Many thanks to the hero of the hour quodo and many others who had contributed generously to complete the Magic 2010 spoiler . . . We now have the last ten cards and are sitting at 249 / 249 !

Over the next few weeks, MTG Realm will be digesting these and excreting opinions as to what's hot / what's not and what this may mean for standard.

Let's have a look at the last ten now . .

Bragster Magic

~
Just a note about the last post . . . specifically something interesting about Dragon Whelp. This card was spoiled by Wizards via Bragster. If you haven't heard about Bragster, please don't feel left out - I hadn't either until just earlier this week.

Bragster is an online social webpage to dare your friends, record a challenge, upload evidence and brag about 'it' (whatever 'it' was) forever. Think of Bragster kind of like what would happen if Facebook meets Jacka$$ on eHarmony.

Anywho, it appears that Wizards of the Coast is really exploring every online social media outlet. They had teamed up with Bragster to celebrate the release of their 2010 Core Set and upcoming Grand Prix event in Brighton, UK - in addition to witnessing the crazy a$$ dares that MTG players could dream up . . . . sounds lame but I don't mind at all really.

Here's why - - -

A few days ago, Wizards posted three 'dares' on Bragster -
* "I dare everyone to Leave a sticker or stencil the planeswalker symbol somewhere in public",
* "I dare everyone to Learn to play Magic, or teach a friend", and
* "I dare everyone to Show us how YOU rule with Magic: the Gathering!"

In response, Bragster user dragonangyle dared Wizards to spoil a Magic 2010 card exclusive to Bragster members only. Well he got his wish and subsequently, we got Dragon Whelp . . . Thanks !

Why would you want to join fellow MTG players in the Bragster pool . . . ?
Apparently some very good reasons - they will be giving away "loads of cool prizes, including a netbook computer, iPod, Xbox 360". The huge awesome win - "a grand prize of a trip for you and a friend to the Magic World Championships in Rome, Italy this November!". Sign me up right now.

MTG Realm rose to the stencil / sticker challenge and tagged the former Popemobile on display at museum.

~

Here's how it works :

Getting started with Magic on bragster:

1. Step 1 - If you're not already a bragster user, sign up

2. Step 2 - Send an email to magic@bragster.com with your name, address, and bragster username, so we can send you a pack of goodies to get you going. This will include 2 starter decks, playmat, and instructions so you and a friend can learn to play, and planeswalker symbol stickers and stencils to enter this dare

3. Step 3 - Get entering the open dares and win yourself some awesome prizes!

Prize details:

Grand prize
- The best entry across all 5 dares, as chosen by the Magic team, will win a trip for 2 to the Magic world championships in Rome this November. Package includes hotel accomodation, flight(s) (for both of you if you live in Europe, just you if you live further afield), vouchers for free side events, and a Kodak Zx1 HD video camera, so you can make a record of your trip to post on bragster when you get back!

Individual dare winner prizes

- The winners of the 5 dares will receive prizes for each as follows:

* Show us how you rule - your choice of either an Acer Aspire netbook computer, OR a foil, rare uncut sheet of M10.
* Learn to play - an Xbox 360 console.
* Planeswalker symbol - an iPod Nano, customised by a Magic: the Gathering fantasy artist.
* wait and see!
* wait and see!

Participation prizes
- For all the other great entries to the 5 dares, we'll be giving away a whole host of other prizes including Magic skateboards, "Here I Rule" satchels, M10 product, Magic card portfolios, and more!

M10 Spoiler 12

~
Welcome back and happy Tuesday to all. Some more Magic 2010 spoilers for your inquisitive eyes. Before I get to the juice, I have to say again that the card art in M10 really impresses me. Enough said, this way to new card awesomeness and some M10 strategy / review on the new spoilers.

~
Indestructibility, 3W
Enchantment - Aura, Rare
Enchant permanent
Enchanted permanent is indestructible.

This card is OK . . . that is is you like really bad cards. Four mana to make something indestructible ? Nutty. Why not try Shield of the Oversoul (a common to boot too!) for only 3 mana - Shiled gives +2/+2 for a green / white critter AND flying AND indestructible. The only thing that Indestructibility gives you extra is that it could be placed on any permanent (enchantment or creature). You guys can have mine.

~
Merfolk Sovereign, 1UU
Creature - Merfolk, Rare
Other Merfolk creatures you control get +1/+1.
{T}: Target Merfolk creature is unblockable this turn.
2/2

There is not really any support for Merfolk in this set but look to Lorwyn / Shadowmoor and then you're cooking with gas. This card is a solid improvement over the Lorwyn Merfolk Liege Merrow Reejerey. I would giggle with evil glee to be able to be able to use Merfolk Sovereign ability to give Wanderwine Prophets an unblockable swing and then take an additional turn . . . just sweet.

~
Xathrid Demon, 3BBB
Creature - Demon, Mythic Rare
Flying, trample
At the beginning of your upkeep, sacrifice a creature other than Xathrid Demon, then each opponent loses life equal to the sacrificed creature's power. If you can't sacrifice a creature, tap Xathrid Demon and you lose 7 life.
7/7

This this card highly situational and otherwise bad . . . you tell me. Again . . . if I get this, just know that I will be trading it for a few good commons (if I can get it).

~
Dragon Whelp, 2RR
Creature - Dragon, Uncommon
Flying
{R}: Dragon Whelp gets +1/+0 until end of turn. At the beginning of the end step, if this ability has been played four or more times this turn, sacrifice Dragon Whelp.
2/3

I guess that one would not really want to pay out 4 mana to see this sacked at the end of turn unless you really need to hit 6 for-the-win. MTG Realm suggestions serving this card with the Shards of Alara enchantment Crucible of Fire to pump the Whelp into a more sizeable 5/6 piece of nastiness.

~ Stay tuned for more M10 spoilers / reviews.

We only need details on 10 more cards to have the set spoiler complete. Looking for : Borderland Ranger, Bramble Creeper, Centaur Courser, Cudgel Troll, Emerald Oryx, Entangling Vines, Mist Leopard, Mold Adder, Prized Unicorn, and Stampeding Rhino.

M10 Spoiler 11

~
Hello again folks,
Just another quick update on the Magic 2010 spoilers. For up-to-date (minute by minute) juice, you can check out our buddy Streetz at Magic Deck Vortex or pop over to MTG Sally for the skinny.

Anywho - We are just posting a few odd jobs here which have accompanying artwork - buckle up and lets go.

~
Earthquake, XR
Sorcery, Rare
Earthquake deals X damage to each creature without flying and each player.

Anytime I see an 'X' in a mana cost (or in the power / toughness department), I take serious notice. Earthquake however does not really float my boat as it were. Banefire rocks and knocks this reb burn poser out of the park.

Goblin Chieftain, 1RR
Creature - Goblin, Rare
Haste
Other Goblin creatures you control get +1/+1 and have haste.
2/2

I really wish I had a card like this back in my Lorwyn boggart days - that would have been very cool - pumped and hasty goblins - nice! I am currently dusting off my collection for Goblin fatties and dreaming about a deck which includes this very nice card.

Rhox Pikemaster, 2WW
Creature - Rhino Soldier, Uncommon
First strike
Other Soldier creatures you control have first strike.
3/3

In this core set edition, the colour White really seems to be doing very well. If, during your pre-release / release, you see another player slinging white cards, chances are, there are some soldiers in the mix. Between Captain of the Watch, Rhox Pikemaster, Elite Vanguard, Palace Guard, and the Veterans (Armorsmith and Swordsmith), the white aggro / soldier deck nearly builds itself here.

Nature's Spiral, 1G
Sorcery, Uncommon
Return target permanent card from your graveyard to your hand. (A permanent card is an artifact, creature, enchantment, land or planeswalker card.)

Never underestimate the usefulness of recursion. Being able to fetch a critter or another spell from the graveyard is good and for only two mana, I would venture 'reasonable'. There are about a half-dozen or so cards which simple 'exile' (remove from game) your fav cards so this may put a damper on fun. Altso, Nature's Spiral really hates Haunting Echoes which promises to be a high pick for black.

Djinn of Wishes, 3UU
Creature - Djinn, Rare
Flying
Djinn of Wishes enters the battlefield with three wish counters on it.
2{U}{U}, Remove a wish counter from Djinn of Wishes: Reveal the top card of your library. You may play that card without paying its mana cost. If you don't, exile it.
4/4

Totally kewl art, totally kewl name but damn ! This card kinda sucks - unless you find a very specific purpose for this, I don't think this will see much play . . . really - what are the chances of paying 3 and then getting a free fatty (without using a harbinger) ?

~

M10 Spoiler 10

~
Our last post on Friday, we were looking at approximately 174 of 249 Magic 2010 spoiled cards to date. One word comes to mind . . . 'Deluge' - as in an overwhelming volume of card details coming to light.

A very large portion of the card reprints this season were due to the Great Gatherer Gaffe but special mention must be provided to forum fan 'Quodo' from France who graciously gave whatever he had (which was a lot) - hoping also that the WoTC spooks don't nail him with a ban either.

Anywhoos - Lets have a full review of a glorious 225 of 249 cards we have to date and hope that card art is shortly following . . . reviews coming soon !

The Great Gatherer Gaffe : Part Two

When last we left our fearless MTG blogger (yours truly 'CopySix'), just a few short hours ago in this previous post, spoiler nutters over on the forums were busy at work URL-hacking the Magic: The Gathering card database, simply known as 'Gatherer'. This is the database where the dB Administrator pre-loaded Magic 2010 reprints ahead of the official pre-release. This most epic of spoilers is only equally matched by the epic facepalm fail of the Administrator who perhaps underestimated the tech-savvy forum nerds.

Gatherer is down to fix the mess at the moment but the (un)official body count now stands at 174 of 249 M10 cards spoiled. (Cards in bold are not reprints but new cards spoiled elsewhere other than the Gatherer Gaffe). Stay tuned to in depth review of new cards latter.

M10 Spoiler 7

~
I am a bit disapointed that Gatherer appears to be down at the moment - I'll pretend for now that WoTC accidentally uploaded all the Magic 2010 and Zendikar cards into the database and are now hurrying to clean it up. In this day dream, I'm the one who was able to recall with perfect clarity all the card details and flavour text before Gatherer went off line.

Anywhoos - Three more M10 spoilers for you - TWO new card and two reprints.

Harm's Way, W
Instant Uncommon
The next 2 damage that a source of your choice would deal to you or a permanent you control this turn is dealt to target creature or player instead.

This a fantabulous one drop for white and should be seeing solid casual play. This is a nice answer to Red's 'Lightning Bolt'.

~

Elite Vanguard, W
Creature - Human Soldier, Uncommon
2/1

I am liking the power of the cards here - who can complain about a functional reprint of Savannah Lions ?

~
Soul Warden, W
Creature - Human Cleric, Common
Whenever another creature enters the battlefield, you gain 1 life.
1/1

A very decent one drop. In 9th and 10th edition, Soul Warden was uncommon. I am feeling very good about this being a common again.

~

Ponder, U
Sorcery, Common
Look at the top three cards of your library, then put them back in any order. You may shuffle your library.
Draw a card.

Always a solid choice for your average blue deck. This provides some level of control for executing your game strategies.

~

Here is a great image . . . just imagine yourself cracking open a Magic 2010 Fatpack at your desk instead of filling out your TPS report.

M10 Spoiler 6

~
Some new Magic 2010 spoiler info for you folks today.

First off, Mr. Quodo from MTG France has these three spoilers on good word. The Baneslayer Angel is just nuts and a bit hard to beleive however - just too overpowered. I wish it were true however - I'd pick up a deckset right in a hearbeat.

Baneslayer Angel by Eric Deschamps

Baneslayer Angel, 3WW
Creature - Angel, Mythic Rare
Flying, First Strike, Lifelink
Protection from Demons and Dragons
5/5

Planar Cleansing, 3WWW
Sorcery, Rare
Destroy all Non-land permanents

Gargoyle Castle
Land, Uncommon
Tap : Add 1 to your mana pool
{5}, {Tap} : Sacrifice Gargoyle Castle and put a 3/4 colourless Gargoyle token with flying into play.

~

Also of interest - WoTC has provided a list of sixteen cards that have been in every core set from Alpha to Tenth Edition. Apparently, the new core set will have only eight from the list.

Over the next few weeks, Wizards will be counting them down in the Arcana sub-feature, giving an "IN" or "OUT" on one card a day. Here is the list to date . . .

Air Elemental
Bog Wraith
Drudge Skeletons - IN
Fear - OUT
Giant Growth - IN
Giant Spider
Goblin King
Grizzly Bears
Howling Mine
Nightmare - IN
Orcish Artillery
Regeneration - OUT
Rod of Ruin
Samite Healer
Scathe Zombies
Wrath of God

Anywhoos - forget about what they are saying and have a quick look at a few new Magic 2010 spoilers. The M10 Minisite is also up and running so make sure you make tracks over there regularly as well.

Ant Queen, 3GG
Creature - Insect, Rare
1{G}: Put a 1/1 green Insect creature token onto the battlefield.
5/5

Drowned Catacomb
Land, Rare
Drowned Catacomb enters the battlefield tapped unless you control a Island or Swamp.
{T}: Add {U} or {B} to your mana pool.

Vampire Nocturnus, 1BBB
Creature - Vampire, Mythic Rare
Play with the top card of your library revealed.
As long as the top card of your library is black, Vampire Nocturnus and other Vampire creatures you control get +2/+1 and have flying.
3/3

Wall of Bone, 2B
Creature - Skeleton Wall, Uncommon
Defender (This creature can't attack.)
{B}: Regenerate Wall of Bone.
1/4

(I will be back in the loop and on track for tomorrow's post, so please c'mon back for more witty drivel / reviews and our fav subject - MTG spoilers !)

We made a trade deal, Carbon received my cards and unfortunately I did not receive his. Carbon went out of his way and got a second set off to me. I received the second set the same day his first mailing came in - the letter was misdirected to a neighbour down the street who was on vacation for a week or two. Everything worked out fine and the second set was mailed back to Carbon. I truly appreciate anyone who ensures a perfect score on their trade feedback. Thanks Carbon!

M10 Speculation 2

~
You folks may recall this image purportedly from the art for the upcoming Magic 2010 fatpack . . .

One question we have is . . . .

Who the heck is this guy ?

One crazy opinion is that this may very well be a M10 Planeswalker - perhaps even a modified blue-black Jace Beleren . . . or even a mage-like Sarkhan Vol - or even a bastard hybrid of both of them.

Whatever this may be, one person certainly know . . . Daarken.

You can check out his completely amazing Magic: The Gathering art on his blog HERE.

M10 UltraPro Products

~
We have some interesting Magic 2010 ('M10') UltraPro Products for your spoiler hungry eyes today. If you are not quite sure what this is - just look around during your next FNM and you may see the tables in your game shop quite literally littered with these things.

Our interest here is quite simply M10 spoilers . . . what art is provided on these products. We scored this time around by learning the (partial) names on some of these arts as well.

As for the first one, everyone here is still guessing - - Please jump in if you have a theory - new card or reprint ?

Week Away

~
Good Day MTG Realm readers,

My most sincere apologies but a whole lot of work got in the way. As a result, I am away on business for this week and most likely to a dark, far-flung region where 'teh internetz' do not exist.

Please this time to visit / reread previous posts or visit one of my friend's blogs :

Please note that I will be back in force for your favourite subject - Magic 2010 / Zendikar spoilers, and the like.

EDIT (1730 Hours) : I have secured accomodations which (thank the heavens above) is able to provide some WiFi action - I may be able to provide an update or two - so please set yourselves at rest - I still may be able to get some spoiler updates from the usual suspects and be able to pass it along. :-)

MTG / M10 Webcomic

~
During the recent WoTC article by Mark Rosewater, 'Tweet Talk', mechtroid asked whether MaRo if he read any (Magic: the Gathering) webcomics?

His response
"I skim a bunch but the three I make sure to read regularly are xkcd, Unshelved, and FreakAngels. Back when there were weekly Magic webcomics (including UG Madness, where I showed up as a regular character), I also read those. Come on, someone, step up."

Stepping up as MaRo urged is Andy Hull, an author, illustrator and programmer of interactive book company 'Story Fort'. Andy had installed his very first Magic webcomic just yesterday on the new site TomeBoy. His subject - the new M10 rules of course. The first strip is called 'Battlefield Trip' . . . very funny and intelligent, and I intend to be reading over at TomeBoy.

Thanks to Andy Hull for his kind permission to repost this comic !

Also - newsworthy today is the expected July FNM Promo card 'Murderous Redcap'. I rather liked the orignal art by Dave Allsop and the new alternate art by Mark Hyzer is pretty damn good. Enjoy this card until it rotates out latter this year in October.

Until October, why not try some of these lovely cards together in a deck . . .

What Happend to - ?

~
What ever happened to . . . the Hurloon Minotaur ?

Perhaps I should start at the . . erm, . start.

Anywhoos - A very long time ago (around 1999), Wizards of the Coast had a chain of retail gaming stores. In a strange and far away place (Seattle), they had their flagship store on 'the Ave' and enjoyed brisk business. In the dark dungeon of this store, was a place of wonder and magic called 'Ye Olde Gaming Hall'. In fact, you may even recall last April on the Wizards site, a picture showing the stairs down to this place.

Wizards closed all of its stores by the spring of 2004 in "concentrate on game design". Some think that this was directly attributed to the new owners of Wizards of the Coast - the dark and evil corporate entity called Hasbro who were greedy for more gold that the retail stores could provide - not too unlike the Dwarves of Moria, who dug ever deeper for mithril. Whatever - Perhaps a wise move - but why close all of them - players need a Mecca - a physical place where they may visit and revel unabashedly in their geekery.

- Anyway - I digress . . .

This brings us to the our subject - the iconic Hurloon Minotaur above the stairs. What happend to the Hurloon Minotaur ?

Legend has it that when the store closed, contractors responsible to decommision this holiest of MTG retail outlets had pried the minotaur off the wall in chunks and dumped them onto the curb outside, where they awaited an uncertain fate.

All is now revealed and the truth lays hidden in the back garden of Steve's Weird House. Steve is the owner / occupant of Seattle's Strangest Home & Private Museum. How the fabled Hurloon Minotaur (or the other million curiosities for that matter) came into the possession of Steve is shrouded in mystery and intrigue. Check the VR images for the Hurloon Minotaur from the old WOTC store in Seattle.

w0w . . . Just awesomeness !

M10 Rules Changes

~
The world is changed. I feel it in the water. I feel it in the earth. I smell it in the air. Much that once was is lost, for none now live who remember it. It began with the forging of the Great Rules by the MTG Overlord Aaron Forsythe . . .

Well aren't these interesting times we live in. The Magic the Gathering fan community appear to be in a heightened state of frenzied discussion as to the new rules which were unveiled yesterday over at WoTC.

As with most news of this sort, the community appears somewhat polarized as to whether these changes are welcome or not. From some rants I've read, there are many who promise to quit the game altogether citing that the new rules have now 'dumbed' the game down. These are most likely the players who had crushed a casual player like me at FNM with elegant manipulation of damage on the stack. Others, myself included, are more accepting of the changes.

Perhaps I have more faith that I and other players will be able to develop and implement new strategies and tricks. This is evolution at its best. My goal is to win and am willing to adapt and evolve to reach this goal. Mind you, after the rules take effect come 17th July (next month), I find after extensive playing that the game really has become over-simplified (or 'dumbed down' - which I doubt), I would be willing to abandon the ship, give my collection away and take up another extreme hobby like gator wrestling or the like.

If you wish to submit opinions (whether positive or negative), I suggest you drop by the Magic: The Gathering Facebook fan page and make yourself heard. I advise against sending sending hatemail off to Aaron Forsythe or other WoTC staff - I'm certain they did not make the decision lightly.

ALSO - there now appears to be several polls out there regarding the new rules changes with the release of Magic 2010 . . . this is me jumping on the bandwagon. Very simplified, and only looking at three of the bigger changes - give a 'Pump It' or 'Dump It'.

I'm sure we will hear a lot more on this and I hope to provide the Magic 2010 FAQ summary as soon as I can get my claws on it.

M10 Spoiler 3

~
Wow - so much news / spoilers, I think I may slide into overload today. Perhaps I will start with the easy stuff first - Magic 2010 spoilers !

Acidic Slime, 3GG
Creature - Ooze, Uncommon
Deathtouch
When Acidic Slime enter the battlefield, destroy target artifact, enchantment, or land.
2/2

Not that bad - not that good either - a bit overcosted but I still love the destruction this brings to the table.

Ball Lightning, RRR
Creature - Elemental, Rare
Trample, haste
At the beginning of the end step, sacrifice Ball Lightning.
6/1

I realise core sets are a return to basics but I still twitch when I read the rules help text on this card. Not a bad creature really and a decent price. I would be looking for recursion on this one.

Clone (reprint), 3U
Creature - Shapeshifter, Rare
You may have Clone enter the battlefield as a copy of any creature on the battlefield.
0/0

Decent card, just plan your play appropriately - start working your strategies out now. Same art as the previous 10th Edition print which is OK.

Child of Night, 1B
Creature - Vampire, Common
Lifelink
2/1

A very simple vampire with lifelink - I know it is a common but still wish I could have this critter have flying as well. Art is dark, flavour text makes me giggle.

Undead Slayer, 2W
Creature - Human Cleric, Uncommon
W{T} : Exile target Skeleton, Vampire or Zombie
2/2

This my friends is a decent card - if you find yourself up against those black creatures - you may want this in your sideboard as this is as useful to you as an extra toe against a red burn deck.

Glacial Fortress
Land - Rare
Glacial Fortress enters the battlefield tapped unless you control a Plains or an Island.
{T} : Add {W} or {U} to your mana pool.

I was really hoping for a non-basic land which I could drop on turn one but perhaps I am a bit too greedy - this is just fine as well (except for the rarity part).

Likewise to Glacial Fortress, we can expect similar dual lands in M10 such as these - - -

Murky Tidewater
Land - Rare
Murky Tidewater enters the battlefield tapped unless you control a Island or Swamp.
{T}: Add {U} or {B} to your mana pool.

Floral Clearing
Land - Rare
Floral Clearing enters the battlefield tapped unless you control a Forest or Plains.
{T}: Add {G} or {W} to your mana pool.

Desolate Cairns
Land - Rare
Desolate Cairns enters the battlefield tapped unless you control a Swamp or a Mountain.
{T}: Add {B} or {R} to your mana pool.

Ashwood Forest
Land - Rare
Ashwood Forest enters the battlefield tapped unless you control a Mountain or a Forest.
{T}: Add {R} or {G} to your mana pool.

Huge rule changes on the horizon Magic Players - it will rock your world come 17th July so put on your thinking caps. These rules changes go into effect on July 11, 2009 (the first day of Magic 2010 Prerelease events) and are scheduled to take effect on Magic Online on July 29.

On the whole, I think (as a casual player) that these are good changes. Perhaps since I have as much neuronic activity in my upper cortext as a bag of rocks, I think that this makes the game a bit more simple.

Here is a brief summary of the changes - for all the gory details, read the column today.

1. Small change to the order of when players are to mulligan.

2. Terminology changes: “in play” is now “the battlefield”, “play” is now “cast”, “removed from the game” is now “in exile”. The very wordy “at the end of turn” is now “at the beginning of the end step”, which is still stoopid sounding.

3. No more mana burn - land really should not hurt you. Mana pools are now drained at each step.

4. Tokens now have ownership by the first player to control them, not the player who cast the spell that brought them into play.

5. Damage no longer uses the stack and combat is changed (check the additional notes below). Most significantly, while declaring blockers, the attacker assigns the ordering of the blockers on his or her creatures. After assigning the order, players can cast spells. THEN damage is dealt, and the attacker must assign at least lethal damage to each blocker, in order, before moving on to the next one. Damage is resolved immediately. This is like automatic trample to each successive creature.

6. Deathtouch and lifelink are now static abilities / state effects.

Additional notes on Combat Damage . . .

Combat Damage No Longer Uses the Stack (!)

As soon as damage is assigned in the combat damage step, it is dealt. There is no time to cast spells and activate abilities in between; the last time to do so prior to damage being dealt is during the declare blockers step.

Combat Phase
* Beginning of combat step
* Declare attackers step
* Declare blockers step
* Combat damage step
* End of combat step

* If a creature has the ability to block multiple attackers, and does so, it uses the same order-and-assign system for dividing its damage among those attackers. In this case, the defending player orders the attacking creatures.
* If multiple creatures are blocking an attacker and one of them leaves combat, the relative order of the other creatures doesn't change.
* If one or more creatures is blocking an attacker and a new creature enters the battlefield blocking that attacker (I'm thinking of Flash Foliage), the attacking player inserts the new creature into the existing order wherever he or she wants. It can be first, last, or somewhere in between. The relative order of the other creatures doesn't change.

Did that just bake your noodle ? - I'm gonna need some more time to digest this.

M10 Spoiler 2

~
Two more Facebook art spoilers for the upcoming Core Set edition of Magic 2010 ('M10') . . .

This one can only be the beautiful / stunning art for Serra Angel by Greg Staples (link HERE) . . .

EDIT : the art does NOT belong to Serra ! - Please disregard - nothing to see here . . . move along. :-)

Serra Angel, 3WW
Creature - Angel, Uncommon
Flying, vigilance
4 / 4

Very interesting as it appears that Serra Angel, previously a Rare card now is to be reprinted as an Uncommon.

~

This one sure the heck looks like . . .
Grinning Demon - this one by artist Wayne Reynolds.

Grinning Demon, 2BB
Creature - Demon, Rare
At the beginning of your upkeep, you lose 2 life.
Morph 2BB (You may play this face down as a 2/2 creature for 3. Turn it face up any time for its morph cost.)
6 / 6

Not sure what to make of the 'Morph' mechanic as it is highly unlikely to have this mechanic reprint into a core set edition so perhaps the art really does belong to another new creature . . . ???

~

And now for a bit of old-fashioned speculation . . .

On Monday, Mark Rosewater answered a few questions regarding what to expect in the next expansion, Zendikar in the article Tweet Talk.

The question (from 7sigma) : It was said that Zendikar's theme will be something new. Can you give us a hint? Pirates and dinosaurs are leading the rumors.

Maro 254 : "First, a Hint: Here’s my hint. There is a space in Magic design that we’ve explored on individual cards but have never explored thematically as a block theme. We started with that theme and then crafted a world that made it make sense. Once we had the world, we then made a bunch of other mechanics that made sense in that world. The design and creative did a lot of back and forth work to integrate the mechanical themes into the world. I do feel the world we’ve create is a resonant one, but not one with pirates or dinosaurs. Or robots. Or ninjas. Or monkeys. Let me wrap this answer up by saying that I’m quite excited with how Zendikar turned out, and once I’m allowed to freely talk about it, I anticipate I’ll start getting letters to ask me to stop talking about it."

A design space on individual cards but never a block theme ? hmmm.

How about a return to 'Flip Cards' ? ?

About a dozen or so had been printed . .

M10 Booster Packs

~
Magic 2010 is coming. And does it have handsome boosters ?

You can bet your Culo there are !

Lets check 'em out in all their blister pack foil goodness . . .

~

This card feels like a white enchantment - possibly a token generator - great art !
If I wasn't such an introvert, I'd ask her out on a date.

~
Blue creature - rather obviously a Sphinx.
There has been about 13 sphinxes so far in the history of Magic with the lion's share (7) belonging to the last block (Shards of Alara).
This one, unlike the the sphinxes in Alara does not appear to be an artifact critter.
~
A Demon - nasty black critter - great teeth however - nice smile.
If they wanted the card art to look menacing, they failed - this guy looks like a buddy I used to party with in college.
~
Red enchantment - the art here shows serious case of 'roid rage.
That or perhaps someone just ate his last Häagen-Dazs® bar.
This has been CONFIRMED to be an Enrage reprint.
~
Green critter . . . with a stick (!)
Kinda funny that said stick looks like Behemoth Sledge (?).
Our money is on a Troll Ascetic reprint.
~
Anywhoos - stay tuned for additional installments of Magic 2010 spoilers accompanied by my witty drivel.

M10 Intro Packs

White : We Are Legion
Foil Rare : Lightwielder Paladin, 3WW

Blue : Presence of Mind
Foil Rare : Djinn of Wishes, 3UU

Disenchanted

~
Fellow Magic player and blogger WinterN over at the Spanish site Prismagic has a very interesting project . . . He is working on collecting a 'Global' Set of the popular white spell Disenchant. If you can help them out, drop by the site.

What is a Global Set?
A Global Set is a collection of a specific card in all / every printed version that exists, including all the collections in which there appeared, in all languages, foil and non foil, and promotional publications of any kind. With the case of disenchant the number of cards to complete the collection is 153 of which WinterN and his other friends have collect 88 at the time of this post.

While I'm yattering on about Disenchant, here is an interesting article from MaRo regarding this card from 2003 . . .

Small Change, Mark Rosewater, Monday, July 21, 2003

Don’t let the title of this column fool you. This is no “small change”. Our examination into the colors forced a number of bigger changes. Once such change stemmed from the fact that we realized that the king of artifact hate needed to be green.

Why? Because when we examined the green/blue conflict, nature versus artifice, it became obvious that part of green's identity is its hatred of things unnatural. And in Magic, that’s artifacts. This hatred of artifacts is built into the core of green’s definition.
At the time we realized this, green was number three at artifact destruction. (Red being first and white being second.) So green got moved up two spaces. This meant white was knocked down to third. What third means is that white can have a little bit of artifact destruction but it has to be a pretty low power level. (In addition, it doesn't get any in the basic set.)

No matter how you slice it, Disenchant is of a pretty high power level. In fact, some of R&D argued that white was the true number one artifact destruction color solely because of Disenchant. Thus, Disenchant had to go.
But R&D really liked Disenchant. We felt it served a very important function in the game keeping dangerous combo pieces in check. So, we decided to move it. As green was number two at enchantment removal (white’s first), it seemed the obvious choice.

For those fans of white out there, have no fear. For each area it loses something, it gains it elsewhere. The metamorphosis of white has taken a little longer than the other colors, but I promise, when are shifting is done, white will be equal to the other colors.

Naya Aggro Math

~
Something I hope to try next Friday Night Magic -

I just overhauled a deck I had recently discussed in the last 'What I'm Playing'. Why ? Some of the most aggressive decks in standard today have something rather similar in common - a healthy smattering of Naya cards (red / green / white). I wanted to try and construct / pilot a deck that would incorporate the best synergies of the big 'roid Naya beaters to deliver a severe kick to the face on almost every turn.

To this end, I turned to Knight of New Alara, and Colossal Might which couples rather nicely with most every tri-coloured Naya creature. To keep the pain sustained and maximize the synergies in play, Gloryscale Viashino got drafted as well onto the team.

Beaters . . .
Meglonoth (6/6)

Gloryscale Viashino (3/3)
Woolly Thoctar (5/4)
Jund Hackblade (2/1 -> 3/2 haste)

With
Knight of New Alara in play . . .

Bigger Beaters . . .
Meglonoth (9/9)
Woolly Thoctar (8/7)
Gloryscale Viashino (6/6)
Jund Hackblade (6/5)

With
Colossal Might (+4/+2 and trample)

Stupid Huge Beaters . . .
Meglonoth (13/11)
Gloryscale Viashino (13/11)
Woolly Thoctar (12/9)
Jund Hackblade (9/7)

Gloryscale Viashino (3/3) while Knight of New Alara is in play is an enviable 6/6. When you play the multicolour spell Colossal Might, Gloryscale gets pumped by +3/+3 making it now a frightening 9/9. Your evil mind knows that this is the time to target Gloryscale with Colossal Might which now makes it an insane 13/11 with trample . . . just crazy!

I am also rather pleased that Bloodbraid Elf cascades more than half the spells currently within the deck. As it sits currently, Bloodbraid could hit (in order of preference) Woolly Thoctar, Jund Hackblade, Colossal Might, Stun Sniper, and some other critters which I will not let you in on (in case someone from the club is reading).

My suggestions for FNM dinner - invite a couple of large beaters, and let them party with Knight of New Alara and Colossal Might. I hope to report back to you with details as to how this Naya build performed against the various other decks.

M10 Spoiler 1

~
Looks like yet two more Magic 2010 core set arts have been placed on that MTG Facebook Fan Page - Thanks Wizards !

One image had been confirmed as the black staple 'Drudge Skeletons' and I have to say that the art from Daarken is nothing short of amazing.

Drudge Skeletons, 1B
Creature - Skeleton, Common
{B}: Regenerate Drudge Skeletons. (The next time this creature would be destroyed this turn, it isn't. Instead tap it, remove all damage from it, and remove it from combat.)
1/1

Apparently, there was a second image which Daarken has posted to his webpage - You be the judge as to which image is better.

Another image posted to the MTG Facebook page is this art featuring a hungry Hydra creature with humans running around rather alarmed. My apologies to the artist, but I have to say that this does not really quite float my boat. In Magic, I love to play cards that have WIN not only written on the card text but also created within the art space.

~

Just a quick look back as to what had been spoiled so far for those who had not been afforded the opportunity to follow closely . . .

Drudge Skeletons, Nightmare, Shivan Dragon, Golden Lotus, Queen of Ants, Vampire Nocturnus, Enrage, Unsummon, Liliana Vess, Serra Angel, Silence, Jace Beleren, Wall of Frost, Black Knight, Capricious Efreet, Chandra Nalaar, Enrage, Birds of Paradise, Garruk Wildspeaker.

This week on the Wizards site ('Origins Week'?) had quite a retro feel to it. To this end, I now provide for images from WoTC's shady and obscure past.

Your challenge - leave a post comment describing where these images are from and what the product is - bonus points for purpose.

And the final clue . . . . ----->>

Thanks - stay tuned for more Zendikar and M10 spoilers.

Zendikar Planeswalker

~
You may have recalled last November when we first introduced to a mysterious Elf Planeswalker who we learned was Nissa Revane. In today's article, A Different Kind of Origin Story, Doug Beyer lifts the lid off the pot so we can smell what's cooking. We already know that Nissa will make an appearence in the new Duels of the Planeswalkers game what is news however that she is also expected in the upcoming Zendikar expansion due out in October, 2009.

Here is what Doug had to say today . . .

~
Introducing Nissa

This is Nissa Revane, a proud and ruthless nature-mage. She seeks to prove that her people, the elves, are the true heirs and best stewards of the planes of the Multiverse. She hails from a world known as Zendikar—and you'll see her card by October of this year.

If you want an early glimpse of Nissa's character in action, check out Duels of the Planeswalkers for XBOX and PC: Nissa is a combatant that you'll face as you play through the game. A word of warning: Nissa prefers action to words. She's a master summoner, and she knows the blades and arrows of her elf warriors speak louder than any rhetoric.

Note for the curious: Nissa's art, by Jaime Jones, was slightly altered for the purposes of Duels' packaging and marketing, because the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) rejected the original art for use on packaging. They felt her outfit was a bit too revealing. We felt it was in-bounds for fantasy art on a "T for Teen" product, but we're not the ESRB, and that's the way it goes sometimes. So we had Jaime Jones tweak the piece to meet those standards for Duels. Nissa's original art will remain wherever her card appears—on her card in the Duels game, in Magic Online, and of course in booster packs of Zendikar.

Let's speculate about the abilities briefly again - - Firstly - I'm thinking that there will be TWO positive (+) abilities and one negative (-) ability.

Mana Cost : 2GB
Loyalty 4
+1 : Put a 1/1 black and green elf warrior creature token into play.
+1 : Target creature gets +2/+2 and flying until end of turn.
-8 : Destroy four target permanents

Grand Prix Seattle

~
Magic: the Gathering held this weekend's Grand Prix in it's own backyard at GP Seattle/Tacoma. Yann Massicard from Tours, France was crowed champion and took home $3,500. Ben Lundquist from Gloversville, NY, Paulo Vitor Damo da Rosa from Porto Alegre, Brazil and Charles Gendron Dupont from Seattle, WA rounded out the top four, each taking home their own cash prize. The top 16 GP Seattle finalists earned invitations to compete at Pro Tour Honolulu, June 5-7.

Yann Massicard, GP Seatlle Tacoma winner was on 'fire' (thanks Chandra) this weekend.
(Thanks to JS and Porter Novelli for the image !)

~
It was somewhat ironic that this tournament was not only hosted by Cascade Games, it was the mechanic of choice for many of the over 1,100 participants. Although players were throwing down Bitominous Blast, Bloodbraid Elf, or Captured Sunlight, at the end of day two, the 'battlefield' belonged to Yann Massicard who piloted a Doran build.

Here is a potential mitt-full I just pulled from Yann's deck with the 'Sample Hand Generator' . . . total win in my humble opinion.

~
Competing for a coveted seat at top 8 was not the only experience to have at the Grand Prix. With loads of side-events, gunslinging, and meeting MTG artists, one's day would be rather busy. Our good friends and fellow bloggers Reinhart and Leaf of Gathering Magic had an opportunity to interview Mike Turian, pro-player and WoTC developer. Check out their interview and event wrap-up HERE. They were kind enough to provide some pics too - ->

Here is the skinny for the top 8 . . .
