Happy Wednesday MTG peeps,
Today we finally got around to posting our video from the New Phyrexia PreRelease but wanted first to review some of the new Magic the Gathering combos and synergies that will be arriving in standard format with the the New Phyrexia official release this Friday.
We do not pretend to know game rules all that well or even play the game very good so we would like you to point out any combos or syngeries below which do not work the way we may think it works. Also - we want to encourage readers to post any pairings which we have not yet yattered about.
Let's go -
Obviously one pairing which received quite a bit of attention is Mindcrank + Bloodchief Ascension which when played correctly will result in a complete mill of your opponent's library as well as infinite damage providing that the Ascension has three counters on it and you've just pinged for two damage.
Next, we have another Splinter Twin combo. You may remember the 3 piece Scars of Mirrodin combo with a Mana Myr, Myr Galvanizer and Splinter Twin - well there's a new bag 'o' tricks using Deceiver Exarch + Splinter Twin to produce an unlimited number of 1/4 Exarchs with haste.
Speaking of updated combos, another Shape Anew combo is available. Previously, the popular one employed Shape Anew with Master's Call to get Blightsteel Colossus out of the library and onto the game table for free. With the large number of non-artifact spells such as Blade Splicer, Shape Anew has a number of new targets to cheat the Colossus out.
Another interesting one uses Urabrask the Hidden to force your opponent's creatures coming into play tapped. Follow up with Royal Assasin to pick them all off one by one. Alternatively, if they just puked a truck-load of tokens out, one may consider using Sunblast Angel instead.
Speaking of tokens, there appears to be some decent help for the token generator Turntimber Ranger using Xenograft. You are certainly not limited to Turntimber - you may use any Ally or tribal build with an EOTB effect - just watch out you don't get Torpor Orb'd.
The next two involve Melira, Sylvok Outcast, the first of which uses Etched Monstrosity to ensure that this beast does not enter the battlefield with all those pesky -1/-1 counters. Alternatively, one could use Vampire Hexmage, Hex Parasite, or even Hex's little brother, Gremlin Mine to knock some or all those counters off.
Finally, a pairing using Melira, Sylvok Outcast and Phyrexian Unlife - both of which are in the same set. This pairing will provide the player with some time to set up a win condition. Essentially, you are provided an effect which ensures that you are unkillable via damage.

And next up - about the New Phyrexia PreRelease we went to on the weekend.
I (CopySix) did not do all that well and would love to blame it in the totally cr@ppy card pool but that sounds like an excuse for not having solid sealed skills. As I was building, I noticed the other MTG Realm half, Junior, digging into a very impressive pool which filled me with envy. Anywhoos - not feeling too bad - I did get quite a few cards I wanted to acquire for standard constructed and did have a blast at our local store, OMG! Games here in Barrie.
Scars of Mirrodin
Pack 1 : Necrotic Ooze, Darksteel Myr, Corrupted Harvester, Necrogen Scudder
Pack 2 : Tunnel Ignus, Riddlesmith, Throne of Geth, Bloodshot Trainee, (foil Halt Order)
Pack 3 : Memoricide, Barage Ogre, Abuna Alcolyte, Exsanguinate
New Phyrexia
Pack 1 : Myr Superion, Entomber Exarch, Vulshok Refugee, Alloy Myr
Pack 2 : Puresteel Paladin, Mindcrank, Brutalizer Exarch, Rage Extractor
Pack 3 : Omen Machine, Entomber Exarch, Necropouncer, Reaper of Sheoldred

Finally, if you have not yet considered getting a lot order of New Phyrexia set - check out MTG Mint Card - their Uncommon / Common set price is very decent and makes a lot of sense - especially when you consider that a deckset of Mental Misstep is also in this lot.
