Legendary Alara

~
On Wednesday, my buddy Norm over at Casual Magic gave a great tour of the Alara Heraldic cycle of fetch creatures. Today, we hope to shine some light on the Shards of Alara Legendary Creatures which are all MythicRares.

Legendary cards in "Magic The Gathering" can be of any type and represent a legendary figure or artifact. If two or more legendary permanents with the same name are in play, all are put into their owners’ graveyards. Most legendary cards are creatures but legendary artifacts, lands and enchantments also exist.

Kresh the Bloodbraided, 2{B}{R}{G}
Legendary Creature - Human Warrior, 3/3 Whenever another creature is put into a graveyard from play, you may put X +1/+1 counters on Kresh the Bloodbraided, where X is that creature's power.

Frankly Mr. Kresh scares me . . . he promises to go nuclear unless he gets removed. Don't forget that you may want to sac some of your owncritters as well to pump this guy up. You may also want to give him some trample goodness with the likes of Savage Hunger, Mosstodon or another card.

Mayael the Anima, {R}{G}{W}
Legendary Creature - Elf Shaman, 2/3 3{R}{G}{W}, {Tap}: Reveal the top five cards of your library. You may put a creature card with power 5 or greater from among them into play.

Then put the rest of the cards revealed this way on the bottom of your library in any order. I'm not too pleased with the activation cost however -a bit steep. Having said this, if you can get an expensive (>6 mana) fatty out on the cheap then why not. A great card to have out on the table when Mayael hits is Where Ancients Tread which tims for 5 whenever a critter packing a power of 5 or greater comes into play under your control.

Rafiq of the Many, 1{G}{W}{U}
Legendary Creature - Human Knight 3/3 Exalted (Whenever a creature you control attacks alone, that creature gets +1/+1 until end of turn.) Whenever a creature you control attacks alone, it gains double strike until end of turn.

This is certainly one Legendary you may wish to include in an exalted deck as he would swing for 8 points. This would also be fun if you would be able to get a single pumped up exalted attacker with trample from Bant Battlemage to leftover damage off to your opponent. You could also have Rafiq drop 8 points of flying from Stoic Angel.

Sedris, the Traitor King, 3{U}{B}{R}
Legendary Creature - Zombie Warrior, 5/5 Each creature card in your graveyard has unearth 2{B}.

First off, I should think that you would want to be sure that a the recently departed card of your necro-affection is actually worth the 2{B} unearth cost. If you were able to pull out a fatty that's taking a dirt nap, then you certainly would want Sedris onboard. The casting cost for Sedris seems just a bit high however (don't tell him I said so please).

Sharuum the Hegemon, 3{W}{U}{B}
Legendary Artifact Creature - Sphinx, 5/5
Flying
When Sharuum the Hegemon comes into play, return target artifact card from your graveyard to play.

This is so very anti-climatic. I think that Waldorf and Stadler would have some not-so-pleasant things to say about Sharuum. I guess that a six-drop for a 5/5 flyer is decent but would have liked to have seen something with a bit more cow-bell for the ability. Perhaps if the planets were to align and you were able to pull out a fat artifact like Sphinx Sovereign this would make you smile and your opponent cry.

Stay tuned for more MTG and Alara goodness . . .
