Action Packed

~
Happy Tuesday MTG peeps,

WoTC Monty previewed some very interesting Magic the Gathering product mock-ups today on Magic Arcana. Fans of the game were shown Intro Pack, Booster pack and Fat pack packaging images for the upcoming set code-named 'Action' due to released 13th May, 2011.

The Wizards marketing folks are still being very secretive as to whether the 3rd and final set in the Scars of Mirrodin block with be either Mirrodin Pure or New Phyrexia and following through with this line of strategy have provided images for both products.

Let's have a look . . .

Featured prominently on the Mirrodin Pure is the card art for what is speculated to be Darksteel Angel. This, as well as the other arts featured on the packaging are most likely to find their ways onto cards but most players speculate that Mirrodin Pure will never happen. Some supporters of this theory point out the Mirrodin Pure product mock-up of the Intro Pack display box confirm this as it is improperly coloured - there are four u/g packs where there should be an equal representation of the five different Intro Packs.

As for the New Phyrexia packaging images, we've seen that Phyrexian art before featured on the Intro Pack display as well as the Booster Box. The art on the Fat Pack is definitely kicking it for us. We're imaging some more evil and sinister version of Wurmcoil Engine with this illustration. Booster pack images show Suture Priest and two other unknown images. The Intro Pack display shows correct colour distribution of two of each of the five different Intro Packs.

Action Sales Solicitation

~
Happy Monday MTG peeps,

We hope to get to our post of the Mirrodin Besieged Pre-Release we took in at OMG Games yesterday (Sunday) perhaps tomorrow. We did show up on Saturday around 10 minutes after registration opened and they had already filled their capacity of 64 players - one of the best turn-outs we can remember. Sunday was a solid showing as well with around 24 players but we failed rather miserably with building our sealed pooled which resulted in a draw, loss and loss before dropping to go home and admire our new card goodness.

Anywhoos - today's post -

Late last week, Wizards posted their sales solicitation flyer for the third set in the Scars of Mirrodin block, code-named 'Action' scheduled to be released May 13, 2011. Action will be properly named 'Mirrodin Pure' or 'New Phyrexia' and will only be revealed at the last moment and will reveal whether the Mirrans or Phyrexians are victorious in the battle for the plane of Mirrodin. This set will contain 175 cards and the tagline for the set is either "The Sharpest Steel is Tempered in Fire" (Mirrodin Pure) or "The Grand Compleation is Achieved" (New Phyrexia), and the expansion symbol will match the respective Mirran or Phyrexian watermarks found on nearly all non-land cards from Scars of Mirrodin and Mirrodin Besieged.

Returning with “Action” are Event Decks. These 60-card decks come with a 15-card sideboard and are intended for use in Standard play tournaments like Friday Night Magic or Game Day. They also come with a Spindown life counter and a reusable card box. Also, with the release of “Action” Wizards will return to five versions of the Intro Packs as opposed to the four versions in Mirrodin Besieged.

Mirrodin or Phyrexia

~
Happy Thursday MTG fans,

Today on Magic Arcana, Monty dropped quite the announcement . . it was a revelation about the third set in the Scars of Mirrodin block which has players everywhere speculating. The first set in this block was of course Scars of Mirrodin, followed by Mirrodin Besieged (to be released on February 4th, 2011) and finally the third set, code named 'Action' to be released on 13th May, 2011 with 175 cards.

The bomb announced today that the third set will be called either Mirrodin Pure OR New Phyrexia. Which ever it will be, we are certain there is good gaming ahead. As there is still a war on-going on the plane of Mirrodin, Wizards has not yet announced which side will be victorious yet which is really good marketing in our opinion. Speculation is now rampant with some conjecturing that there may be two 'mini-sets' to two different sets already developed simply awaiting player feedback to decide. Furthermore, Wizards injected a dose of obfuscation by trade marking both names - very smart indeed. To check out the formal announcement on the mothership, click here.

Some thinking (or blogging) out loud . . .

Scars of Mirrodin delivered 249 cards of which there were 184 Mirran aligned cards and 41 Phyrexian aligned cards. Some popular speculation on the forums indicate a relatively even split of the two factions in Mirrodin Besieged set of 155 cards in order to set up the 'coin flip' in the last set. This may mean that in Mirrodin Besieged we might see about 143 Phyrexian cards and 32 Mirran cards. Having said that, we're rather glad to have out deckset of Putrefax and Hands of the Praetors.

Something also to note is the two new Mirrodin Pure / New Phyrexia arts spoiled / previewed. Some players believe we may expect new versions of Platinum Angel (fabricated with the indestructible darksteel) and alien-esque Phyrexian Negator.

M11 Combos & Syns

~
Good Day MTG Peeps,

We are certain that you, like us, are evaluating the new Magic 2011 cards for inclusion into your existing casual decks or developing an entire new deck. Following are some combos and synergies you may consider to help pimp your game. Remember that M11 cards become legal to play tomorrow (7/16/2010) so expect to see some of these at your local Friday Night Magic get-together. Also consider that M10 rotates out of standard with Shards of Alara block this fall, so you have approximately 3 months of overlap with M10 and M11 which may spell some very interesting changes with your local metagame.

Righto - onto some card pairings . . . Please suggest your own in the comment form below.

Voltaic Key + Sorcerer's Strongbox or XElixir of ImmortalityX (We're retarded - thanks for the correction JC!) or Crystal Ball (etc.)

Some others to consider . . .

Prodigal Pyromancer + Chandra's Spitfire

Reassembling Skeleton + Bloodthrone Vampire

Triskelion + Primal Cocoon or Chandra's Spitfire

Alluring siren + Wall of Frost

Since we have now moved past the M11 spoiler season, many eyes are now turning toward the distant horizon (October) and scanning what new cardboard to expect. We know that 'Scars of Mirrodin' is the first set in the block which suggests an artifact theme. We also now can speculate on the names of the remaining two sets in this block.
Trademarks filed by Wizards of the Coast with the US Patent and Trademark Office suggest that the set codenames “Lights, Camera, Action” will be 'Scars of Mirrodin (confirmed), New Phyrexia, and Mirrodin Pure'.

We will be vigilent in the coming months to bring you the latest scoop.
