MTG Canada Tarriff

~
Happy Monday MTG peeps,

EDIT 7.16.2018 : You may wish to read the CBC article on this subject written by Darren Major who had interviewed Dave Teller over at Wizard's Tower in Ottawa.  Article linked right here.

Should you, like us reside and play in Canada, then this may be of interest to you.  The bottom line is, that you should expect to pay a bit more to buy Magic: the Gathering cards.

On May 31, 2018, the United States had announced tariffs on imports of certain steel and aluminum products from Canada at the rates of 25% and 10%, respectively.   Taking into consideration feedback received from Canadians through over 1,000 submissions during public consultations, on July 1, 2018, Canada had imposed countermeasures (surtaxes) against (Canadian) $16.6 billion in imports of steel, aluminum, and other products from the U.S., representing the value of 2017 Canadian exports affected by the U.S. tariffs.

Listed within Table 3 (‘Other Products’) on the countermeasures response from the Canadian Department of Finance Page, and subject to a 10 per cent surtax, one is able to find this line item -

• 9504.40.00 - Playing cards

There had been some early speculation that Magic: the Gathering cards could be construed as a type of collectible card, such as hockey or baseball cards.  This however is not the case, as the Magic: the Gathering card is integral to play the game, and thus is quite solidly considered a playing card.  This has reportedly been confirmed to a Canadian gaming store owner by Wizards of the Coast as well as that store’s supply distributor.

It had been suggested that Wizards of the Coast had worked closely with Canadian distributors to get Core 2019 Prerelease and Release product shipped across the Canadian border before the tariffs go into effect on July 1st, the day the new tariffs had taken place.  Just how much product may have landed in Canada before this date is unclear at this time.

Looking into the future, we hope that this new tariffs will be dismissed soon and relations with our American cousins will normalize.  What may be hindering this is that at one point in the not too distant past, the American Constitution gave Congressional power “to lay and collect taxes, duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States”, whereas the current trend is to shift this to the executive branch.  The current American regime also has a number of loop-holes to employ such as the clause in the 1974 Trade Act, to impose restrictive tariffs where there is “an adverse impact on national security from imports”.

PT BNG Valencia

~
Happy Monday MTG peeps,

What a weekend it was for Canada.  At the winter Olympics, Canada defeated Sweden to defend gold in hockey, and at the Pro Tour Born of the Gods in Valencia, Spain, two Canadians battled in the final round.  Many sports bars here in Canada received special permission to open (and serve) at 5:00 AM for the final hockey game and even a church in Halifax had the game on and provided shortened services inbetween periods.

Here in Barrie, Ontario we got up early to watch hockey as well as tune into coverage of Pro Tour Born of the Gods.  Shaun McLaren (aka ArsenalMunch on MTGO) defeated fellow Canadian Jacob Wilson in the finals of Pro Tour Born of the Gods Modern format, earning the $40,000 first prize and a spot at the World Championship.  A spot very well deserved with his record of 7 wins and 1 loss with an 'American Control' decklist.  Here's the breakdown of the Top 8 players and the decks they took -

Shaun McLaren - WUR Control
Jacob Wilson - Melira Pod
Patrick Dickmann - Tarmo-Twin
Anssi Alkio - UR Twin
Lee Shi Tian - Blue Moon
Christian Seibold - Affinity
Chris Fennell - Storm
Tim Rivera - WUR Twin

We are very happy to see so many diverse decklists here.  Blake Rasmussen provides this list of Top 5 Cards of Pro Tour Born of the Gods - if you are thinking about getting into Modern format the time is now - just stop at MTG Mint Card to start building your Modern arsenal.

1. Threads of Disloyalty
2. Steam Vents
3. Anger of the Gods
4. Birthing Pod
5. Path to Exile

One decklist we were rooting for in particular as we have the list mostly built is Hexproof / Auras -

20 lands
1 Dryad Arbor
1 Forest
4 Horizon Canopy
4 Misty Rainforest
4 Razorverge Thicket
3 Temple Garden
3 Verdant Catacombs

12 creatures
4 Gladecover Scout
4 Kor Spiritdancer
4 Slippery Bogle

28 other spells
4 Daybreak Coronet
4 Ethereal Armor
4 Hyena Umbra
4 Keen Sense
2 Mana Tithe
4 Rancor
3 Spider Umbra
1 Spirit Mantle
2 Unflinching Courage

Sideboard
1 Damping Matrix
3 Grafdigger's Cage
3 Leyline of Sanctity
2 Nature's Claim
3 Path to Exile
1 Silhana Ledgewalker
2 Stony Silence
15 sideboard cards

Ever since Bant Hexproof (Giest of Saint Traft / Innvisible Stocker), we've had a keen interest in fielding a hexproof critter, loading them up with powerful auras and swinging for serious damage.  Modern format is gaining popularity and Wizards of the Coast is supporting this with the release of Modern Masters last June and potentially a new product coming again this summer and we certainly hope to get a hold of a collection of staples which we're lacking right now.

Greg Gutfeld

This will be the first and hopefully last 'non-MTG' post here on MTG-Realm - my apologies.

I wish to have a brief opportunity as a Canadian to bend your ear as to the recent Fox News "Red Eye with Greg Gutfeld" show which aired on or about March 17th. A show segment referred to a March 9th announcement by Canadian Forces Lieutenant-General Andrew Leslie, chief of the land staff, that "Beginning in July of 2011, we will have to explore the possibility of taking a short operational break, that is well organized and synchronized, of at least one year." General Leslie cited shifting demographics, attrition and competition from civilian industry that are draining away a talented pool of soldiers, the general also said damaged equipment will need to be refurbished from the rigours of combat in Afghanistan.

Host Gutfeld mockingly claimed "The Canadian military wants to take a breather to do some yoga, paint landscapes, run on the beach in gorgeous white capri pants." Co-panelist Doug Benson dug the show in deeper by saying: "I didn't even know they were in the war," he said. "I thought that's where you go if you don't want to fight -- you go chill in Canada."

The video was popularized after four Canadians were killed in two separate explosions in the Kandahari hinterlands on Friday. Those deaths brought to 116 the number of Canadian soldiers who have died in Afghanistan since the mission began almost seven years ago. There are about 3,000 Canadian troops in Afghanistan, of which about one-third are members of the fighting force. Canada has suffered the largest number of deaths on a per capita basis among the 40 nations contributing forces in the conflict.

I realise that Greg Gutfield does not represent the views of most intelligent Americans so I shall deliver this message to him, the Red Eye show and the Fox News executives . . . Deliver Greg Gutfeld to us or we will shut off the supply of maple syrup to your country.

Some fast facts . . .

24 Canadians died in the 9/11 terrorist attacks

Canada - Approximately 65,000 active personnel
116 casualities in Afghanistan (0.17 %)

U.S. - Approximately 1,444,553 active personnel
640 casualities in Afghanistan (0.04 %)

To Greg Gutfeld . . .

Scorn and defiance;
slight regard, contempt,

And any thing that may not misbecome

The mighty sender, doth he prize you at.
