Innistrad's Liliana

~
Happy Wednesday MTG peeps,

If you were directed here to MTG Realm and did NOT want to be treated to Magic the Gathering spoilers and previews, then someone has made a horrible mistake. If you did want to gorge yourself on all the newest Innistrad awesomeness, then please come on in. We decideed to name oday's post Innistrad's Liliana rather the nomenclaturly correct but rather unimaginative 'Innistrad Spoiler 'N', where N equals the number of Innistrad posts since official preview week began.

Listen to us yatter - wow. Anywhoos - here's the juice - check out today's Innistrad previews.

Liliana of the Veil, 1
Planeswalker - Liliana, Mythic Rare

+1: Each player discards a card.

-2: Target player sacrifices a creature.

-6: Separate all permanents target player controls into two piles. That player sacrifices all permanents in the pile of his or her choice.
Illus. Steve Argyle #105/264
3

Wow - Liliana is cheap! The converted mana cost on this at three instantly makes this playable but before we go all ga-ga, let's look at her abilities. A positive discard is decent, a negative 2 for a critter sac seems a titch too much, and the weird pile sac for negative 6 makes us want to hook up with another PW like Elspeth.
~

Kruin Outlaw, 1
Creature - Human Rogue Werewolf, Rare
First strike
At the beginning of each upkeep, if no spells were cast last turn, transform Kruin Outlaw.
2/2
////////////
Terror of Kruin Pass
Creature - Werewolf, Rare
Double strike
Each Werewolf you control can't be blocked except by two or more creatures.
At the beginning of each upkeep, if a player cast two or more spells last turn, transform Terror of Kruin Pass.
"Hold tight. I've got a surprise for them."
Illus. David Rapoza
3/3

This double-faced card looks great. It will get a bonus while in human form from the likes of Dearly Departed and will benefit the most with Mayor of Avabruck / Howlpack Alpha. There is a truck load of Innistrad cards yet to be spoiled / preview but we think this already is going to be good.
~

Fiend Hunter, 1
Creature - Human Cleric, Uncommon
When Fiend Hunter enters the battlefield, you may exile another target creature.
When Fiend Hunter leaves the battlefield, return the exiled card to the battlefield under its owner's control.
Illus. Wayne Reynolds #15/264
1/3

Never underestimate the potential shennanigans a creature with a 'enters the battlefield' effect on it (think Leonin Relic-Warder or Venser, the Sojouner). Cards somewhat similar to this like Tidehowllow Sculler saw popular play and we think this may too. What would have made this card better if it were Tidehollow Sculler. Gawd we miss that card.
~

Pisteur invisible, 1
Créature - humain et gredin
Défense talismanique
Le Pisteur invisible est imblocable.
1/1

rougly translated :

Invisible Stalker, 1

Creature - Human Rogue, Uncommon
Hexproof
Invisible Stalker is unblockable.
"What bothers me is the vampire's sense of smell and those icy Nephalian nights."
Illus. Bud Cook #60/264
1/1

We kinda choked on a swig of Dr. Pepper when we read the last little bit on the flavour text line. We are really loving it when Wizards drops the funny into the flavour mix. Anywhoos, I so badly want to but a big-arse aura on this like that pseudo-Baneslayer Angelic Destiny and then go to town.

Innistrad Spoiler 1

~
Happy Tuesday MTG peeps,

The latest Magic the Gathering set, Innistrad, is now being officially previewed on the mothership but fans of the game have been busy speculating and pouring over the odd spoiler for some time. If you're just getting your head into the new spoiler season, ensure you catch up by dropping by our continually updated Innistrad Spoiler List as well as checking out recent entries like the Innistrad Minisite post.

Today we wish to yatter about the new rare cycle of enemy colour dual lands. These new lands are similar to the current cycle of allied colour lands we've played with since the M10 Core Set in that they are nonbasic lands that produces two colors of mana and will come into play tapped unless the player already controls one of the two lands they tap for.

The Innistrad dual lands are:

Clifftop Retreat – /
Hinterland Harbor – /
Isolated Chapel – /
Sulfur Falls – /
Woodland Cemetary – /

Enough yattering - let's look at the amazing art on these . . .

~
Moving on, we have two other cards from today's preview on the mothership -

Mentor of the Meek, 2
Creature - Human Soldier, Rare
Whenever another creature with power 2 or less enters the battlefield under your control, you may pay 1. If you do, draw a card.
2/2

A 2/2 for 3 mana just simply sucks but the ability to draw a card or 'cantrip' when you drop a weenie, things heat up considerably. Imagine having Mentor in play, casting Puresteel Paladin then drawing two cards - dang! If you're lucky, that Germ token will draw you yet another card. This cards looks great.
~

Reaper from the Abyss, 3
Creature - Demon, Mythic Rare
Flying
Morbid - At the beginning of each end step, if a creature died this turn, destroy target non-demon creature.
6/6

Here is a showcase of the new Innistrad ability word 'Morbid' which simply provides a stated effect to a creature if another creature died teh turn this came into the battlefield. At the beginning of each end step, Reaper will kill off a non-demon creature - meaning that this will make your opponent feel uncomfortable - this also means that if your opponent's last creature took a dirt nap, this effect will come looking for you and you had better hope you only had demon creatures on your side of the game table. Altough we like this card, we would rather just stick with a core set Titan which not only is cheaper but also does not have a such a challenging trigger.

That's it for now - if we come across any Innistrad spoiler tidbit we will pass it along via TWITTER, alternatively, just drop by again tomorrow - same bat time, same bat channel.

Innistrad Mechanics

~
Happy Sunday afternoon MTG peeps,

We are still reeling from the massive Innistrad previews from yesterday evening's Magic the Gathering party at PAX Prime in Seattle. Wizards thoughtfully followed up yesterday's exceptional event with two special Daily MTG posts today - please check it out here and here. Here at MTG Realm, we have just posted our customary Spoiler List for Innistrad which we will be updating continuously to keep you, the reader, in the loop as to the latest spoilers and previews.

For now, here's a summary of the Innistrad mechanics . . .
~

Innistrad is the first Magic the Gathering set to feature cards with different card backs. These cards have two card faces on each side, and are to be used for the new 'transform' mechanic, changing creatures into different creatures and back. When playing with double sided cards, players may use a checklist which has a regular card back and the player marks on the card which double-faced card the card is supposed to represent. Playing with only the double-faced card is also allowed if the player is playing with opaque sleeves.

->

->

The transformation mechanic is indicated on the card with the word "transform". This mechanic also introduces new symbols representing a sun and a moon which appear to the left of a card name. The symbols specifically indicate the creature before transformation (day) or after transformation (night). Transforming creatures always enter the battlefield as before transformation, and once transformed not all creatures can transform back. During transformations, Auras, Equipment and Counters stay on the creature.

Innistrad also introduces a new subtype for Enchantments named "Curse", which are simply Auras which enchant players and will totally suck if you are the 'cursed' player. The set also has a nifty graveyard based theme and features the return of flashback.

It also introduces the keyword action Fight, which represents the ability of Arena or Tahngarth, Talruum Hero. Two creatures that fight deal damage equal to their power to each other.

Innistrad also features the new ability word Morbid in which creatures get benefits if another creature died the turn they entered the battlefield.

Liliana Vess returns as a new card named Liliana of the Veil.

Garruk Wildspeaker also returns on a new card, the first Planeswalker card with five abilities.

~

That's it for now - stay tuned as we promise to continually update our Innistrad spoiler / preview page as well as feed along summaries of all the new card awesomeness which comes to light.
