AVR Deck Ideas

~
Happy Wednesday MTG peeps,

The Avacyn Restored PreRelease is over and come this weekend, this newest set is to be properly released to eager Magic the Gathering gamers everywhere.  We  have a good idea from the prerelease as to what new cards rocked limited format but many eyes are now fixed to this Friday and what will be a force in standard constructed.

Most players will already have an idea as to what new builds to bring along to Friday Night Magic events or what existing builds will be tweaked with the new Avacyn Restored cards.  Whether to get more mileage with a new soulbond Silverblade Paladin in a Geist / Delver deck, or pimp that infect deck featuring Inkmoth Nexus with Wolfir Silverbond.

There is a lot to consider and we here at MTG Realm are ready with our own derpy deck ideas post- Avacyn Restored to take to our local games store, OMG! Games in Barrie, Ontario.  One build we have at the moment which may give up a slot or two for new cards may be a mono-white tokens.  This silliness generates tokens via Gather the Townsfolk, Lingering Souls, Increasing Devotion and / or White Sun's Zenith (kittehs!).  The second part of the equation is anthem effects, which until now was Intangible Virtue and Honor of the Pure.  There may be room in the 4-drop slot for an Angel of Jubilation which will also provide your non-black critters a non-enchantment +1/+1 pump.  We're not sure how relevant the Angel's second ability (Players can't pay life or sacrifice creatures to cast spells or activate abilities) may be in the standard constructed meta-game, but it certainly will be gravy.  We've call this fatuous focus the 'S.W.A.B.' or the Stoopid White Anthem Build.
Another contemplation to pas along to you is something in green.  Don't worry, we love brewing as much as playing and will get to all sorts of decks in all the colours.  Anywhoos - this green build (we've called 'Wolf Blitzer') has an aggressive profile with a 'can't block' theme.  Cards such as Wandering Wolf, Champion of Lambholt, and Howlgeist have captured our attention with their ability for a conditional unblocakability.   To pump, we've went with hard counters like Hunger of the Howlpack and Increasing Savagery as well as the soulbond-pump effects with Wolfir Silverheart.  To help us get to the finish line, there is mana dorks with Lawnmower Elf and that DFC, Scorned Villager.  Hunter's Insight should put extra cards in your hand.  Alternatively, a Lead the Stampede may also be worth evaluating.
Anywhoos -
What do you see playing in the next couple of weeks after you get your paws on the new cards ?  Use the comment thingy below and pipe in.

In other news, the folks over at MTG Mint Card has complete Sets of Avacyn Restored Foil Basic Lands (as well as many others) to pimp that foily awesome deck you want to build.  Check them out.

Daggers to Cleavers

~
Happy Thursday MTG peeps,

We here at MTG Realm are continuing along with casual Innistrad deck ideas. Earlier this week, we showed off a mono-black Zombie build and just yesterday we yattered about a green and white build called Township Tokens. Today, we want to talk about three very interesting pieces of equipment in Innistrad - specifically Silver-Inlaid Dagger, Sharpened Pitchfork, and Butcher's Cleaver.

All these equipments give a decent bonus when equipped to a human - so let's hatch a build. At first we were thinking about using our new fav hexproof unblockable human in Innistrad - Mr. Invisible Stalker and perhaps some other hexproof or unblockalbe friends. We quickly realised that this lot was not best suited for the equipment we wanted to build with - so look for another casual deck idea latter using the Stalker and Trepanation Blade.

Anywhoos- back on target now. The equipment we thought was best matched with a mono-white human build featuring some of our favourite fellas from the M12 core set and our new friends in Innistrad. We've wanted to build something with the Gideon trio (Gideon Jura PW, the Lawkeeper and the Avenger). Supporting this mad tapping goodness could be the Avacycian Priest. Others which are good to go for this party may be Elite Vanguard, Doomed Traveller and Fiend Hunter. If latter during playtesting we find the tempo too slow we are considered using Mentor of the Meek (as all of these are powered two or less) for additional card draw.

In a supporting role is the amazingly versatile aura enchantment, Bonds of Faith which can shut down an opponent's threat or give one of your dudes a boost. One of our favourite new double-faced transform in common rarity is Thraben Sentry (another potential draw for the Mentor) which can easily transform into a 5/4 trample beast.

If were to splash green we would provide some consideration for Avacyn's Pilgrim and Hamlet Captain. There are a LOT of really decent cards to choose from but the exercise today was to find the best home possible for the equipment. Pass along some of your ideas below in the comment thingy.

Innistrad Zombies

~
Happy Tuesday MTG peeps,

We hope all had a wonderful Thanksgiving Day here in Canada-land or Columbus Day for our cousins south of the border. Perhaps you had an opportunity to get in a few games and sling some Magic the Gathering cards. We attended the FNM event at our local store OMG! Games here in Barrie and our Tempered Steel deck did not perform as well as it usually does which means it's time to tweak it a bit to challenge the emerging decks in our meta-game.

Instead, we spent time over the long weekend getting some play testing done with some of the new options presented with the latest set release Innistrad. We hatched out some ideas for an Innistrad mono-black zombie deck. Why? There happens to be quite a lot of solid support for a Zombie build in standard at the moment. There appeared to be a good number of blue-black builds out there at the moment but we decided on a mono-black build - especially given that good synergistic cards such as Cemetery Reaper, Endless Ranks of the Dead, Ghoulcaller's Chant, Ghoulraiser, and Unbreathing Horde are available.

One challenge we did have during play testing was the limit of only Diregraf Ghoul and Walking Corpse as one or two-drop zombies. To this end, we brought in Thyphoid Rats which provided much needed breathing room to stall the opponent during the first two turns in order to construct our army of the undead. Anywhoos - let's look at what we thought was a good start . . .

Cemetery Reaper is a must have in this build to not only pump your other brain-eaters but also to produce those 2/2 zombie tokens. Unbreathing Horde may or may not be a good choice for the moment but we could always move it over to the side board. Skinrender provides decent spot removal or at the very least cripples a fatty they may have.

A double dip into your grave yard to bring back zombies is great with Ghoulcaller's Chant. Altar's Reap gives two additional cards to your hand - hopefully you can sac a zombie token - if not, the Chant can place that sacrificed card straight back into your hand again. Distress may be critical as it could remove a powerful card from your opponent's hand. Victim of Night and Distress gives some decent spot removal and Endless Ranks of the Dead may hopefully provide you with a Zombie rave party within a few turns.

Some cards to consider for a sideboard may be found with additional removal with Doom Blade, Go for the Throat, and Tribute to Hunger. A griefer for an opponent playing red or white may be our fav Mirrodin Besieged zombie card Phyrexian Crusader. Ghoulraiser may be a better choice than the mainboard Unbreathing Horde. Call to the Grave may be a smart choice in this sideboard against those pesky hexproof critters.

Some other cards we were contemplating but did not quite make the cut in the play testing we did over the weekend are above. These may still make its way into the final zombie build given futher game results at the kitchen table and Friday Night Magic.

That's it for now - What is your standard take on zombies ? Use the comment thingy to get your opinion heard.

Finally,

The folks over at MTG Mint Card is having another great give-away contest on their FaceBook page.

This event closes on 12th October - (that's tomorrow !) so make tracks sooner than latter.

Innistrad Deck Ideas 1

~
Happy Tuesday MTG peeps,

Now that we have had a proper look at the newest Magic the Gathering set, Innistrad, it's time to put on your skull clamp and get down to brewing. This and following posts with similar titles are certainly not meant to provide a full list from which to build and modify but rather some ideas from which we would hope to provide you with a nexus from which to create your own casual build and rock your game table.

Today's post is all about new Innistrad hexproof unblockable, Mr. Invisible Stalker, which we think will be a much seen card not only at the kitchen table but at your Friday Night Magic event. Getting a Curiosity on this fella, seems like a no-brainer (sorry Zombies) to get an early game kicked into high gear. Being able to provide the Invisible man with two such curiosities will only double your card draw.

To extrapolate this idea further, we need not look beyond recent successful Caw-Blade variants which just required a Swords package and a creature with evasion. We can imagine many an epic game win with Invisible Stalker with a Sword of War and Peace / Feast and Famine - or perhaps one of the several new artifact equipments now available in Innistrad such as Inquisitor's Flail, or Trepanation Blade. If we look for potential bonuses with equipment favouring the human subtype, which Mr. Inviso is, we may also consider Butcher's Cleaver or Silver-Inlaid Dagger.

To exercise full care and control over this little menance, we should also allow some space in our build for counters such as Mana Leak, Turn Aside, and / or Stoic Rebuttal. A parachute (another safety) may be Apostle's Blessing to protect our little blue buddy. To assist floating the cards correctly, we could try Gitaxian Probe or Ponder to help dig a bit.

anywhoos - we have a few cards for you to contemplate. Alternatively, you may wish a blue-white build, use a Mentor of the Meek for card draw, a Snapcaster Mage for some spell recursion, a Mirran Crusader for some aggro - whatever - you get the idea.

Drop us a line below in the comment thingy - how would you go about with an 'Invisi-Blade or Stealth-Blade build ?
~

Lastly, you may wish to modify one or more of the Innistrad Intro Decks above - we suggest getting your Innistrad singles from the folks over at MTG Mint Card.

Innistrad Humans

~
Happy Tuesday MTG peeps,

With the entire Innistrad set now out in the open, it is time to soak up these delicious new Magic the Gathering cards and start thinking about builds to put them in. We are planning to provide over the next week or so, several builds showcasing each one of the 'tribes' of Innistrad - Humans, Spirits, Zombies, Vampires, and Werewolves.

For today's post, we now provide you with a Green / White Human list in a Innistrad block format. We encourage you to use the comment thingy below to suggest improvements or to provide your own list.

The List . . .

37 Spells :
4 Avacyn's Pilgrim
4 Champion of the Parish
3 Elite Inquisitor
4 Hamlet Captain
4 Mayor of Avabruck
3 Spare from Evil
3 Mentor of the Meek
4 Fiend Hunter
3 Elder Cathar
2 Butcher's Cleaver
3 Village Bell-Ringer

23 Lands :
3 Gavony Township
2 Ghost Quarter
8 Forest
10 Plains
~

Avacyn's Pilgrim : A turn one human mana dork tapping for white seems good.

Champion of the Parish : This deck runs humans so this thing should grow very nicely.

Elite Inquisitor : Love the vampire / werewolf / zombie protection but not very useful if your opponent is not running any. Still, first strike and vigilence is great.

Hamlet Captain : A temporary pump to other humans is decent and a 2/2 for 2 is OK.

Mayor of Avabruck : Yeah! this human lord pumps +1/+1 but he has a darker side - a 3/3 werewolf lord side which also produces wolf tokens.

Spare from Evil : This will allow you to land damage on your opponent or perhaps save you from an alpha swing.

Mentor of the Meek : Being able to pay to draw a card is never a bad thing - this is card advantage.

Fiend Hunter : This enter-the-battlefield spot removal creature is decent - just make sure he doesn't take a dirt nap or your opponent will get that creature back.

Elder Cathar : A 2/2 for 3 mana sucks but the ability to dump two +1/+1 counters on another human is a great insurance policy.

Butcher's Cleaver : This provides a +3/0 pump and lifelink if equipped to umm, let's say a first striker like the Inquisitor - not bad at all.

Village Bell-Ringer : This is one of the better commons in this set. A 1/4 which can be flashed in AND untap all your other creature - very nice.

Gavony Township : four mana to dump +1/+1 counters on all our creatures - yes please.

Ghost Quarter : Some of those other non-basic lands look dangerous - here's some protection. This could also be used to on yourself if you have all plains and no forest in your hand.

Stay tuned for more Innistrad block deck thoughts . . .

Lastly, if you have not yet thought about getting in your pre-orders for Innistrad, we suggest you may want to consider dropping by MTG Mint Card.

Deck Ideas

~
Happy Tuesday MTG peeps,

This weekend happens to be Magic 2012 Game Day. If you regularly sling Magic the Gathering cards in the standard format environment at Friday Night Magic, then chances are that you already have a decent build you will want to play this weekend. If you may not have had a lot of exposure to standard and want to jump into the game, we salute you and suggest you make tracks over to Wizards to check out the standard Magic Online decks (linky here) which have been making a splash. Not only will you be playing just for the game, the glory but also these very cool full alternate art promos - Bloodstorm Beserker (participation) and Dungrove Elder (top 8).

As we here at MTG Realm are typically against the grain, we enjoy leaving the popular 'net decks' behind and taking our chances with non-competetive / rogue decks or whatever tickles our fancy as long as it delivers big on the 'fun factor'. Here are a few decks which you may take an interest in. If you have a lone-wolf deck, drop over to MTG Url and submit your linky in the comment thingy below.

Phyrexian Obliterator SCD

~
Happy Monday MTG peeps,

We hope everyone had an oportunity to take in a Magic the Gathering New Phyrexia pre-release event this weekend. We attended a Sunday event which, although we had a blast, did not do very well with our sealed deck games. We did however manage to pull another Karn, the Liberated in a MiniMaster side-event so we're not feeling all that bad about the day. There were quite a few cards that we did pull which we are considering for inclusion in some of our standard constructed build, but we will have another post latter to cover off all of this.

LinkFor today, we wanted to yatter about an interesting card from New Phyrexia which might be making an appearence in several standard mono-black builds. We would also like to hear from you (via the comments form below) to pipe into our Single Card Discussion on LinkPhyrexian Obliterator - the new Phyexian Negator -

Phyrexian Obliterator,
Creature - Horror, Mythic Rare
Trample
Whenever a source deals damage to Phyrexian Obliterator, that source's controller sacrifices that many permanents.
5/5

The single note in the New Phyrexia FAQ document provides the following : "Only permanents still on the battlefield when Phyrexian Obliterator's triggered ability resolves can be sacrificed.". The other important thing to note to avoid confusion is a careful review of the wording "Whenever a source deals damage to Phyrexian Obliterator, that source's controller sacrifices that many permanents." The words are not "a permanent", but "that many permanents" means for every point of damage dealt to the Obliterator, an equal number of permanents are to be sac'd. As this wording won't trigger after damage is dealt, the opposing player will not be able to sacrifice a creature which may have just swung into or just blocked the Obliterator - that player will have to sac one (or more) other permanents.

One way to protect yourself is a zero toughness wall such a Wall of Tanglecord which will be happy to block the Obliterator all day long. Alternatively, there are a number of spot removals available such as Go for the Throat, Dismember, Beast Within (for a serious threat down-grade) Journey to Nowhwere, a metalcraft Dispatch, Condemn, etc. or perhaps a more neutralising effect wuch as Tumble Magnet. Another strategy may be stealing the Obliterator - especially if are attacking with the Oliberator and another creature : we suggest looking into Act of Agression, Act of Treason, Captivating Vampire, etc.

There are a number of other cards in standard which one may want to consider if you are looking to build a mon-black deck with a sac theme : Mortician Beetle, Sadistic Sacriment, or It That Betrays.

The build of choice though would have a more agressive profile, namely using the new Lashwrithe equipped to Phyrexian Obliterator - having a 9/9 trampling horror is never a bad thing (except if you are facing one from the business end).

~

Not sure if Phyrexian Obliterator will go nuclear just like Jace the Mindsculptor ? (perhaps not to the extent that it has gone)

You could wait and see if the hype dies down or take your chances that this card will only go up in value - stay tuned to places like MTG Mintcard and buy smart.

Sneaky UR

~
Happy Thursday to all,

Yesterday we challenged the readership to help us build an awesome standard-compliant aura deck featuring the likes of Eldrazi Conscription and Kor Spiritdancer. eMails are still floating in and the build is starting to take form. Last evening we had a few minutes to squeeze in some playtesting and found that when Sovereigns of Lost Alara hits and sticks, it pretty much game over for your opponent. Loads of fun gaming is expected to be had as this build develops further.

Righto -
I heard someone just before the release of Rise of the Eldrazi call today's game a 'stale-a$$' format. We completely concur with this statement. But now that RoE is hitting game tables everywhere, we sincerely hope that everyone will be leaving their oh-so-predictable Jund decks at home and have some fun experimenting and taking a plunge with new deck archetypes.

To this end, we found an interesting build by echoswitch from the forums : This build he has named Sneaky and I will republish his words which best describe it . . .

Sneaky
is a new competitive and aggressive deck archetype. Using the synergy of the newly printed and quite explosive combination of Kiln Fiend and Distortion Strike, along with aggressive creatures amazing 1cmc spells; Lightning Bolt and Flame Slash, the deck will shatter your opponents before they can even react.

The deck ignores defenses and shrugs of disruption. Typical games for this deck end at turn four or five, but it can pull off turn three wins.

Card Choices
The Good - Every build should be running most of these. Tried, tested, and true.

Kiln Fiend - This is the star of the deck. In combination with Distortion Strike, your opponent will be weeping.

Goblin Guide
- "goblin guide is a must, even if he only gets in for 2. The lands he nets your opponent now that I've played this deck like 30+ times today just doesn't matter because this deck is so fast." - Pahshowned

Plated Geopede
- Can be as explosive as Kiln fiend with fetches

Goblin Arsonist - Adds more 1drops to the deck, while being able to take out 2/2s

Distortion Strike - One of the best blue spells printed this block. Damage, Evasion AND Rebound all for one? I'll take 4

Lightning Bolt - nuff' said

Burst Lightning - nuff' said

Flame Slash - Silly good at taking down creatures. I suggest siding the out for Burst lightnings against less creature heavy decks

Staggershock - Very awesome with Kiln Fiend and the Spellblade. The rebound is just fantastic, and being able to spilt the damage is great

Spell Pierce
- This deck needs alittle bit of protection. I would run this over Dispel, but both are great

Ponder - Better than See Beyond for a number of reasons. It pumps kiln, it digs, it stacks, and can shuffle. Neato!

Into The Roil - Although you'll probably never kick it, the extra mana over Unsummon is well worth the ability to bounce other permanents, such as Planeswalkers.

~
After some playtesting, echoswitch had some excellent games and took first at his local Friday Night Magic with this final build :

The Sneakiest of Sneaks
Creatures 16
3 Goblin Guide
3 Goblin Arsonist
4 Kiln Fiend
2 Plated Geopede
3 Wind Zendikon
1 Ruinous Minotaur

Spells 22
4 Distortion Strike
4 Lightning Bolt
4 Flame Slash
2 Staggershock
3 Ponder
3 Spell Pierce
2 Devastating Summons

Lands 22
4 Scalding Tarn
11 Mountain
7 Islands

Alright on to my games:
GWU Turbo Turns: 2-0
It was a bad match-up for him. I just ignored his planeswalkers and went for the face. The extra draws always helped me more, and whatever beast tokens or walls he dropped were just avoided or burned away.

His deck went on to massacre the rest of tourney by taking like 8 turns in a row. Pure Silliness.

Vamps: 2-0
I was really scared to face this deck. Vamps has decent speed with tons of removal, but luck was on my side. He wasn't running alot of removal main deck due to the meta and had no idea about my deck.

I cleaned up first game quickly and he promptly sided in TWELVE additional removal spells. In game 2, for some crazy crazy reason, he drew 0 removal. None. So I swept house again.

I told him that I was writing this up for forums and he insisted I play one more game for fun, just to showcase what his deck can do. He definitely hit removal in the next game: Goblin Guide? Vendetta, Plated geopede? Urge to Feed, Kiln Fiend? Gatekeeper. I finally try to save the game with a massive Devastating Summons. Double Doom Blade. FML.

Mono-Green Beats: 2-1
First game played pretty standard for me. Guides, Fiends, Bolts and Strikes; Win. Second game he got some crazy accel. Hit every land drop, two llanowars, harrow and explore. Floating 9 green turn 4 is hard to beat. He dropped acidic slimes, Deadly Recluse, and Khalni Hydra. That was game.

Last game was a race. I kept distortioning around his guys, but he kept beating face. I ended the game at 2 life with a wind zendikon and a kiln fiend out, and him with a hydra, 3 llanowar, 2 leatherback baloths and 2 acidic slimes. I was sweating all game.
In Summary
- Ruinous Minotaur was bad. The extra damage was nice, but never totally game changing. The saccing lands is not fun.
- Devastating Summons was a blast. Even if it was just to mess with the opponent by switching strategies away from the fiend. Its a great "Every-thing-else-has-failed" card.
- Staggershock was very good. Good good good.
- Wind Zendikon was the major game changer for me, people just couldn't handle the flying. Most games started with a Goblin Guide, then next turn flying, hastey Wind Zendikon for 4 damage. It doesn't even really slow down the deck at all. Great combo with Devastating Summons, by saccing the enchanted lands, you get to return them to your hand!
- I'm really torn on Flame Slash over Burst Lightning, I think I'm going to run a 3-2 split
- Always mulligan until you have a creature, and both colors of land. Trust me.
- People are scared of goblin arsonists attacking into 2/2s. Use this to squeeze as much damage in as you can.
- Don't worry about taking damage. This deck is one of the fastest in the format. You will always win in the damage race.
- I dropped a few 'pedes to rely less on tapped fetches, making the deck alittle faster. Freeing up the 2-slot for the Kiln Fiends was very nice.
- I think 18 creatures is a good number for the deck. 16 was alright, but the deck really needs dudes on the field.

~

Hats off - a great start and perhaps a new deck which has not yet made it to your local meta-game - our point - keep on developing - We would sooner get a deck like this kick our butt than win a dozen games against a Jund build.

Also up on the radar - MTG Mint Card just got in some very cool deck boxes -

The shizzle holds up to 85 sleeved standard-sized gaming cards. Small removable compartment at the top enclosure for dice. Designed with Ciruelo dragon artwork.

Anywhoos - stay tuned, more post Rise of the Eldrazi deck ideas landing on this blog.
