Commander 2014 New Arts

~
Happy Wednesday MTG peeps,

Magic: the Gathering players love getting new cards and here at MTG Realm, we had ordered a bunch of Commander 2014 singles from MTG Mint Card even though we actually owned a one or two of the reprints.  Why? - because we also love getting updated card illustrations.  You may recall from previous posts that we'll sometimes play a card with an epic art even though the spell itself might be janky.  Well all the Commander 2014 cards granted new illustrations are far from janky and they all have absolutely lovely art.  Here's the breakdown with some images borrowed from 'Original Magic Art', who has a great poll to register your personal proclivity for the classic art or new hotness.

Tumblr Tuesday

~
Happy Tuesday MTG peeps,

The overarching theme this last weekend for Magic: the Gathering fans at least in our corner of Canada was Commander 2014.  It appeared that more gamers were picking up the full (all five boxes) of C14 than we recall last year.  There was a lot of excitement at our local card shop, OMG! Games here in Barrie and we were happy that locally, the big box stores did not appear to yet have them on shelves which equates to a healthier / happier brick 'n' mortar WPN retailer.

For today, we wanted to wish everyone a safe / reflective Vetran's Day (south of the border) or Remembrance Day here in Canada-Land.  As for today's post, we are visiting our sister site MTG Realm on Tumblr to see what those scamps have been up to lately.

Commander 2014 Release

~
Happy Wednesday MTG peeps,

With Commander 2014 being released this Friday 7th November and Magic: the Gathering fans converging on their local gaming stores (we'll be heading to OMG! Games here in Barrie, Ontario), we here at MTG Realm wanted to give another brief high level overview of this set.  Below are excerpts from the DCI Commander 2014 Edition Release Notes as well as details from MTG Salvation Wiki for your reference.

Commander 2014 features five mono-coloured 100-card decks with a total of 337 different cards and 61 new cards.  The set introduced five Planeswalkers that can be used as a commander and featured legendary creatures from Magic's past.  The five decks are as follows -

FORGED IN STONE
Nahiri, the Lithomancer knows that victory comes from having the right weapons. This Planeswalker commander is a master of arms who creates powerful equipment and enchantments to prepare massive armies for the fight.

PEER THROUGH TIME
Teferi, Temporal Archmage manipulates time itself. This Planeswalker commander uses an arsenal of tricks to keep his options open and his opponents guessing until he can send forth massive blue creatures to deliver the final blow.

SWORN TO DARKNESS
Ob Nixilis of the Black Oath is a ruthless tyrant who will stop at nothing to achieve his aims. This Planeswalker commander saps his opponents’ strength, summons powerful demons to the battlefield, and compels the dead to rise and fight.

BUILT FROM SCRATCH
Daretti, Scrap Savant brags that he can build anything out of anything. This Planeswalker commander is a master artificer. He sacrifices trinkets to bring back treasures and cobbles together an army of automatons to crush the opposition.

GUIDED BY NATURE
Freyalise, Llanowar’s Fury protects the forest and the elves who dwell there, and they protect her in return. This Planeswalker commander summons loyal elves to her side and unleashes the full might of the natural world upon her enemies.

New Ability Word: Lieutenant
Lieutenant is an ability word that appears in italics on a cycle of creatures that become more powerful if you control your commander. (An ability word has no rules meaning.)
* Lieutenant abilities apply only if your commander is on the battlefield and under your control.
* Lieutenant abilities refer only to whether you control your commander, not any other player’s commander.
* If you gain control of a creature with a lieutenant ability owned by another player, that ability will check to see if you control your commander and will apply if you do. It won’t check whether its owner controls his or her commander.
* If you lose control of your commander, lieutenant abilities of creatures you control will immediately stop applying. If this causes a creature’s toughness to become less than or equal to the amount of damage marked on it, the creature will be destroyed.
* If a triggered ability granted by a lieutenant ability triggers, and in response to that trigger you lose control of your commander (causing the lieutenant to lose that ability), that triggered ability will still resolve.

Cycle: Offerings
The Offerings are a cycle of cards that have two beneficial effects. For each, you and an opponent of your choice are rewarded.
* You may choose the same opponent for each of the effects, or you may choose different opponents. None of the affected players are targets of the spell.
* For each of the Offerings except Volcanic Offering (see its entry in the Card-Specific Notes section), you choose the opponents for each effect as the spell resolves.

Commander 2014 has ten cycles:

Commander 2014 Tokens

~
Happy Tuesday MTG peeps,

The very next Commander set - Commander 2014 is ready to be released this Friday, 7th November 2014 and we are definitely pumped.  Magic: the Gathering players who enjoy this format will be certainly pleased with a nod to past reprints and we have to admit to a bit of nostalgia seeing some of the older cards.  But it is not just reprints - there are 61 new, never seen before cards which is sure to rock your game table.  Most notable is the printing of a cycle of special Planeswalkers which may now act as your commander and are featured in each of the five coloured decks.  Our group is planning on purchasing at least two decks and getting a bunch of singles from MTG Mint Card.

The topic today of course are the tokens which are included in the Commander 2014 product.  In fact, there is a whopping 36 different tokens and emblems to be had in C14 and if you know us here at MTG Realm, we've got a thingy for tokens.  We follow a fella named Andrew who runs a Tumblr Blog called Sarpadian Empires Vol. VIII, who did a great job organising all the tokens 'n' emblems from the two preview posts on the mothersite (here and here).

He had these notes -
Tokens and emblems of Commander (2014 Edition), organized by the color of the card that creates them (and then by size). This is an awesome suite of extra goodies we get!
EDIT: And I just realized that, by my own rule, the Goat token should be at the end since it’s made by an artifact. But it’s too late now I guess. Good for you, Goat, leading the pack.

Commander Spoilers 10-29

~
Happy Wednesday MTG peeps,

We are definitely digg'n all the new Commander 2014 previews so far and are pretty much right beside ourselves with only one more Planeswalker Commander to be revealed.  We've got a few theories about the white Commander in this Magic: the Gathering set - all revolving around a certain Lithomancer (a wizard who can manipulate stone / gems).

EDIT - Apparently we now have exactly what we've hoped for - the Lithomancer herself.  Not quite as 'strong' as we were hoping for but we will not complain too loudly.
We're pretty much certain we'll be picking up both the green (for Rtech) as well as the white (for me) C14 products  from our local gaming store OMG! Games and then getting a haul of singles from MTG Mint Card (for RStomp).

Anywhoos - look for all of today's Commander 2014 spoilers and previews to be updated here -
