlas.  The Uptown Theatre is now licensed (for grown-up beverages) and all the old seats replaced by comfy La-Z-Boy recliners.

In MTG related news, we are hard at work tweaking our standard strategies, and developing a new EDH / Commander build as well as getting some last minute additions from MTG Mint Card for a modern deck.  We'll yatter about these things latter but for today, we wanted to cover off the 5 legendary guild leaders expected in the next Return to Ravnica set, Gatecrash.  The guilds are Boros (red / white), Dimir (black / blue), Gruul (Red / Green) Orzhov (black / white) and Simic (blue / green).

This post is meant as more of a review of known flavour on these leaders and the unofficial Gatecrash spoiler of two of the leaders in which to extrapolate and speculate as to what the remaning three Legendary cards may deliver.  Let's go . . .

~

Aurelia: the Belligerence behind the Boros. The current guild leader is Aurelia, a ferocious archangel who ascended through the Boros ranks. After the death of Razia, founder of the Boros, and the disgrace of Feather, the previous angel guildmaster, the warleader Aurelia challenged Feather’s ascendancy. Aurelia argued that a disgraced angel couldn’t command authority or respect, and many agreed. Aurelia quickly shamed into silence those who didn’t support her, and she soon took command of the guild. While Razia was more of a figurehead, aloof and untouchable, Aurelia is an active, forceful leader who is directly involved with her underlings. She has urged the Boros to adopt her impassioned ideals and to take action to enforce them.
~

Lazav, the Dimir Mastermind. Lazav is a shapeshifting mage who serves as the nexus of telepathic impressions of the entire Dimir network. He (or she, or it) shapeshifts into a variety of guises as his needs and plans require; he may step out into the Ravnican streets as an elderly widow to eavesdrop at the bazaar, become a vedalken hussar to sidestep a checkpoint, or transform into a Tin Street merchant to deceive a passing noble. Some Dimir agents believe that Lazav plots against Niv-Mizzet to discern the dragon’s hidden endgame and twist it for his own purposes.
~

Borborygmos, Alpha of the Clans. Though no Gruul clan leader has ever managed to dominate or unify all the clans, one is spoken of in reverential tones: Borborygmos. An unusually massive cyclops and the savage leader of the Burning-Tree Clan, Borborygmos “smashes his enemies into paste, then uses that paste to polish his boots,” as the saying goes. Borborygmos has defended his position as the Gruul’s mightiest clan leader for several decades now and has killed many upstarts. But though he’s still an extraordinary warrior, Borborygmos is beginning to show his age. The challenges to his leadership have become more frequent and his victories more narrow.
~

Obzedat, the Ghost Council. The Orzhov guild is ruled by the Obzedat, a council of ghostly autocrats who have maintained their wealth and power even as they’ve shed their mortal forms. Members of the Obzedat have managed to cheat mortality, maintaining their consciousness (and their greed) beyond the threshold of death. They are paranoid and spiteful dictators, often going out of their way to thwart ambitious underlings, crush rumormongers, and spy on potential enemies. The Obzedat rarely speak directly with those outside the guild; instead they communicate through their official envoy, Teysa Karlov.
~

Prime Speaker Zegana. The regal and reticent merfolk called Zegana is the current guildmaster of the Simic Combine. She is the Speaker for Zonot One, the first of the mysterious sinkholes to emerge on Ravnica, and she delivered the Fathom Edict that declared a new beginning for the Combine. Zegana is quick to point out, however, that she speaks at the discretion of the Speakers’ Chamber, a secretive body of all nine of the zonots’ speakers. She claims that the Chamber can revoke that status, at which time another Speaker would replace her as the guildmaster. Many outside the Simic believe this is false modesty, however, and that Zegana controls the Chamber—if it actually meets at all.

Pit Tales

~
Happy Thursday MTG peeps,
A very Happy Thanksgiving to our American cousins to the south!  May your feasts of avian beasts be a happy one with your friends and family.  Also, we wish you happy hunting during your Black Friday / Cyber Monday retail sales quest.  As for us here at MTG Realm in Canada-Land, we're certain there is still leftover turkey lurking in a dark corner of our freezer but at the moment, the sun is shinning, it's mild and there is no forecast of snow until at least tomorrow.

For today's post, we wanted to take a look at a Magic: the Gathering webcomic produced by non-other than MTG head designer Mark RosewaterTales from the Pit is a Photo Comic written by MaRo and provides a sometimes humorous look at the 9 to 5 life of some of the Wizards of the Coast Magic: the Gathering team.  Specifically, the 'Pit' is the area where the MTG R&D team toils and from what we see from here looks to be a pretty cool space to let your creative side feed into a successful corporate product.

Anywhoos, here are several select installments from MaRo's Tumblr feed -

Gatecrash Spoiler 1

~
Happy Wednesday MTG peeps,

As you know, someone in South Dakota got their paws on some Gatecrash cards - Magic the Gathering cards not to be released for some time.  They then posted them for sale early Saturday morning.  We followed the discussions in forums all weekend long and then decided to post only after StarCity Games posted said cards for sale.  The gneral consensus is that these are real and not clever fakes but as always, we remind you to refer to the Wizards of the Coast website for official previews.  Anywhoos, We had really only posted the story but nothing in the way of a review in Monday's article, which we'll give a run down right now.

First - To give a sense of the community and retailers initial assessment, here's the average pre-order price posted for each Gatecrash card (guildgate cards excepted) :
Aurelia ~ $15
Borborygmos ~ $8
Domri Rade ~ $25
Enter the Infinite ~ $4
Hellkite Tyrant ~ $3
Dual Land ~ $10 to $15

Aurelia, the Warleader, 2rrww
Legendary Creature - Angel, Mythic Rare
Flying, vigilance, haste
Whenever Aurelia, the Warleader attacks for the first time each turn, untap all creatures you control. After this phase, there is an additional combat phase.
3/4

Boros players are certainly salivating here.  For six mana this could win games handily in both limited and constructed.  Remember Finest Hour from Alara Reborn - that was great for the same reasons that Aurelia is great - never underestimate an extra combat step.  We definitely want to build with this, and will likely pick up from MTG Mint Card a set of those Gatecrash Boros shocklands, Sacred Foundry.
~
Borborygmos Enraged, 4rrgg
Legendary Creature - Cyclops, Mythic Rare
Trample
Whenever Borborygmous Enraged deals combat damage to a player, reveal the top three cards of your library. Put all land cards revealed this way into your hand and the rest into your graveyard.
Discard a land card: Borborygmos Enraged deals 3 damage to target creature or player.
7/6

Most decidedly a mythic rare card.  We are loving the abilities and the flavor here.  We think a lot of players may consider this for a General in their EDH / Commander games and as for standard, we would not want to be looking at the business end of this Cyclops.  There's some mulch, some Seismic Assault, and a whole lot of butt-kicking going on here.  Some enterprising gamers may be pairing this with Unburial Rites to cheat fatties in the yard onto the battlefield.
~
Domri Rade, 1rg
Planeswalker - Domri, Mythic Rare
b: Look at the top card of your library. If it's a creature card, you may reveal it and put it into your hand.
-2: Target creature you control fights another target creature.
-7: You get an emblem with "Creatures you control have double strike, trample, hexproof and haste."
3

Yes, we know, the PW art does not break the border but Nissa did not either.  Assuming its real, a 3-loyalty Planeswalker for 3 mana deserves our attention. The first plus ability forces you to place this in a creature heavy deck, but does give you the ability to get additional cards in your hand, which is almost never a bad thing.  The second (negative) fight ability on the second is decent tech for spot removal provided you have a fatty on the game table.  The third (negative) ability providing that emblem is just over the top and we think appropriately not available until at least turn ten.  Going ultimate with Domri is not likely.
~
Enter the Infinite, 8uuuu
Sorcery, Mythic Rare
Draw cards equal to the number of cards in your library, then put a card from your hand on top of your library. You have no maximum hand size until your next turn.

Wicked Terese Nielsen art on this very mana-expensive sorcery.  So what do you get for 12 mana?  Most likely a game won if you are careful.  There is of course a chance you will fail miserably having essentially just milled yourself but with cards like Omniscience, you will likely come out on top.  We would probally cry if we pulled this in a pack.
~
Hellkite Tyrant, 4rr
Creature - Dragon, Mythic Rare
Flying, trample
Whenever Hellkite Tyrant deals combat damage to a player, gain control of all artifacts that player controls.
At the beginning of your upkeep, if you control twenty or more artifacts, you win the game.
6/5

We here are certainly fans of any cards with alternate win conditions.  Six mana still delivers a solid flyer with trample but the other abilities really are not that relevant in standard constructed and would only shine in very few instances perhaps like a sideboard against Modern Affinity type strategies.

Happy Tuesday MTG peeps,

We think its time again to pull into our daily MTG Realm posts, a selection of our odds 'n' ends from our sister site, MTG Realm on Tumblr, which happens to have a fairly healthy gaming community and quite a lot of Magic: the Gathering fans.  In other news, we are planning some purchases right now before the Christmas rush at MTG Mint Card which is running a pretty sweet Thanksgiving / Black Friday sale.  Anywhoos - Let's go . . .

The Craigslist Spoiler

~
Happy Monday MTG peeps,

Something very interesting happened at 3:26 AM, Saturday Morning in the small town of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.  Someone had posted an advertisement titled "Maigc The Gathering 2013 Foil RARES" ('magic' spelled incorrectly) on Craigslist.  In this advertisement for sale was six Magic: the Gathering cards - one a foil and non-foil Jace, Architect of Thought and five other cards, all foils - from a set that had not yet been released.  Specifically - 'Gatecrash', the second set in the Return to Ravnica block, expected to hit shelves in gaming stores 1st February, 2013.

If you are not aware (we're certain most of you are), Craigslist provides local classifieds and forums for jobs, housing, for sale, personals, services, local community, and events - oh and all things sketchy.  The Craigslist poster also posted images of these cards as well.  To say that the gaming community was skeptical is an understatement - to have five big spoilers (all Mythic rare) spoiled this early (the NPH godbook incident excepted), is unheard of.  Having all these cards in foil, even more so.  Forum members everywhere had tried to poke holes in this and still have not yet definitely identified these as fake / counterfeit cards.  The images of these cards are now everywhere (Starcity Games forums, Gathering Magic, and MTG Salvation) and have seeped into almost every social media platform, and still no-one has produced an viable argument against the authenticity of these cards.

Oddly enough, the company which prints cards for Wizards of the Coast does have printing facilities in North Carolina and South Dakota.  It is not out of the realm of possibility that these cards may have originated from the facility but by what means requires further investigation.  We think it unlikely that the Craigslist poster actually knows Magic: the Gathering all that well and may have no idea that his post may now be the focus of an Wizards of the Coast probe.  At the very least, the cards may be seized and charges of theft could be laid.  At the other end of the scale, a legal case for theft of intellectual property may be made.  As of this morning, the Craigslist posting had been deleted by its author.

So, are these fake? Until we know better, we do not think so - in fact StarCity Games have these up on their site for pre-order now.  Here's the obligatory warning - Please treat the following with great suspicion and only refer to the Wizards of the Coast for official previews.
