Return to Ravnica Promos

Happy Tuesday MTG peeps,

Today on the mothersite, all the Return to Ravnica promos had been unveiled by WoTC Monty.  All of these promos feature very slick alternate art and we say highly collectible as they would look absolutely lovely in any deck whether you are playing standard, modern, EDH / Commander or rocking the kitchen table with some casual Magic the Gathering games.  If you are looking for regular art Return to Ravnica foils or other sets, swing by MTG Mint Card.

Anywhoos - here's the looky-loo at all the Return to Ravnica promos . . .

New Phyrexia PreRelease Promo

~
Happy Thursday MTG peeps,

Following up on yesterday's massive New Phyrexia card art post, we now have for you what is rumoured to be the PreRelease Promo card. Again, we note to you that all should be considered hearsay until officially previewed on the Wizards of the Coast mothership.

Posted to the forums, this appears to be snapped from a pre-release poster somewhere in the land of the rising sun. Translations from Japanese should be considered imprecise.

Sheoldred, Whispering One 5

Legendary Creature - Praetor (?)

Swampwalk
At the beginning of your upkeep, return target creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield.

At the beginning of each opponent's upkeep, that player sacrifices a creature.

6/6

We're not sure if one would want to find this is the rare slot during a limited sealed pool event or even would want to considered this for inclusion in a standard deck - but - this card does hold interest for the Commander (EDH) players.

Once in play, this legendary Praetor promises to mess up your opponent's game in a significant way. Essentially, the creature race will be won by the card's controller with an additional creature recurred from your graveyard while and additional creature on your opponent's side of the game table will take a dirt nap. Coupled with Bonehoard (equipment where creature gets +X/+X, where X is the number of creature cards in all graveyards) seems good. Gruesome Encore allows another kick at your opponent with their dead creature as well as Liliana Vess' -8 ability to puke everything out of their graveyard right back onto your side of the table for the wpic win.

We think it a safe bet to expect a full cycle of all the legendary Praetors - Elesh Norn (White), Jin-Gitaxias, Augur of the Core (Blue), Sheoldred, Whispering One (Black), Urabrask the Hidden (Red) and Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger (Green).

Battle Cry

~
Happy Monday MTG peeps,

We sincerely hope everyone of you out there had a pleasant Christmas holiday and perhaps even that foil Jace, the Mind Sculptor under the tree / in your stocking you were pining about for the last few months. We got some coal, but hey, we can chuck it in the fireplace and cook some meat with it.

Anywhoos, we wanted to get another Mirrodin Besieged spoiler out to you today. You may recall our post on the 24th showing the store poster and the Mirrodin Besieged pre-release / release promos - well we now have the full spoiler out on Hero of Bladehold (Mirran faction promo) which was one of the two Pre-Release promos shown on the poster but sadly partially hidden behind Glissa, The Traitor (Phyrexian faction promo).

Say hello to this new sexy card which promises to make a nice splash on the game table . .

Hero of Bladehold, 2

Creature - Human Knight, Mythic Rare

Battle Cry (Whenever this creature attacks, each other attacking creature gets +1/+0 until end of turn.)

Whenever Hero of Bladehold attacks, put two 1/1 white soldier creature tokens onto the battlefield tapped and attacking.

3/4
~

First off a 3/4 for 4 mana is meh . . . but wait ! It is out of bolt range, it is a Knight (Exemplar Knight says hi), and it has two very excellent abilities. The first one has the new keyword mechanic, Battle Cry which we will get to in a moment. The second ability churns out two 1/1 soldier chumps which is decent in any token generating build, which do have haste and will benefit from the Battle Cry tech.

This card is an odd marriage of a play off exalted and one of my fav Lorwyn cards, Militia's Pride. What one can really hope for is some way to provide the Hero with haste or have have multiple creatures / spells which provide Battle Cry for a really big swing. We're not altogether sold that this should be at mythic rarity but will not pass judgment until we see the rest of the new set in context.

~
Also -
It appears that players are starting to get their very last MPR (Magic Player Rewards) mail outs just now. You can expect some nice looking cards such as alternate art Treasure Hunt and Searing Blaze. Depending upon your points, you may also score a foil Day of Judgment as well. Included in the mix is the oversized
Glissa, The Traitor from Mirrodin Besieged which has the requisite announcement for the new set.

Pipe in and drop us a comment - tell us what you think of Hero, Battle Cry or tell us what Wizards sent ya.

One last word . .

MTG Mint Card just put up their page for Mirrodin Besieged singles. So far there is just the four we have all seen before but keep your eye on this as more cards are loaded up for pre-orders which will ship out February 4th.

MTG PreRelease Promos

~
Good Day folks and Happy Tuesday,

We had a blast during the Scars of Mirrodin pre-release last weekend (see our last post for the video and details) and are looking forward to the official launch this weekend. In the meantime however, we are drooling over the lovely foil prerelease promo, Wurmcoil Engine.

This does give us pause to think about recent release and prerelease promos . . . we think that these have generally been improving - getting better cards over the last few sets. To this end let's have a quick look.

First off - if you have never been to a prerelease or release event, promotional cards are provided to players participating at sanctioned prerelease tournaments. These were first introduced way back for theTempest prerelease in October, 1997. Prerelase cards are typically marked with the prerelease date to identify them as the prerelease card. Starting with Onslaught the prerelease cards bear their expansion symbol as a watermark.

Alara Reborn Dragon Broodmother 25-Apr-09
Magic 2010 Vampire Nocturnus 11-Jul-09
Zendikar Rampaging Baloths
26-Sep-09
Worldwake Comet Storm 30-Jan-10
Rise of the Eldrazi Emrakul, the Aeons Torn 17-Apr-10
Magic 2011 Sun Titan 10-Jul-10

A quick comparison of prices - courtesy of MTG Mint Card which we will consider a very decent benchmark.
Wurmcoil Engine / Sun Titan / Comet Storm

As you can see, if we use the metric of singles prices, the promo cards obtained at the prerelease are pretty decent.

On top of this, we are also impressed with the tip-top alternate art we are seeing with the newer promo cards - just fantastic / beautiful. A good example - check out the upcoming Scars of Mirrodin release promo, Steel Hellkite (Japanese source - we've been unable to get an image of an English card yet).

Finally, here's an image we took at last week's prerelease - the back of a tips-and-trick card featuring art from the next upcoming set, Mirrodin Besieged, due in early February, 2011.

Scars of Mirrodin PreRelease Promo

~
Yet another Scars of Mirrodin spoiler today from Japan . . .

This time it is reported to be the Scars of Mirrodin PreRelease promo card - Wurmcoil Engine. Original source is here which was apparently taken from the Scars of Mirrodin Launch Party poster directed to Saitama, Koshigaya City, just a bit north of Tokyo, Japan.

Again, this is not official - the language translation may be a bit off or it may be a complete fake but let's have a look . . .

Original -

6/6

And . .

here is what the translation is thought to be . . .

Wurmcoil Engine, 6
Artifact Creature-Wurm, Mythic Rare
deathtouch, lifelink
when
Wurmcoil Engine is put into the graveyard from play, put a 3/3 artifact wurm token with deathtouch, and a 3/3 artifact wurm token with lifelink into play.
6/6

Wow -
Six colourless mana delivers a truck-load of card awesomeness here and will likely give the M11 Titans a whole lot of trouble when this gets dropped on the game table. There is some confusion just at the moment whether it is a "and" or an "or". This could mean that you could get two 3/3 tokens (a life-linker and one with deathtouch) or just one of your choosing - however it plays it, this will be something rather powerful. Paying six mana for 9 or 12 power on the battlefield certainly will get attention.

Looks like artifacts are gonna rock in Scars of Mirrodin - start planning now.
