Origins PreRelease Prep

~
Happy Monday MTG peeps,

Here in Central Ontario, we are now experiencing the first proper heatwave of summer.  For Magic: the Gathering players worldwide, things are also heating up as everyone is now looking to this weekend's Magic Origins PreRelease event.  Like most, here at MTG Realm, we are reviewing all the new cards after last Thursday's full reveal and are now evaluating the cards that would make for a strong sealed event.  As is tradition, we'll be off to our local gaming store, OMG! Games and hope to report a Top 8 success.  To find a Magic Origins event near you, pop on over to the 'Locator'.

We would highly recommend reading WotC staffer Gavin Verhey's article today (linky over here) on the mothersite to make the most of your PreRelease event.  For today's article, we want to confirm with you what to expect in the Magic Origins PreRelease Pack.

Magic Origins prerelease packs give players the opportunity to learn the origin of their favorite Planeswalker. There are five prerelease packs, one for each planeswalker's color - White (Gideon), Blue (Jace), Black (Liliana), Red (Chandra), and Green (Nissa). The pack's theme does not guarantee a specific Planeswalker card (obviously).

Each comes with a 7-card seeded booster pack that corresponds with that color. When registering for the Prerelease tournament, each player chooses one. The seeded booster pack will assist players in building a deck by providing a starting point in their chosen color. Each seeded booster pack contains a stamped premium promo card, which players may include in their tournament decks. The prerelease pack further contains 6 regular booster packs, 1 story booklet and 1 Spindown life counter.

The TL/DR - Contents of the Magic origins PreRelease Pack:
• 6 Magic Origins booster packs
• 7-card seeded booster pack, with a stamped promo card
• Cool Planeswalker story booklet
• 1 Spindown life counter

Origins Spoilers 6-30

~
Happy Tuesday MTG peeps,

It may be 'Taco Tuesday' to Lego-philes but here at MTG Realm, we are serving up more hot 'n' fresh Magic Origins spoilers and previews for all the rabid Magic: the Gathering gamers out there.  Here is today's installment as collected from the mothersite and around the interwebs.
~

Hangarback Walker, XX
Artifact Creature - Construct, Rare
Hangarback Walker enters the battlefield with X +1/+1 counters on it.
When Hangarback Walker dies, put a 1/1 colorless Thopter artifact creature token with flying onto the battlefield for each +1/+1 counter on Hangarback Walker.
1,T: Put a +1/+1 counter on Hangarback Walker.
illus. Daarken # 229/272

MTG Reddit preview.  Apparently we may make use of Windstorm from Khans of Tarkir with all the new thopter critters appearing in Magic Origins.  Hangarback scales to late game but does not float our boat.
~
Gideon's Phalanx, 5WW
Instant, Rare
Put four 2/2 white Soldier tokens with vigilance onto the battlefield.
Spell Mastery - If there are two or more instant and/or sorcery cards in your graveyard, creatures you control gain indestructible until end of turn.

Magic Japan preview.  Too mana-expensive for standard but Commander fans may find the 'spell mastery' tech useful against board-wipes.
~

 Disciple of the Rings, 3UU
Creature - Human Wizard, Mythic Rare
1, Exile an instant or sorcery card from your graveyard, choose one:
• Counter target non-creature spell unless it's controller pays 2
• Disciple of the Rings gets +1/+1 until end of turn.
• Tap target creature.
• Untap target creature.
illus. Clint Cearley # 053/272
3/4

PlanetMTG german preview.  Nice control options which may sway late game play in your favour.  Smells combo-riffic.
~

 Talent of the Telepath, 2UU
Sorcery, Rare
Target opponent reveals the top seven cards of his or her library. You may cast an instant or sorcery card from among them without paying its mana cost. Then that player puts the rest into his or her graveyard.
Spell mastery - If there are two or more instant and/or sorcery cards in your graveyard, you may cast up to two revealed instant and/or sorcery cards instead of one.
illus. Peter Mohracher # 78/272

Mothersite preview.  Damn fine card here which is certain to see play in multiple formats.
~

 Despoiler of Souls, BB
Creature - Horror, Rare
Despoiler of Souls can't block.
BB, Exile two other creature cards from your graveyard: Return Despoiler of Souls from your graveyard to the battlefield.
Rats and vultures devour. It desecrates.
illus. Chris Staples # 93/272
3/1

TCG Player preview.  Meh - recursion is nice but not at this price.
~

Priest of the Blood Rite, 3BB
Creature - Human Cleric, Rare
When Priest of the Blood Rite enters the battlefield, put a 5/5 black Demon creature token with flying onto the battlefield.
At the beginning of your upkeep, you lose 2 life.
Some will sacrifice everything for but a taste of power.
illus. David Palumbo # 112/272
2/2

Mothersite preview.  We can get on board with this powerful spell, even with the life-loss - we suggest you kill this priest off to more fully enjoy the token it produces.
~

Abbot of Keral Keep,1R
Creature - Human Monk, Rare
Prowess
When Abbot of Keral Keep enters the battlefield, exile the top card of your library. Until end of turn, you may play that card.
illus. # 127/272
2/1

Hobby Consolas revista juegos preview.  There may be a sweet place in a blue / red Izzet list which may allow you to manipulate the top of your library.
~

Scab-Clan Berserker, 1RR
Creature - Human Berserker, Rare
Haste, renown 1
Whenever an opponent casts a noncreature spell, if Scab-Clan Berserker is renowned, it deals 2 damage to that player.
illus. Dave Kendall # 160/272
2/2

iPlayMTG simplified Chinese spoiler.  Decent card - never underestimate the power of damage generated by static abilities.
~

Animist's Awakening, XG
Sorcery, Rare
Reveal the top X cards of your library. Put all land cards from among them onto the battlefield tapped and the rest on the bottom of your library in any order.
Spell Master - If there are two or more instant and/or sorcery cards in your graveyard, untap those lands.
illus. Chris Rahn # 169/272

Mothersite preview.  Solid mana-ramp tech here - perhaps a green / red build may be beneficial.
~

Evolutionary Leap, 1G
Enchantment, Rare
G, Sacrifice a creature: Reveal cards from the top of your library until you reveal a creature card. Put that card into your hand and each other card revealed this way on the bottom of your library in a random order.
illus. Chris Rahn # 176/272

Hareuya MTG Japan preview.  Not a bad way to dig for a creature to answer a stalled board state but perhaps leaving a bit too much to chance here.
~

Gaea's Revenge, 5GG
Creature - Elemental, Rare
Gaea's Revenge can't be countered.
Haste
Gaea's Revenge can't be the target of nongreen spells or abilities from nongreen sources.
illus. Kekai Kotaki # 177/272
8/5

WotC Elaine Chase preview.  Sweet beater promising to side-step a number of control options - that mana cost though.

Magic Origins Spoiler 6-14

~
Happy Sunday MTG peeps,

Some rather interesting news from yesterday - quite specifically, an odd Magic Origins spoiler of several of the Legendary Creatures / Planeswalkers cards.

It all starts when an individual walks into a local gaming store looking to sell some Magic: the Gathering cards - what appears to be those highly collectible (read: highly expensive) all-black / negative image Planeswalker cards from the San Diego Comic Con.  Closer inspection reveals that these cards are certainly not from a previous SDCC but rather intended for the upcoming one (9th - 12th July) next month.  Forum user 'dataspot' did the MTG fan community a great service and was able to snap a few pics of said cards.

Again, this is NOT official but we are certainly of the mind that these may be the genuine thingy - so let's have a looky-loo -

Jace, Vryn's Prodigy
1U
Legendary Creature -- Human Wizard
T: Draw a card, then discard a card. If there are five or more cards in your graveyard, exile Jace, Vryn's Prodigy, then return him to the battlefield transformed under his owner's control.

-----
Jace, Telepath Unbound

-3: You may cast target instant or sorcery card from your graveyard this turn. If that card would be put into your graveyard this turn, exile it instead.

5

Illus: Wayne Reynolds
----------

Nissa, Vastwood Seer
2G
Legendary Creature -- Elf Scout
When Nissa, Vastwood Seer enters the battlefield, you may search your library for a basic Forest card, reveal it, put it into your hand, then shuffle your library.
Whenever a land enters the battlefield under your control, if you control seven or more lands, exile Nissa, then return her to the battlefield transformed under her owner's control.
2/2
189/272
Illus: Wayne Reynolds
-----
Nissa, Sage Animist
Planeswalker -- Nissa
+1: Reveal the top card of your library. If it's a land card, put it onto the battlefield. Otherwise, put it into your hand.

1RR
Legendary Creature - Human Shaman
Whenever you cast a red spell, untap Chandra, Fire of Kaladesh.
T: Chandra, Fire of Kaladesh deals 1 damage to target player. If Chandra has dealt 3 or more damage this turn, exile her, then return her to the battlefield transformed under her owner's control.
illus. # 135/272
2/2
-----
 Planeswalker - Chandra
+1: Chandra, Roaring Flame deals 2 damage to target player.
-2: Chandra, Roaring Flame deals 2 damage to target creature.

PAX East MTG Panel

~
Happy Friday (again) MTG peeps,

As we promised in the earlier post, we are back again to cover off all the massive Magic: the Gathering news dropped by the MTG Panel at PAX East about two hours ago.  While the live stream was going, we were howling up as many images as possible to our other blog MTG Realm on Tumblr

Anywhoos, here was the runner posted earlier in the day to whet your appetite -
Today at 3 p.m. on the East Coast, in Boston, MA, luminaries from Wizards R&D and brand teams will host a panel that will, to put it mildly, blow your mind.

R&D Design Manager Dave Humpherys, R&D Game Designer Ethan Fleischer, Senior Game Designer and creative guru Doug Beyer, and Global Brand Manager Liz Lamb-Ferro will all be on hand to give a number of tantalizing hints about the next several months, including a number of cards from Dragons of Tarkir, details about Modern Masters 2015 Edition, and an announcement we don't even dare tell you about until it happens.
Right off the hop, here's the Dragons of Tarkir trailer !

Some cards were previewed -

Sarkhan Unbroken, 2GUR
Planeswalker - Sarkhan, Mythic Rare
+1: Draw a card, then add one mana of any color to your mana pool.
-2: Put a 4/4 Dragon creature token with flying onto the battlefield.
-8: Search your library for any number of Dragon creature cards and put them onto your battlefield. Then shuffle your library.
4
Dragonlord Ojutai, 3WU
Legendary Creature - Elder Dragon, Mythic Rare
Flying
Dragonlord Ojutai has hexproof as long as it's untapped.
Whenever Dragonlord Ojutai deals combat damage to a player, look at the top three cards of your library. Put one of them into your hand and the rest on the bottom of your library in any order.
5/4
Sunbringer's Touch,  2GG
Sorcery, Rare
Bolster X, where X is the number of cards in your hand. Each creature you control with a +1/+1 counter on it gains trample until end of turn.

~
The panel aslo talked about the next (and last) core set - Magic Origins.  The big news here is the single preview card - a Planeswalker that also happens to signal a return of double-sided cards -  Say hello to the next Lili -

Liliana, Heretical Healer
Legendary Creature - Human Cleric, Mythic Rare
Lifelink
Whenever another nontoken creature you control dies, exile Liliana Heretical Healer, then return her to the battlefield transformed under its owner's control. If you do, put a 2/2 black Zombie creature token onto the battlefield.
2/3

Liliana, Defiant Necromancer
Planeswalker, Liliana, Mythic Rare
+2: Each player discards a card.
-X: Return target nonlegendary creature with converted mana cost X from your graveyard to the battlefield.
-X: You get an emblem with: "Whenever a creature you control dies, return it to the battlefield under your control at the beginning of the next end step."
3

There is a TON more to go through (Modern Masters), and a bunch of other tid-bits but we'll leave that for another post, to close out, here is the shocking / unexpected announcement of the fall set -
