Proliferate Allies

~
Happy Thursday MTG Realm readers,

Today, we have another wacky casual deck idea to make for some fun games - this time involving Zendikar Allies and the new keyword ability Proliferate from the newest Scars of Mirrodin set. Essentially, we hope for an explosive metamucil start with a variety of low-costing aggro creatures and spells and follow-up with a big can 'o' proliferate.

Proliferate cards included in the build are Thrummingbird, Contagion Clasp, Steady Progress and Contagion Engine. The cards we want to target with these proliferating cards are Hada Freeblade, Kanzandu Blademaster, Umara Raptor, Luminarch Ascension, and Talus Paladin. Both Jace and Ajani will also welcome the additional loyalty counters dropped on them.

To round out the deck in support of the Allied troops are Kabira Evangel (providing colour protection for Allies), Talus Paladin (giving some sweet lifelink), Join the Ranks (instant Ally triggers), and Sun Titan (to recur most all other permanents from the grave).

Here's the deck list . . .

60 Card Deck CARDS - 38 Creatures - 19 Other Spells - 19
4 Hada Freeblade
3 Luminarch Ascension
3 Thrummingbird
2 Contagion Clasp
3 Mana Leak
3 Kazandu Blademaster
2 Umara Rapto
2 Jace Beleren
3 Steady Progress
3 Kabira Evangel
2 Ajani Goldmane
2 Talus Paladin
3 Join the Ranks
2 Sun Titan
1 Contagion Engine

LANDS - 22
13 Plains
7 Island
2 Celestial Colonnade

We did not get around to playtest this fully yet but did have a quick match against a mono-green stompy that featured some good mana ramping. Anywhoos, we are certainly pleased with the initial results - game matches usually ended swinging with a redonkulously pumped-up Kazandu Blademaster swinging in for lethal damage.

The next step of course is that we have you, the reader, provide some input - we have the beginning of a decent build for some fun games - your suggestions and constructive criticisms are certainly most welcome - drop a comment below.

Finally -

Master and Commander

~
Happy Tuesday MTG peeps,

Nope, this is not an article about Russell Crowe's latest cinematic excellence aboard some British naval frigate battling in the Napoleonic Wars. This article has to do with Sheldon Menery, the Master of Elder Dragon Highlander (EDH), or as some call it, Commander.

Recently, Sheldon (a Magic the Gathering Level 5 DCI judge and Pro-Tour veteran) had something of interest he wrote on his Facebook page; "if you love EDH, tune into magicthegathering.com on 2 December for an exciting announcement." Oddly enough, Wizards of the Coast, through their corporate lawyer filed trademarks with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on the 18th October. The trademark was for "Magic: the Gathering - Commander".

Popular belief in many of the various MTG rumour mills indicate some product development by Wizards to deliver to market a multi-player singleton. This seems the most plausible conclusion - EDH / Commander has already been pulled into MTG Comprehensive Rules and certainly is one of the most popular non-sanctioned MTG varient. Perhaps we can expect some pre-constructed (pre-cons) hitting a brick 'n' mortar games store near you in the new year, perhaps sometime after Mirrodin Besieged is released. Having just said that, we do recognise that there may be quite a few hard-core EDH players out there not happy with the news that WoTC is paying attention to this game format - please pipe in so we can hear your opinion. Anywhoos, we think that if Sheldon is excited about this, then we should be too, not that we are Sheeple, but in Sheldon we trust.

Righto - in other news, another new Magic Trademarks had surfaced . . .

WoTC on the same date they filed MTG - Commander with U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, also filed "Duel Decks: Ajani vs Nicol Bolas". This sounds like a very interesting duel deck which we should expect sometime latter next year. Whatever the final decklist is to be, we do hope that not only will both decks be on equal power footing with eachother (Wizards usually does a rather decent job at this) but we also hope that the money cards (bombtastic rares) will be evenly distributed between both these decks. What do you folks foresee as possible inclusion in the (approximately 6) rare slots here ?

~
Briefly, here is the low-down on EDH / Commander at-a-glance rules . . .

Commander, sometimes called “Elder Dragon Highlander,” starts with the rules for multiplayer Free-for-All games, in which any number of players compete against each other as individuals. It’s played with the Singleton format (in other words, except for basic lands, each card in your deck must have a different name), and each player starts with a life total of 40 rather than the usual 20.

Most importantly, the centerpiece of each deck is a legendary creature that serves as that deck’s commander.
To build a deck, you first choose a legendary creature, called a “commander” or “general,” then construct a Singleton deck around it containing exactly 99 other cards.

Only cards of the commander’s color(s) and colorless cards may be included in the deck. (Note that split cards and hybrid cards count as all of their colors.) In fact, if a card contains a mana symbol anywhere on it that’s not one of your commander’s colors, you can’t include it in that deck! Within the game, if you would add mana to your mana pool that’s a color not shared by your commander, you get colorless mana instead.

MTG Challenge - ProLev

~
Happy Monday MTG Realm readers,

The recent Rise of the Eldrazi set gave Magic the Gathering players quite a smörgåsbord of options for your casual game. One mechanic that did set our imaginations off to brew some builds was the 'level up' keyword ability. Creatures with the this level up keyword are able to become larger or acquire new abilities with an investment of mana. The number of level counters on a creature indicates its current level, as well as its power, toughness, and extra abilities. We love level up as it is a sorcery-speed ability that can often take your opponent by surprise. What we did not really care for very much is how fragile and prone to spot removal some of the levellers were before we could put level counters on them.

Having stated our hesitation, we do appreciate the help that Time of Heroes (a pump of +2/+2) - the downside - one could only benefit from this if the creature already had a levlel counter on it. This could be partially addressed by using Venerated Teacher to place two level counters on each level up creature you control.

Unfortunately, timing the teacher was difficult - too often one had this in hand with only one or two levellers in play on your side of the game table, or the teacher was late for class and did not show until you were up to your elbows in goblins. Training Grounds was indeed a great card to have in a build such as this by reducing the sometimes expensive levelling cost (or any other activated creature ability by 2. We continually tweaked some of the casual brews we had and soon just abandoned any thought of a deck with a level up theme.

Fast forward to the release of Scars of Mirrodin and the sweet new tech - proliferate. Proliferate is a new keyword action that allows you to choose any number of players and / or permanents that each have at least one counter of any type. You would then place another counter on each player or permanent with one more of that type of counter. Poison counters are the only type of counters a player could accumulate, but the rest of the field was pretty much wide open. The popular choice for many casual standard players is proliferating poison counters on players and -1/-1 counters of creatures. The Trigon cycle (Trigon of Mending, Trigon of Thought, Trigon of Corruption, Trigon of Rage, Trigon of Infestation) also enjoyed attention with proliferate.

Soon after the Scars of Mirrodin spoiler was complete, we revisited the Zendikar Quest cycle with our new proliferate tech to determine whether we could abuse any of those cards. Quests are enchantments from Zendikar which counters are accumulated to trigger various abilities for specific events.

Quests came in different rarities - the Common Expedition cycle (Sunspring Expedition, Ior Ruin Expedition, Soul Stair Expedition, Zektar Shrine Expedition, and Khalni Heart Expedition), the Uncommon Quest cycle (Quest for the Holy Relic, Quest for Ancient Secrets, Quest for the Gravelord, Quest for Pure Flame and Quest for the Gemblades) and the Rare Ascension cycle (Luminarch Ascension, Archmage Ascension, Bloodchief Ascension Pyromancer Ascension, and Beastmaster Ascension). From these, only the rare Ascension cycle did not require the player to sacrifice the enchantment which meant one could possibly rinse and repeat. We are still looking at the Ascension cycle to proliferate but want to explore the levellers one last time before dismissing them for the time being.

Hence - your challenge this week -

Sorry - no cool prizes to hand out - just the notoriety we award you for your master home brew skills. Your homework - use these proliferate cards (Inexorable Tide, Steady Progress, Thrummingbird, Contagion Clasp, Contagion Clasp, Contagion Engine, and Throne of Geth) with a level up themed deck.

The levellers : Caravan Escort, Hedron-Field Purists, Ikiral Outrider, Kabira Vindicator, Knight of Cliffhaven, Student of Warfare, Transcendent Master, Coralhelm Commander, Echo Mage Enclave Cryptologist, Hada Spy Patrol, Halimar Wavewatch, Lighthouse Chronologist, Skywatcher Adept, Guul Draz Assassin, Nirkana Cutthroat, Null Champion, Zulaport Enforcer, Brimstone Mage, Kargan Dragonlord, Lord of Shatterskull Pass, Beastbreaker of Bala Ged, Joraga Treespeaker, Kazandu Tuskcaller

~
Happy Friday MTG folks,

Although we here at MTG Realm do not play the very popular Magic the Gathering online we do want to ensure that those readers who visit us here are kept up to date as to the goings on in that virtual game play space.

Revealed / previewed today via Gatherer is the full Masters Edition IV spoiler list. If you are unaware, Masters Edition IV is a Magic Online-exclusive set composed entirely of cards originally printed in previous Magic: The Gathering sets, including Antiquities, Arabian Nights, Ice Age, Legends, Limited (Alpha), Portal, Portal Second Age, The Dark, as well as some other sets. All cards will appear with their original artwork and original-style card frames. The set goes on sale in Magic Online beginning January 10 and will be available for a limited time.

Masters Edition IV features 269 cards and includes 12 land, 80 common, 72 uncommon, 105 rare cards and is not redeemable. One thing to note however is that Gatherer claims only 260 of the 269 cards.
