Eldrazi Spoilers 3-15

~
Happy Monday folks,

About 10 hours ago, the first Rise of the Eldrazi spoilers hit the internets. As it is March Break here in Canada-Land (and there is typically a mass exodus to Florida), we're not sure how many mtg peeps are glued to their monitors and taking in all the new awesome - we know our 3 kids are right now (no school this week).

When first we heard about the pooled spoilers coming out on Monday, over 55,000 of you chatted about this and we also had over 7,000 viewers here on MTG Realm looking at the most excellent Eldrazi Art Spoilers so we're pretty sure you're pumped about it.

After checking out the cards that were spoiled over at StarCity Games by Mr. Evan, or Taylor at 5 Colour Control MTG Webcomic, we suggest you start thinking about pre-ordering the new hotness at MTG Mint Card, or local gamery store. Oh - and don't forget to pick up ROE deck boxes and sleeves too. For the latest 'n' greatest Rise of the Eldrazi spoilers, drop by to see our good friends at Casual Magic, Gathering Magic and Magic Madrid.

~

Alrighty then,
If you are still here and have not yet checked out the new cards yet, here is the skinny . . .

Mammoth Umbra, 4
Enchantment, Aura, Uncommon
Enchant creature
Enchanted creature gets +3/+3 and has vigilence.
Totem armor (If enchanted creature would be destoryed, instead remove all damage from it and destroy this Aura.)

aka - 'Big Shadow'. Look for totemic cards such as this enchantment to assist you in burning through your opponents kill spells. +3/+3 and vigilence is good, especially with a totem safety net for your critical dude. At a 5 cmc though, this may not make the cut for most players.

Mnemonic Wall, 4u
Creature - Wall, Common
Defender
When Mnemonic Wall enters the battlefield, you may return target instant or sorcery from your graveyard to your hand.
0/4

aka - 'Boneyard BringBack'. Almost underpowered with the crazy power-creep in the last few sets but 5 mana for a 0/4 wall AND a instant / sorecery spell recursion line from your yard seems decent enough for a common.

Corpsehatch, 3
Sorcery, Uncommon
Destroy target nonblack creature.
Put two 0/1 colorless Eldrazi Spawn creature tokens onto the battlefield. They have "Sacrifice this ceature : Add 1 to your mana pool."

aka - 'Shake 'n' Bake'. OK - For 5, you get a Doom Blade (worth 2), as well as two chump blockers who could potentially feed an Eldrazi spell (worth another 2). By our arithmetic, this should be worth 4 perhaps 5 at most. To this end, we will be placing a call to Wizard's accountant for a refund.

Valakut Fireboar, 4
Creature - Elemental Boar, Uncommon
Whenever Valakut Fireboar attacks, switch its power and toughness until end of turn.
1/7

aka - 'Polar Boar'. Nice. Pair this up with Colossal Might, Savage Hunger, or Behemoth Sledge and then you are cooking with some serious heat. Alternatively use Kindled Fury or Claws of Valakut to make this a First Striker to bowl the opposition over.

Prey's Vengeance,
Instant, Uncommon
Target creature gets +2/+2 until end of turn.
Rebound (If you cast this spell from your hand, exile it as it resolves. At the beginning of your next upkeep, you may cast this card from exile without paying its mana cost.)

Honestly, we are feeling rather dumb at the moment. Can someone tell us how this works / can be good. It looks like a variant on Flashback and could perhaps work some tempo and tricks for you. We will have to seen what the other spells with rebound look like before passing judgment perhaps we got some awesome 'n' broken things coming our way.

Pathrazer or Ulamog, 11
Creature - Eldrazi, Uncommon
Annihilator 3 (Whenever this creature attacks, defending player sacrifices three permanents.)
Pathrazer of Ulamog can't be blocked except by three or more creatures.
9/9

aka - 'Pathrazonator'. You do NOT want to be looking at the business end of this critter when it is on the table. If you are unable to put it down on your next turn (thank-you summoning sickness), then you are in a world of trouble. Just think - three permanents sac'd. This will start making dents in your manabase, enchantments and critters rapidly - just hope you win the game before the player can pull this out. It's casting cost of 11 is steep but hey - this is a game finisher.

Finally, a brief video (grab a handfull of popKORn), on some of the beautiful Rise of the Eldrazi arts . . .

Okay, so here's the steps to how the "Rebound" mechanic works.

1. You cast the spell in question from your hand (in this case, Prey's Vengeance.)

2. When the spell resolves (assuming it doesn't get countered), if you cast it from your hand, it gets exiled.

3. At the beginning of your next upkeep, you have the option of copying that spell without paying its mana cost.

4. When you do copy it, since you didn't cast it from your hand, once it resolves, it goes to your graveyard normally.

I'm still kind of in the dark about what happens when you don't choose to copy it. Does it remain exiled, or does it go to your graveyard?

1. You cast Prey's Vengeance. It gives +2/+2 to one of your creatures and then is exiled.
2. Your next upkeep the spell is re-cast, you can change its target.

Wait, an UNCOMMON eldrazi creature? That kinda takes the fun out of it. I assumed the eldrazi spells would be rares/mythics.

Takes the fun out of it?! I think that just adds a ton of fun. Hello Eldrazi draft decks.

I think i don't like the whole Annihilator thing.

Just seems a bit to extreme.

With "Rebound", when you cast the spell from your hand, when it resolves it gets removed from game. During your next upkeep, you get to cast it *NOT COPY IT* from your exile pile for free, but since it wasn't casted from your hand, this time it would go into the graveyard. I'm liking this particular card A LOT. A green deck can now technically have 8 pump spells and get in for early damage with say noble heiarch or birds and just play more 1 or 2 drops while still pumping. Pretty sure the uncommon/rare cards with rebound are going to be very close to broken (going to hate it if red gets a burn spell that they can cast for free :/)
