Commander 2015 Review 3

~
Happy Monday MTG peeps,

MTG Realm is back yet again with another Commander 2015 review.  We have already provided a brief review of the Magic: the Gathering pre-constructed Commander 2015 products for the Black / White 'Call the spirits' deck lead by Daxos the Returned, as well as the 'Wade into Battle' deck lead by Kalemne, Disciple of Iroas.

The Black & Green coloured 'Plunder the Graves' deck has Merren of Clan Nel Toth as the Commander with choices of Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest or the previously printed Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord as your 'back-up' Commander.  This decklist showcases what what Black and Green ('Golgari' colours) do best - graveyard shenanigans and uses just about every vector available to fill up the graveyard.  One can sacrifice creatures to your benefit, whether is is part of a paid cost to an activated ability such as Viridian Zealot or as a by-product of a spell such as Mulch or one of our favourite common card-draw spells, Altar's Reap.

The idea which you will readily appreciate is to fill up that yard rapidly, even with seemingly un-beneficial chump blocks in order to set up the punch line.  Recycle and reuse the fallen with the likes of Wretched Confluence, Rise from the Grave or Meren of Clan Nel Toth herself.  A number of creature cards in this decklist also have rather nice 'enters the battlefield' effects such as Satyr Wayfinder which means it is definitely encouraged to double dip and have it cycle as many times as possible.

The new card, Merren of Clan Nel Toth collects those new experience counters for each time one of your critters bites the dust.  The pay-out here is the ability to be able to retreive a creature in your graveyard equal to or less than the number of experience counters at your end step.

The second legendary creature, Mazirek will garner +1/+1 counters on each creature you control every time a player sacrifices.  Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest is also decent in this list but we would personally consider this a secondary character and not optimal in the current list as its Commander without some modifications first in the theme.  There are almost 20 or so cards with a sacrifice clause in the mix and we would likely want to pump that number up a bit more.

Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord is your third legendary in the list and great support card as well.  Again, we would want to modify the list a titch should we want to have Jarad act as Commander here.  When Jarad was in standand format, we had a definite liking to what this card could do - first and foremost - sacrificing huge critters to kock life off each opponent.  We also liked the power / toughness pump with each critter in your graveyard but often found that we wished Jarad had evasion and would be chump-blocked till the cows came home unless we had a combat trick or spot removal.

All in all, a solid list - our compliments to Wizards of the Coast staffers (Ben Hayes, Dan Emmons, et al.) - love the theme, and the fun factor while playing.

Thalia Tiny Leader

~
Happy Saturday MTG peeps,

As you may know, one member of the MTG Realm playgroup (CopySix) has a serious thingy for all things white weenie, so it comes as little surprise that he has developed a Thalia, Guardian of Thraben Tiny Leader decklist.  It is not entirely tuned / complete but seems to promise fun games.  Strap on in and let's have a look at this particular budget friendly build which should run you about $35 or so.

Taxing non-creature spells an extra 1 colorless is good against the metagame.  Thalia is a Human Soldier and may be a natural fit in a mono-white 'weenie' build featuring mostly creature spells.

Anthem effects to be had with Veteran Armorsmith, Field Marshal, Adaptive Automaton, Veteran Swordsmith, Honor of the Pure, Shared Triumph, Glorious Anthem with pseduo-anthem effect to be had with Accorder Paladin's 'Battle cry' ability.  Additional effect with Mobilization provides your soldiers with vigilance.  Evasion via flying provided by Cavalry Pegasus to all of the 16 or so humans found in the list.

Token Producers : Mobilization, Spirit Bonds and Precinct Captain.

Control / Removal allowance : Bonds of Faith (doubles as an pumped aura), Fiend Hunter and Banisher Priest.

Other notes:
Recursion via Order of Whiteclay
Card draw via Mentor of the Meek
Frontline Medic saves from boardwipes or messes with 'X' spells.
Four pieces of equipment tailored to Humans or Soldiers.

Tiny Leaders - Jenara

~
Happy Monday MTG peeps,

Next weekend at our local gaming store, OMG! Games, here in Barrie, Ontario, they are planning on running the first ever Tiny Leaders event.  We will admit that this made-in-Canada alternate Magic: the Gathering format looks pretty exciting and here at MTG Realm, we definitely want to get in on the action.

First up, we suggest that if you have not yet tried this format, pop on over to the Tiny Leaders site and become familiar with the rules and the suggested ban list.  Essentially, this is a one-on-one singleton format with a total of 50 cards with life totals starting at 25.  All cards including your 'general' or 'commander' must be equal to or under a converted mana cost of three and all cards in your list conforms to the commander's colour identity.

To this end, we put together our very first decklists over the weekend.  Specifically, we had tried out two lists - one featuring Thassa, God of the Sea, and the other Jenara, Asura of War as our very first foray into this format.  Today we want to yatter about that Bant Angel, Jenara.  We chose this one as we have a measure of nostalgia for her.  Giving this spell's ability to put a +1/+1 counter on itself, we went with a related counter theme to focus on.

Jenara, Asura of War, GWU
Legendary Creature - Angel
Flying
1W: Put a +1/+1 counter of Jenara, Asura of War.
3/3

30 Spells / 20 Land
Some lands of note -
• Gavony Township - counter party
• Oran-Rief, the Vastwood

Creatures - 18
• Noble Hierarch - Mana Fix
• Birds of Paradise - Mana Fix
• Experiment One - Evolve / early chump block
• Scute Mob - Late game beater
• Slippery Bogle - not a good fit
• Cloudfin Raptor - Evolve / Flyer
• Sylvan Caryatid - Mana Fix
• Scavenging Ooze - anti-recursion / beater
• Fleecemane Lion - Indestructible defence / beater
• Predator Ooze - Indestructible defence / beater
• Boon Satyr - big pump
• Champion of Lambholt - possible win condition
• Banisher Priest - removal
• Fiend Hunter - removal
• Abzan Falconer - team evasion
• Geist of Saint Traft - not the best fit
• Dauntless Escort - anti-sweeper
• Elusive Krasis - evolve blocker / beater

Spells - 12
• Hardened Scales - counter theme
• Forced Adaptation - counter party
• Path to Exile - removal
• Distortion Strike - two for one unblockable
• Ordeal of Heliod - counters and life gain
• Feat of Resistance - protection / counter
• Cyclonic Rift - sweeper / control
• Reap What is Sown - counter party
• Behemoth Sledge - beat stick
• Ajani, Caller of the Pride - counter / evasion
• Oblivion Ring - removal
• Banishing Light - removal

This list was most definitely fun to play and was a decent first step in trying out the Tiny Leaders format.  We might further develop this decklist as our familiarity with this game evolves.  Our group talked about a number of other possible lists and we are excited to brew up a number of other stacks.

Khans of Tarkir Event Deck

~
Happy Tuesday MTG peeps,

Some news on the mothersite today that some Magic: the Gathering players may be interested to hear - the Khans of Tarkir Event Deck.  The Khans of Tarkir Event Deck gives players an easy way to jump into a Standard tournament, like Friday Night Magic, with a powerful deck and has the following contents:
• Ready-to-play 60-card deck
• 15-card Sideboard
• Spindown life counter
• Strategy insert
• Deck Box

We know quite a few players who pick up the event deck and with only a few minor tweaks (typically just a two or three extra rares from the card shop or online retailer like MTG Mint Card), and then you're good to go.  In fact, our buddy Rick, co-owner at OMG! Games here in Barrie has been using Event Decks at Friday Night Magic Events and we'll freely admit that the decklist kicks butt.

Anywhoos, on to the decklist !

Creature (25)
1 Herald of Anafenza
3 Mardu Hateblade
3 Tormented Hero
1 Bloodsoaked Champion
2 Chief of the Edge
2 Chief of the Scale
2 Seeker of the Way
3 Oreskos Swiftclaw
3 Mardu Skullhunter
1 Pain Seer
1 Mardu Hordechief
1 Herald of Torment
2 Timely Hordemate

Sorcery (1)
1 Rush of Battle

Instant (2)
1 Bile Blight
1 Silence the Believers
Artifact (1)
1 Spear of Heliod

Enchantment (7)
1 Spirit Bonds
2 Banishing Light
2 Raiders' Spoils
1 Dictate of Erebos
1 Dictate of Heliod

Land (24)
1 Caves of Koilos
4 Scoured Barrens
10 Plains
9 Swamp

Sideboard (15)
2 Despise
2 Solemn Offering
3 Glare of Heresy
3 Dark Betrayal
1 Drown in Sorrow
2 Tormod's Crypt
2 Brain Maggot

~
We rather like this list.  In fact, this was not too far removed from one of the first new standard format decks we were going to develop for the next FNM event.  Our only criticism is that out of the 10 rares in here, only 2 are from Khans of Tarkir.  We should have liked a bit more if WotC threw in some of the sweepers like Utter End / End Hostilities or even Grim Haruspex.

FTV Annihilation Decklist

~
Happy Monday MTG peeps,

Today over on the mothersite, WotC staffer Gavin Verhey provided the full decklist from From the Vault: Annihilation.  From the Vault is a series of box sets (a total of seven so far), released on an annual basis in late August. Each box set contains 15 tournament-legal, black-bordered, holographic foil cards with a common theme. A number of of these cards have alternate artwork and are often highly sought-after by Magic: the Gathering players and collectors.

It is expected to have a suggested retail price of $35 but we have serious doubts that many players will be able to pick up this product at that price.  If you already have these singles from an online retailer like MTG Mint Card, then you're good to go, unless that is you are after the alternate art - we might pop over to our local games store, OMG! Games here in Barrie Ontario and hope they've not sold out.  Here's the full 4.1.1. from the official announcement back in February -

Contents and Details
• 15 Premium foil cards, including 6 with new art.
• An exclusive Spindown™ life counter.
• A collector's guide.
• Each card has been printed using a foil process unique to the From the Vault series.
• From the Vault: Annihilation will be available world-wide in English only, and will have an extremely limited print run.
• All cards are black bordered and tournament legal. This means that these cards are legal for use in any tournaments where the original printings are still legal.

Flavour
Harness the savage power of fifteen of the most brutal Magic cards ever unleashed. These limited-edition, black-bordered superweapons are legal in many tournament formats. Sweep the battlefield clean with this powerful arsenal and blast the opposition into oblivion.

~

Modern Event Decklist

~
Happy Tuesday MTG peeps,

For those of you who enjoy Magic: the Gathering Modern format, some good news from the mothersite today - we were provided the decklist to the latest Modern format product - the Modern Event Deck.  Announced way back on January 9th, 2014, this will be hitting a local gaming store near you in just over two weeks from now on May 30th, 2014.

On March 7th, Forum user 'A friend', posted this product packaging image while at a unspecified 'event' which essentially let the cat out of the bag revealing that the four cards mentioned on the product packaging that we were looking at a possible black / white tokens decklist.

On the very same day Aaron Forsythe, Director of R&D at Wizards, had tweeted (@mtgaaron) the following - "Heads up... The picture of the Modern Event Deck floating around is a pre-production mockup and is not completely accurate to what's final."  At this time, a lot of players were clamouring for the inclusion of Bitterblossom which had becomed unbanned in the February 3rd DCI Banned & Restricted List update.  With today's Modern Event Decklist reveal, we now see that the leaked packaging image holds true but no Bitterblossom in the list.  This of course is easily remedied by picking up this card from an online retailer like MTG Mint Card and modifying the decklist with this upgrade.

Anywhoos, let's get into the details -

Deck Design and Deck Development: Ben Hayes
Languages Available: English

MSRP: $74.99

Introducing a new Event Deck tuned to compete in the
high-powered Modern format!
Filled with rare cards from past Magic™ sets, this preconstructed deck, and sideboard, is designed to give players a launching point for participating in Modern events such as Friday Night Magic and Grand Prix Trials.

• 15-card sideboard
• Strategy Guide
• Spindown™ life counter

Here it is - the decklist !
24 land -
2 City of Brass
4 Isolated Chapel
4 Caves of Koilos
1 Vault of the Archangel
4 Windbrisk Heights
5 Plains
4 Swamp

30 other spells -
2 Soul Warden
3 Tidehollow Sculler
5 creatures
1 Sword of Feast and Famine
3 Honor of the Pure
2 Inquisition of Kozilek
4 Intangible Virtue
4 Lingering Souls
3 Path to Exile
4 Raise the Alarm
2 Shrine of Loyal Legions
4 Spectral Procession
3 Zealous Persecution

1 planeswalkers -
1 Elspeth, Knight-Errant

15 sideboard -
2 Burrenton Forge-Tender
3 Duress
3 Relic of Progenitus
3 Kataki, War's Wage
2 Ghost Quarter
2 Dismember

The list looks great.  We're happy with the mana base - Caves of Koilos, City of Brass, Isolated Chapel and definitely Vault of the Archangel.  Windbrisk Heights is a card we would not think of including but we're certainly open to this idea.

Anthem effects via Honor of the Pure and Intangible Virtue is great and we would even consider going a step further with the inclusion of Sorin, Lord of Innistrad for the second ability giving us a permanent emblem.  Lingering Souls, Spectral Procession,  Raise the Alarm and Shrine of Loyal Legions all feed the token generating engine. Good choices for disruption / control / spot removal with Tidehollow Sculler, Inquisition of Kozilek, Zelous Persecution and Path to Exile.

We're not certain about the inclusion of Sword of Feast and Famine here and although we admit it is a powerful card, our play style would want something else (another token generator or anthem).  Kataki, War's Wage is an interesting inclusion in the sideboard and we think this may be a good choice depending upon your local metagame but we would likely replace it with with Oblivion Ring / Banishing Light or perhaps even a board-wiper.

All-in-all, we're impressed.

Post JOU RW Heroics

~
Happy Hump-Day MTG peeps,

As we now have our full book set of 4x Uncommon / Common cards from Journey into Nyx from MTG Mint Card along with a variety of other purchases from our local card shop, we are now under full steam brewing decklists with our lovely new Magic: the Gathering acquisitions.

One of the very first and rather simple / straightforward decklists we've created was Red / White (Boros) Heroics.  This particular strategy employs inexpensive-to-cast early creatures followed up by some instant spells and auras not only to trigger each of the heroic abilities on the creature but to evolve them into serious must-answer threats.  Here's the initial build at the moment -

20 lands (plains, mountains, Sacred Foundry but no Temple of Triump 'scryland' as this slowed the build down a titch)
4x Akroan Crusader
4x Favored Hoplite
4x Satyr Hoplite
4x Nyxborn Rollicker
4x Hero of Iroas
4x Phalanx Leader
3x Akroan Skyguard
2x Launch the Fleet
4x Titan's Strength
4x Madcap Skills
3x Gift of Orhzova

In the sideboard we have the following -
3x Banishing Light,
3x Boros Charm,
3x Gods Willing,
3x Chained to the Rocks, and
3x Skullcrack.

~
We've got to admit that this decklist worked out better than expected and not only was this fun to play but delivered some rather promising results.  If we were to change anything, it would be more Launch the Fleet - dang that card was great in the games it came down.

With a bit more polishing, we think this a relatively inexpensive thing to build and be good enough to provide some decent wins at Friday Night Magic.  If you are looking to play something like this, drop us a line and tell us how it performed for you at your local gaming store.

Jace vs. Vraska Decklist

~
Happy Wednesday MTG peeps,
Last evening, Magic: the Gathering players using the card database Gatherer noted with some interest that the expansion list was updated to include all cards for the latest Duel Decks: Jace vs. Vraska.  Jace vs. Vraska pits the ever ubiquitous Jace, a specialist in illusion magic, mind reading, and memory modification, against the mysterious gorgon Vraska, Ravnica’s master assassin.

If you are new to the game, Duel Decks are a series of themed decks that first saw print in 2007 with Elves vs. Goblins. These special sets contain two 60-card decks and are specifically designed to be played against each other by two people.

As expected, WotC staffer Mike McArtor prosted the decklists for Duel Decks: Jace vs. Vraska on the motheriste today.  Here's the lists now -

The Duel Decks: Jace vs. Vraska box set contains ten rare cards and two mythic rare cards, the headliners for this product: foil alternate art versions of Jace, Architect of Thought and Vraska the Unseen.  Here are the rares / mythic rares for this Duel Deck as well as handy images for the six alternate arts featured.  (We're especially happy with the new Body Double Art!)

Jace, Architect of Thought, Aeon Chronicler, Body Double, Jace's Mindseeker, Future Sight, Spelltwine

Vraska the Unseen, Ohran Viper, Reaper of the Wilds, Spawnwrithe, Vinelasher Kudzu, Underworld Connections

For a manufacturer's suggested retail price of $20, here's what you get -
• 2 ready-to-play 60-card decks
• 2 deck boxes
• 3 creature tokens
• 1 strategy insert
• 1 learn-to-play guide

Collectors ignoring the fun game aspect of this will likely rip boxes to dig out the popular higher value cards - essentially Remand and the two 'Walkers, Jace and Vraska.  Given this, expect the sealed product to retail in your local gaming store for $30 to $35.  Here at MTG Realm, our only criticism is that there is no Abrupt Decay in Vraska's list.  We suggest that you pick up an Abrupt Decay at MTG Mint Card and replace one of the rares.  Let's roll the product 4.1.1. and a list of the current and previous Duel Deck products -

Born of the Gods Event Deck

~
Happy Thursday MTG peeps,

Born of the Gods, the newest Magic: the Gathering set will be officially released tomorrow during Friday Night Magic events taking place world wide.  Some local gaming stores like OMG! Games here in Barrie, like many other stores will be open at midnight for players who want to get their paws on singles and sealed product.  We'll be there at the stroke of midnight to pick up a Born of the Gods Fat Pack, a few booster packs and perhaps a few singles so we can get some of the new cards in our decklist for FNM.

One sealed product you cannot purchase just yet is the Born of the Gods Event deck. An event deck is a tournament-level deck that contains more competitive cards than their intro deck counterparts. Event decks contain 10 rares and multiple playsets of cards, where intro decks contain two rares, more 1’s and 2-ofs, and two sealed booster packs.  The new BNG Event Deck releases February 28, 2014.  For a MRSP $25, here’s what you get -

• 1 60-card deck
• 1 15-card sideboard
• 1 Spindown life counter
• 1 strategy insert
• 1 card box

~
Over on the mothersite today, we were furnished with the decklist.  Here's the 4.1.1. from WotC -

The "Underworld Herald" deck combines aggressive swarms of creatures with devastating spells that destroy your opponent’s forces. Enchantment creatures and powerful devotion creatures give you a solid backup plan if your initial offensive can’t finish things off.

This deck features a mix of aggressive mechanics. Unleash lets you choose to have your creature enter the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter at the cost of not being able to block. Bestow lets you cast some of your creatures as Auras that turn into creatures if the target they are enchanting is removed. This gives you resilience against opponents who can kill your creatures. Abilities that count your devotion to black get more powerful based on the number of black mana symbols among the mana costs of permanents you control, including hybrid mana symbols like the one on Rakdos Cackler—perfect for a deck with only black cards.

24 lands : 24  Swamp

26 creatures : 1  Agent of the Fates, 1  Blood Scrivener, 1  Crypt Ghast, 1  Desecration Demon, 1  Erebos's Emissary, 1  Herald of Torment, 3  Mogis's Marauder, 1  Pack Rat, 4  Rakdos Cackler, 4  Rakdos Shred-Freak, 3  Spiteful Returned, 3  Tormented Hero, 2  Xathrid Necromancer

10 other spells : 2  Bile Blight, 3  Doom Blade, 1  Fated Return, 1  Gift of Orzhova, 1  Hero's Downfall, 2  Ultimate Price

15 sideboard cards : 3  Cremate, 2  Dark Betrayal, 4  Duress, 2  Gift of Orzhova, 2  Pharika's Cure, 2  Staff of the Death Magus

~
What do we think?  We can't say we really care for this list.  So many odd 'one of's' wuch as Blood Scrivener, Crypt Ghast, Agent of the Fates, etc. to feed into a focused strategy.  The appearance of Staff of the Death Magus is simply weird.

Having said that, we do think that one could simply use this list as a foundation and pick up singles from MTG Mint Card to make it rock.   We also do think that the list does deliver very good value.  There is approximately $60 or so bucks after tallying up the singles and not matter what you may think of this mono-black list, you'll be getting solid cards which can be ripped into another decklist you have or as mentioned modify the existing list to make it competitive in your local meta-game.

Drop by the WotC  sample hand generator here to get a feel for it.

Walter's Whities

~
Happy Tuesday MTG peeps,
Since Theros came to stay, we here at MTG Realm, although very impressed with the wonderful choices of Magic: the Gathering builds and strategies were not quite 'passionate' (for lack of a better word at the moment) about any of the new offerings.  Since Innistrad block rotated out with Lingering Souls and friends, we've been sort of spinning our wheels and have even decided to eschew standard format in favour of Modern.  That may change now with a particular White / black build that Dennis Bogdanov has been playing.

We first heard about Bogdanov's build from Craig Wescoe, a player after our own heart, after last month's TCG Player Open in Columbus.  Perhaps we were not fully caffeinated at the time of reading Craig's article and we did not really grasp what was cooking in the kitchen with this White / black devotion.  Anywhoos - fast forward to today and LSV's post to the daily deck list on the mothersite - low 'n' behold - Bogdnov's list again for the GPT Albuquerque.  The list is TIGHT! This is most certainly a build we can get behind.

One drops include full book sets of Soldier of the Pantheon, and Brave the Elements.  There is Imposing Sovereign and then Precint Captain which fills the two-drop slot - the Captain not only is robust against other two drops with first strike but can drop tokens regularly.  Spear of Heliod,  Boros Reckoner, Banisher Priest, and Ajani, Caller of the Pride occupy the three slot and present options for control and aggro.  In the four drop slot, we have pairs of both Gideon, Champion of Justice and Heliod, God of the Sun which offer resiliency against control and a number of other mid-range options.  We kinda giggled when we first imagined an animated indestructible Gideon getting evasion and double strike with Ajani.  Wrapping everything up is a deckset of Blood Baron at five mana, a pair of Elspeth, Sun's Champion at six and Angel of Serenity at seven mana.

In the sideboard Thoughseize and Orzhov Charm are suggested along with the typical choices one can expect against the metagame.  We'll collect just a handful of MTG singles from MTG Mint Card and we have everything set to go at the next Friday Night Magic event.

24 land : 4 Godless Shrine, 4 Temple of Silence, 4 Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, 12 Plains

23 creatures : 4 Blood Baron of Vizkopa, 4 Precinct Captain, 3 Imposing Sovereign, 4 Boros Reckoner
4 Soldier of the Pantheon, 2 Angel of Serenity, 2 Heliod, God of the Sun

7 other spells : 4 Brave the Elements, 3 Spear of Heliod

6 planeswalkers : 2 Ajani, Caller of the Pride, 2 Elspeth, Sun's Champion, 2 Gideon, Champion of Justice

11 sideboard (?): 2 Thoughtseize, 2 Orzhov Charm, 2 Fiendslayer Paladin, 2 Celestial Flare, 1 Rootborn Defenses, 2 Glare of Heresy

Theros Event Decklists

~
Happy Thursday MTG peeps,

We simply cannot wait until our MTG Mint Card pre-orders are shipped so we can start brewing up builds and start gaming at OMG! Games (Barrie, Ontario) Friday Night Magic events.  For this particular Friday, we'll likely stick to a Return to Ravnica block deck with a few singletons of Theros we've picked up from the PreRelease event.

Speaking of events, Theros Game Day is scheduled for the weekend of October 19th / 20th and the Theros Event Deck will be going on sale that Friday giving gamers an opportunity to take it for a spin.   Unlike the preconstructed Intro Decks, which Wizards of the Coast develops with newer players to Magic in mind, event decks are built with with a focus given to tournament-play competitive players.  We now have the final decklist today over on the mothersite, so let's have a look.

Anywhoos, for an MRSP of approximately $25 (depending upon where you may be), here's what you get . . .
• 1 x 60-card deck
• 1 x 15-card sideboard
• 1 x Spindown   life counter
• 1 x strategy insert
• 1 x card box

Theros Event Deck - 'Inspiring Heroics' (U/W)
